One of these is, bar the final excuses to back out, probably going to be my main 'ride' for the next few years. In the spirit of mods, I already have one planned - get rid of the fakeybentley grille and put an original chipcutter one back on. But... Is it cool, or crass? (I did consider a W211 E-class, but actually... no. I'm sure they're lovely, but it left me cold and was twice the age).

Cool in some respects but a decent E39 (or even a good E34) walks all over them otherwise.

Cool as long as they're not sporting the aforementioned bentley grille ;D They're quite impressive in real life, especially lowered. I haven't had the chance to sit in one yet though. The new one leaves me could though, it's trying to hard.

I like them. Seem to recall that they were popular in the US simply because they were the cheapest car available that you could get 'Dub-Twos' onto. ;-) I'm sure they retail at something like £10k new in the US. Led to me having crazy ideas about a potential import business when they first came out. I figured UK gangsters wouldn't mind sitting on the wrong side if I could give them a couple of £k off list!

Would be cool if there weren't so many around. Bit unfair to call the grille 'Bentleyesque' as Chrysler adopted this design for the original 300C whilst Bentley were fitting RR style grilles to their cars back in the 60's. Now an original 300C ?? ........ that would be ubercool.

That's the proper grille style. Most of the 300s in the UK (all Cs, of course, unless US imported) seem to have had wire-mesh grilles fitted that mimic Bentley ones.
I've driven a 2010 SRT Design CRD, and liked the slightly improved post 2008 interior, but I want a Touring estate for practicality. The new model interior on the Executive model is rather nice.
Tried the E500, and apart from the lashings of leather - I think I prefer the 300C interior. It's cheap but honestly so, like the Voyager, rather than trying hard to be smart but really lacking in strength like the W211's interior was. Plus, it has space down the side of the driver's seat for my cane, which the E-class lacked.

Had one as a rent a car when I went to america, I actually really liked it! Go for it! I had a blue Charger. And before that I had a 300M which I loved (LH platform). Grilles: Unashamedly Chrysler. Fakeybentley. What the... There are others. The horrors are endless.

Don't let the chavved ones put you off.
The V6 sells for like £20K in the USA but you can't compare prices directly that way as a new Ford Focus is like £5K there.
There are a lot of myths going round about these - pub talk - ignore and research properly.
There is Mercedes DNA in them but they aren't an E class. Nor are they an S class as some say. The LX platform as it is called has a number of vehicles built on it (Charger, Magnum, 300, Challenger and possibly some others).
I've driven them (only in the USA) and been in them over here. I like them. The interior is no worse than a Mondeo or any other mid spec car.
The only problem areas I have found proper proof of (non-pub talk) is that they have a healthy appetite for front ball joints. High mileage ones show wear to the drivers' seat bolster.
There is a problem on the TDI which can occur which is something to do with the turbo oil feed, I need to read up on this as the only people I have seen discussing this were the "so I took it back to the main dealer and got a £3000 bill" types so I'm not sure if there is a good DIY preventative maintenance thing or even if its just some idiots having idiot problems.
They are also quite hard on bushes, so buy quality ones not the cheap nasty Mexican ones.
Of course they are all automatics, who would want a manual one?
I've done some real long runs in them and they are proper comfy.
My tame garage recommends them, in CRD version only, and they normally bawl me out if I suggest buying anything even remotely iffy.
I'm still on the "research" phase as I also was thinking 300C, E class, S class, 7 series, Lexus, Jag...

I need footwell space - right foot in a cast or just unwilling to play - so the Jaguars were out. Just not interested in BMWs... S-class were very leggy in my budget. E-class - comments made above; I found a 30K mile one, travelled 300 miles to see it, it was tired, ratty... the panoramic roof is pretty but the interior (with super-expensive dynamic seats) felt cheap and baggy. And the airmatic suspension makes a worn balljoint sound like a dream.
The 300Cs I've looked at have been between 15-30,000 mile, and the CRD I drove had 20" alloys - felt nice, actually, better than I expected. I've gone with one with just 15,000 miles and 679 hours engine time (forgot to check idle) that looked pretty clean, albeit some faded trim parts. I'll need to put tyres on it, but went with 18" rims as I liked the ride quality over some seriously bad roads.
No V6 petrols here. Not fond of them, much as I liked the 300M it hard to be worked hard.
It felt an awful lot like a W124 in weight of steering etc. and I rather liked it overall, aside from the darkness of the rear with the tinted seats.
