Hi Folks Just a quick one..... me sick and tired of ye olde datsun wheel trims, so was wondering, can you just rub down and paint a steelie with the tyre and balancing weight still on? I'm not fussed about a perfect finish by any means (especially as they will show the car up! ) but i'm mainly worried about the balancing weight. Also is there any type of paint thats reccomended? I've had a look and i reakon hammerite will probarly be a good idea, but their spray cans are quite dear. Can i just prime and spray with car body paint or is that not tough enough? I know I would be best off waiting until tyres are off, but I don't have a spare set for my micra. Any help muchos appreciated! added porn for interest: the wheels i have are similar to these, all nice and rusty under nissan trims

I tarted up the steels on my old renault 5 without taking the tyres off gave them a serious rub down, fisrt with a wire brush then with paper etc, sprayed them just with silver i had around, then covered the excess with tyre paint, made the tyres look a bit too shiny for the rest of the car tho. You can just mask off the tyre, and as long as you are careful cleaning the wheel around the balancing weight, it should be fine.

You can just paint the wheel with tyre and weights. Just mask off the tyre with tape and spray-a-way!
Obviously the finnish will be a bit dodgy, but it wont look too bad. I helped my mate do it on a set of 13" pepperpots, gold centres with silver lip (It was just bad still we were 17 and stupid). We just used regular spray paint cans and just put loads of laquer on!
Also sprayed my Metro Turbo alloys white, well i thought it looked good (no pics sorry!)

i did a couple of sets recently, rather than masking the tyres off i 'painted' the sidewall with liquid soap then washed it off later, much quicker than masking off.

Tis worth primering. I cheated and bought my alloys blasted and primered. All I did then was spray them. Used hammerite matt black, with no laquer and they have survived the winter so far, will get them done properly when I get some cash though, powder coated. Also did the steelies on the back there with the tyre on them, just washed them with water, wire brush, white spirit clean and wipe dry - and that stayed on fine. Same paint.

If you're really lazy you can just spray the rims then wipe the overspray off the tyre with some thinners on a rag

if your doin a 2 colour job make sure you do the light colours first, then mask em and do the darks, i did the reverse and when sprayed the laquer coat on all the dark overspray showed up under the silver doh!!!

ooh! thanks for the advice folks! If i decide not to put the trims back on I will do them "properly" ;D been tinkerin, nipped down me local retrofactor and picked up a couple of cheapo cans of gloss black for 6 squids. (apologies for large pics ) : Before (well nearly, I got a bit giddy) this is the spare, the ones on the car are even worse after- i did it using the surprising skoda method- can always put the trims back on! quick clean, quick wire brush, quick rub with some emery, masked the tyres and the spare slaved on the car (to hold that corner up whilst I took the nearside front off- need more axle stands!) not too bad from a distance are they! with my half assed prepping method (I really didnt do much ) i'll give it three days driving before the paint falls off. The others are drying in the garage at the mo, probarly best i leave em over night and try em on tomoz. Any comments? Insults welcome ;D

Nice work guys, for some reason i've never considered doing this to my rusty old steelies. Should mean I can stop searching in vain for decent looking wheel trims (I hate the common as muck Halfords ones).

looks much better when i did mine i used some thin card as a guide to stop over spray and did 1/3rd of the wheel at a time. To finish of i used some clear lacquer. I've got some brand new k11 steelies that I've been tring to give away for ages if you want a blank unrusty canvas ;D

wqahayyyy... well done dan matey, somethings not right though.. to me your wheels appear square, white with a red cross on them??? think its just my computer though. love the idea of doing them black though- no masking involved, ace . when i did those slots i bought a tin of wheel paint, dunno what the difference is, but it was cheaper than normal paint and the right colour, then just laquered over them. remember...... plastic wheel trims are for ladys and the elderly- don't put em back on!! ;D

My Audi came with rusty steels and trim rings and centres that were so black that I didn't know they were chrome An afternoon with a wire brush on an angle grinder, some gloss black and Autosol had them looking sweet again...

Good job on the audi! amazing what a bit of elbow grease can do carl- i could see the pics at home but cant at work, so maybe theres a problem with the pics somewhere, may not be your computer! I did mask off the tyres too. Mat> I love your wheels matey, go really well with the straight clean bodywork! infact your whole k10 is the reason why i started playing with my micra- it was supposed to be a daily beater! What lowering springs do you have mate? The K11 rims- are they the drilled hole type ones, look very loosely like weller motorsports? May be interested, but I really like the retro style of the K10 steels- i'll have to decide! Will get up pics when all 4 are on the car thanks again all for the help

I've got spax -35mm springs which totally transformed the car. The wheel are the drilled hole type , then really need to be Slatered to make them look like wellers ;D
