Long time no post! It’s a good one though. At least I think so 😂 I found another vw santana! This one is a bit special. Possibly the lowest mileage B2 vw in the country? 1 owner from new VW Santana GX5 in Lhasa green. Just over 38k on the clock and has been parked in a garage since 1992 without moving! What do you think?

What a find ..have you had it running yet ? looks like she cleans up very well ..great find mate I’ve not yet tried to start it. I believe it’s the original cam belt 😅 To be honest this one will probably get pushed in to the corner of the unit whilst I carry on with the dirty red one. Yesterday I took collection of a fully rebuilt 54k mile engine to drop in it and I’ll hopefully have that all plumbed in ready for the end of the summer. I’ve also managed to get a super rare retro bodykit for that one too. I’ll grab pics of it when I can. Busy juggling projects and stuff slows progress down! I’ve been buying parts for the Mk1 golf at the same time as the B2s as and when desirable bits pop up I don’t think I’ll lower this GX5. I think I’ll get it mechanically sorted and as nice to look at as I can and I’ll use it as it is… Or mayby I’ll slam it? Suspension is easily swapped back 😅😂

Early big saloon VWs are so cool and so rare these days! Real shame there aren’t more of them around! If I had the space I’d love something like a Santana or a Passat with a modern engine as a daily!
Did you ever learn the fate of your old silver GX5 that you found in the scrapyard?
Lhasa is one of the best VW colours in my opinion, that’s gonna look awesome once you’ve been over it!
Cheers
Alex

My father in law had an almost identical one, he loved driving it and I don't think anything went wrong with it, unfortunately in his usual tight arsed way he fitted the cheapest ditch finders he could get and promptly stuffed it into a ditch.

Cheers Alex Well unfortunately, yes. It ended up in another scrap yard and it is dead forever. The owner was a waster, didn’t sorn it and left it somewhere silly.. again. The poor lad did have a lot of other stuff going on in his life but ultimately, he was the end of that car. It ended up in a scrap yard not too far away so I had as much as I could off it before it disappeared for ever. Annoyingly, all the mint spares I sold with it were all still inside the car but most of them had been damaged or rusted out. A sad end for an awesome car. It deserved so much better. I have a photo of it but can’t work out how to add them at the moment 🤦♂️😅

Santana always a nice oddball. Remember when I was a kid we stranded in Switzerland with a my parents T2a campervan again breaking down (that thing breaking down all the time due to no power (38hp or so) and a fixed high roof resulted in a deep hate against all rear engined VW busses). Having to hang around (=camping) at the backyard of the local Swiss VW dealer while waiting for parts I investigated the showroom where they had 2 brand new (introduction model) Santana's. Being in Switzerland both full option, one with velour interior and one even with leather! a big wow in the early 80's. Thom

Made breaking down well worth it 😂 one of the reasons I love them so much is because they’re such an oddball. Can’t wait to get these two on the road. Speaking of which, the red one has taken another good step forward!

So I finally managed to get the red interior in with help with some mates. I’ve had this interior stashed away for years. It came out of a super rare 1981 b2 Passat GLS5. The only GLS5 I’ve ever seen. Sadly the shell was well passed saving so I took what I could. It’s not a perfect fit as the rear bench in the passats is slightly different to the santana (santana seats are fixed as there is a bulkhead, Passat seats fold down flat) but the material is there to get it swapped over on to the santana bench at some point. Have some pics;

They look better in real life. It needs a deep clean inside but that can wait for now. Next step is to take the engine out and clean the bay ready for the new engine to go in. Same spec DS code 1.8 but this one came out of a famous show car and is quite low mileage. Should go well with a weber carb and a GTi cam. I’ll get some pics of it tomorrow when I’m up the unit and show some more progress hopefully Any input, let me know!

I find it really quite surprising that, as I probably visit the forum at least once a day, (most days much more,) that I keep finding threads I don't remember seeing before !!
Never particularly been into the "VW scene" (Dad was) but I can appreciate nice cars and there are some beautiful cars here,
The Golf is little short of superb and the larger saloons are equally impressive,
Now bookmarked and looking forward to seeing future updates,
Nigel

Biggest bit of progress was the engine coming out of the dirty santana. Really excited to get this car back on the road. Just a couple more bits to collect for this one now. New clutch and some gear box mounts are top of the list before I can drop the new engine in ☺️

Another bit of fun was to tidy up the unit and move some of the cars out so we could get to the mk1 (spot the mk1 in this photo below 😂) Last year, a bunch of Mk2 golf owners got together with Bstar wheels and set up a group buy on some custom 16” Sebring wheels. Bigger versions of the wheels that came on mk2 golf rallyes. So I got in on the action and bought a set and today we test fitted them. Apparently it’s the first mk1 golf to have a set of these wheels mounted. Always nice to be the first to do something when pretty much everything has been done with these cars. A cool present as this year, I’ve owned this car for 20 years 👴🏻🚗💕 Personally I’ve never been a fan of the 15” Sebrings but these 16s, I love them. They’re a quality wheel. I know they’re not everyone’s cup of tea but that’s fine. They’ll make a great set of daily wheels for when the car is back on the road. Easy to clean etc. the front will sit better when there is an engine back in. I’ll buy tyres closer to when the car is ready. So yeah, today was fun. It’s been so long since I’d done anything with the mk1. Felt nice to have a little play with it.
