I need to get rid of 2 engines (4 pot) and a gearbox before the cash ban kicks in on 3rd December (don't worry it's all legit!). Any idea roughly what it's all worth and can anybody recommended a friendly dealer in the N.Kent/S.E.London area that doesn't own a collection of Rottweilers ;D

You need to be crafty with what you weigh it in as. Our local yard is paying £170/ton for 'shearing' or heavy, which is engines etc. not to be confused with 'light' that most car panels are classed as. If the gearboxes are 'irony alloy' i.e. ally casing, then it's £280/ton. That's Birmingham pricing and will be more London area I would have thought. The 'cash ban' just means you need id and get payment by cheque, nothing more sinister.

Keep an engine block, it's a perfectly flat surface if you ever need a perfectly flat surface to work on.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys but I need to get rid of them this weekend as I need the floor space. They are old VW Polo engines and a Polo gearbox. Any recommended dealers would be great ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

I weighed in a Polo (6n2) box a couple of months back and got £15, that was an autobox so I'm guessing slightly heavier than manual

I heard about this 'cash ban' the other day - I reckon what'll happen is people will weigh in 'on account' and then at a certain time of year they'll get one big payout - one of my cycling mates does this, takes a trailer of scrap each month, gets 'paid' a ticket, and then cashes all his tickets in at christmas
not much help if you're trying to weigh in your donor car to cover the cost of purchase mind you...

Almost on the road: b11 sunny breadvan, e36 tds, 325i skidcar,
nearly there: ford f250 tathauler, suzuki alto, u11 bluey
not for a while: ford pop, 32 rails,
not in this lifetime: ruby, '29 hillman
''unfortanatly I'm quite old and scruffy and in need of some loving. my drive shaft needs a new boot....''

It's cheque on the day according to our local yards

arnt cheques being shut off soon tho :S Not for at least another three years according to my bank-as there isn't a viable alternative for loads of small businesses & self employed people. I receive around 50 cheques per month during the summer, some could find other ways of payment, but certainly not all at the moment.

^ The UK payments council had planned to phase them out and close the clearing system by 2018, but has since withdrawn those plans, so cheques will continue for the forseeable.

If they phased out cheques, how are they going to manage to screw people over when they migrate ISA's?

Yep, they have to be able to give details of customers to the relevant authorities.
Its impacted on us at work now, we can't get 'cash' for the Ali/brass/copper etc we sort out. Its all got to go through the account now like the steel currently does.
