Not the stuff that stops ya tyres working. good old wirlesses! well new wirelesses. i'm not about to get one soon but i'm intreagued for when I do have the dosh to splash. Now an half decent CD radios (so 90's I know) can be got at for less than £100, set of speakers easily less than £100, and for the hard of hearing a an amp is pretty cheap too. what more do you need! Whats the cheapest half decent stereo with a a phones jack input, or USB for MP3? And apart from an ear shattering heart pumping system or an all in one Sat nav thingy, why spend a fortune?! Specially when the car becomes a target for crims and looters. thoughts and ideas on the subject? I'd love a nice crisp system for the car without going mad for weight, after all its teh best place to practice ya singing!

I've given up with it unless you have it installed and hidden in the glove box the b'stards will break into have it away for their next fix.
Removable faceplates aren't any good either as the common (probably spotted) Scroat (from glue sniffing obv) will assume you have done what every other berk has been doing for years and put the face off in the glove box or under the seat
Sore subject with me........ Last one pinched
- did £360 worth of damage to get in (including giving up screwing the locks after he'd wrecked 2 without getting in and ran out doors) so broke the rear 3/4 panel window (which was bonded)
- screw drivered out the stereo and wrecked the dash!!!!
- Got the stereo and then ransacked the car looking for the faceplate - which was in my coat pocket with me!!!
It really boils my weeeee

I accidentally started singing along to my iPod on the bus the other day, luckilyonly 4 or 5 other people on board got treated to my "pub singer" singalongamission veriosn of Tower of Strength about 7:40 am before I quickly realised what I was doing...
I've had some cracking good stuff in my cars in the past. Directed, Rockford Fosgate, Phoenix Gold Z series, Kicker, Xtant... Mmmm.... Those Xtants were the old school ones from before they were bought out by MTX. Proper hand made kit.
I like music and Ilike to have it reproduced properly. My old Morris Minor rag top had a pair of IB 8" subs in the back and people looked round to see where the music was coming from, wheres the Saxo? LOL Can't be comig from that old Granny's car...
That said none of my current cars has any ICE in it other than what the factory fitted and in most cases that doesn't work.
You need quality not quantity. No need to build something that looks like Sony's new dealer demo car. A pair of components up front, a sub in the back and a decent enough amp to drive it all. Job done.
As my various cars get sorted I will probably install in them. Nothing silly. Just enough to give good music. Also I hate to see people cut up an original interior to fit speakers and I like to keep it hidden so as not to attract the thieves.
The thing I find is most advice you will get is all about how to make boom-boom-boom which the chavs like for their bleedin awful dance music. Getting a system set up to play a variety of musical styles well is harder.
Also you have to consider what the car is. A stripped out light weight car with lots of rattles and a straight through exhaust - well, are you going to be able to hear anything anyway... But if a crusier/commuter, its nice to have tunes.

my thoughts too BC. I have £80 one i bought and slung in the sapph, oh the novelty of CD's on the move! always removed the front and always left glove box open and visable. got bored no tunes for short trips so put a mongdeo tape player back in! I'm in two minds whether to fit the cd in the MR2 for the summer, but being sporty it will be more of a target, and plans are to put the mongdeo system in the completed 3 door, don't want that attcked! So yeah i have teh fear! suppose eventually the old 'MAX' lot and Audiophile modmods lot get broken into! defo no point in lary system unles it can be removed and taken with ya...

Most head units will play MP3s now, but why not just get a TRIP or similar for your IPOD/MP3 Player and your sorted.
That way there is no need to splodge as much wad on the head unit.
My GT has a Panasonic KDCFX unit, all singing and dancing thing, that has a colour animated display but....... I never use it I perfer the engine tone LOL.

I bought a JVC CD head unit last year for £90. Plays MP3 and WMA (important for me) discs and has an aux input as well. Spoilt for choice!
Then I bought some huge speakers already in boxes from Ebuyer for £30. A pair of old household stereo speakers in the front, the big ones in the boot - BINGO! Big noise and cheap as chips!
But after all that, we rarely listen to the stereo on the move as it has to be seriously loud to be heard above the wind/engine/road noise and it just hurts! Great for camps though.

small amp - ipod wired directly to it, £10 for the amp, a few quid for cables and a few hours fitting.
out of sight, as many tunes as your ipod can carry, nothing to steal

I used to have a big ol' Sony / Rockford Fosgate / JBL set-up but got bored of being security paranoid and not being able to chuck stuff in the boot. ;D So I have a 1980s Pioneer head unit and an ipod adaptor. If you want more though, like AK says - components up front, sub out back. Does the job! Remember: good quality, well-placed front speakers are a must!

I have a couple of decent head units kicking about so I'll probably use them for now but in future I'll probably be taking this route

I'm not into spending big money on ICE. If it plays my CDs and goes loud, I'm happy ;D That said, I'm well and truly in the digital era these days with MP3s and all that. So... how do you connect your MP3 player up to an amp? Is it cheap? Would be a worthwhile upgrade I reckon

I have £xxxs of stereo gear knocking about, CD head unit, multi changer, amps, speakes and subs that i took out of my old golf when i sold it. I' m just to lazy to fit any of it. I find 350 cubic inches of detroits finest usually does for me.

you get what you pay for with a stereo in a car, if you want good sound you have to build a decent system, same as indoors, the difference between an ok sound and a good sound is amazing when you hear it.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

not skimping on wires and speakers is important.
What i'll end up with is something as good as my system at home, which is a nice retro technics seperates. quality sound, quality kit, hardly cost owt.

For wires us copper electrical cable,.. cheap and carries as much signal as the expensive jobbies. We used them at the Professional audio company I used to work for (we built digital mixing desks for the emdia and post production industry), saves money and does the job.
As for ICE... my ICE is an LW radio and Radio4 in the Datsun .. I love it.

YES! OF COURSE IT MATTERS!!!!!!!!!!!111!!
seriously, a well set up system can make you squeal in pleasure lol
current fav, i've put in a 4x45w goodmans HU and replaced the door cards, as the lower spec favorits 'only' had 40w round components, which i replaced with some 110w ones. and hidden behind stock grilles. much better than 6x9s!
ps, 6x9 should all have holes drilled through them, they distort the soundwaves on the way out and are a useless alternative to proper circular components.
For a really powerful, yet discreet system you may want to hide an 8" sub where you can, or look into a free-air sub so that no box is required. get an amp that is matched in power to the sub and preferably same brand, not essential but wattages vary across brands. add to that a good set of component speakers, anything over 70ishW is enough and you can get a HU to feed the component speakers, or get another amp to drive them. if you like undistorted music, DO NOT use the same amp for the comps and sub. not only does it suck power and strain the cables, it will have difficulty in sending the right frequencies to the separate speakers. you could end up with your components trying to play frequencies at 20Hz lol. (not good) low pass/ hi pass filters in amps don't work well enough.
failing any of that, get one of those connectors for yer ipod that plugs into the cassette deck on a standard player. thats how my friend tom gets music in his estelle. i went the other route and put over 2600W of musical generation equipment into mine and as yet I'm the only person to have sat in it while dishing out a full track of ~40Hz bass lolololol
