sorry if this has been put on before but its important that this dosent happen!!! petitions.pm.gov.uk/traveltax/The government's proposal to introduce road pricing will mean you having to purchase tracking device for your car and paying a monthly bill to use it. The tracking device will cost about £200 and in a recent study by the BBC, the lowest monthly bill was £28 for a rural florist and £194 for a delivery driver. A non working Mum who used the car to take the kids to school paid £86 in one month. On top of this massive increase in tax, you will be tracked. Somebody will know where you are at all times. They will also know how fast you have been going, so even if you accidentally creep over a speed limit in time you can probably expect a Notice of Intended Prosecution with your monthly bill. If you care about our freedom and stopping the constant bashing of the car driver, please sign the petition on No 10's new website (link below) and pass this on to as many people as possible.

I've put my name to that one already, think it was in somebody's forum sig.
There was something about it on the news yesterday, apparently it's the most-signed petition on there....the 2nd place one is calling for the repeal of the anti-Hunt bill with about 20,000 signatures, the stop the traveltax one's running at about 1/4 million signatures.

I can't see this one actually happening. I know most of the UK population likes to be trodden on by the government without complaint, but I think this one may wake everyone up.
Can you really imagine people volunteering to pay the government to have one of its spying devices in their car, then paying further amounts to the government when it sends them a bill telling them where they've been over the previous month?
I'm not sure about any of you, but there won't be anything like that on any of my cars. If it turns out that they are to be fitted by someone else to MY car then the first thing that will be happening will be that it comes straight off and gets beaten flat with my lump hammer.
Also, third party signal-jammers spring to mind. It won't take too much to make this nonsense unworkable.

Mike the hammer idea was trademark registered by me when i first read norwich union trialling/researching this idea, 2 years ago! the other one is a brilliant idea, and one that must be worked into devices such as stereos and mobiles and stuff so that it is totally legal to block the signal

Thanks for bringing it back to our attention. It really does spell bad news IMO bad for our competition in the world due to cost of running a business, and an end to our freedom as we know it, looking for cameras is one thing but being tracked and recorded all the time sucks, we wont take this lying down. I'll march or block the roads etc if I have to, or/and disappear abroad!
It lived in my signature for a while, had a break from it.

335000 signatures now!! Crikey. When you think how many population there is who use the Internet regularly and how many will have heard of the petition, that really puts into perspective how universally-hated this idea is.

I'm more interested in the petition on there to get Tony Blair to stand on his head and juggle ice cream. Anyone signed that one?

I did hear a long time ago that Singapore had a road pricing car tracking scheme. Every month, every motorist got an itemised bill for all their travel, listing every road with a date and time.
It didn't even last six months. All the politician's wives started opening the mail, and realising that a lot of their husband's business meetings were being held in tourist resorts and red-light districts ;D

You have to remember that the BBC study was carried out based on "estimates" and "our best information we have got from government statements and leaks"
I took part in the study, I would actually save money even based on the fact I used my 1965 Oldsmobile as my daily drivcer at the time which is already tax free and does 13-14 MPG. I commute 5 miles each way at peak hours. I notice they don't quote my figures...
What does bug me is that Nottingham is still active trying to impose a £5 per day "congestion charge" for people who work in the city. People who shop or socialise in the city will not be charged. Nice.

Apparently the local news said that Sheffield City Council have decided to go for congestion charging this morning. I can't find any mention of it anywhere at the moment though.
