Can anybody tell me what the deal is with these 'pop up' free windscreen chip repair places I keep seeing in the car parks of out of town retail parks?
The Audi has a small chip & am debating whether to take it to be fixed at one of these places. Is there a catch or are they genuinely 'free'?

IIRC they charge it to your insurer.
If the chip has been there more than a month or so I've been told by a few places it's not worth bothering trying to get it repaired, Gavin's special resin doesn't adhere properly once water and general muck has made it's way in.

Yep, it's charged to your insurance company if you have windscreen cover. The carpark people are often quite happy to, ahem, take cash to fix it if you aren't covered I paid £20 cash last time I did it

I reckon if you pay cash for this its about £20, if the insurance cover it they end up paying about £100, then to cover thier costs stick a fiver on the next 100 policy renewals that come up, the scamming twits.

I repaired my windscreen which had 5 chips in it which would have been there for 10+ years when I got the car with a DIY kit off eBay. 18 months and 20,000 miles later the repairs are still sound and whilst not entirely invisible are much better than they were and passed the MOT fine. £7 well spent I say.

Personally, I reckon if you've got windscreen cover you might as well just leave it til it cracks and get a lovely new windscreen. There's nothing better than driving with a new windscreen.

I called out Autoglass to repair my screen on the Merc while I was at work. The tosser who came to repair the screen told me the chip could not be repaired as it already had been repaired and badly and adviced me to get a new screen as soon as. Work mate asked if his could be repaired while he was here and he was told "to many chips you need a new screen.
While at my local Morrisons one of these mobile guys was about so I asked him if he could repair my screen. He could and did but told me he may still see where it was a little due to dirt that may have got in to the chip. While doing my car I told him what Autoglass told me and his reply was that all Autoglass is interested in is selling you a new screen so they can charge your insurance company and they can past the cost on to you. He also told me that it dose not matter how many chips there is in the screen and the only risk of repairing a repair is that it's never as good as it should have been in the first place and there's more risk of the screen braking during the repair, but rare
The Merc had full history with it including the receipt for the repair on the screen and guess who did it"Autoglass" I contacted Autoglass and told them what the independent guy told me but was only offered excuses
The screen was repaired well and was still in the car a year later when I sold it. I would never trust Autoglass but I would some of these independent guys

Autoglass are well and truly on the UK car insurance gravy train, I would give them the widest berth possible. They are just itching 24/7 to send a massive over-inflated fat invoice to your insurance company, who are of course only too happy to pay it, in much the same way as they are only too happy to raise £500 flogging your details to someone who will then claim against you/them for £5000, THE TW4TS

+1, autoglass are absolute flipping sheisters for this kind of thing.
When my mum needed a windscreen in her Ka, I got a few local quotes of £75, £85 ish. I rang autoglass up and they quoted £460 and were coming hard at me with pressure sales, telling them I could get it done for £75 didn't stop them, they harped on about how the £75 windscreen is "not the same as original equipment" as if it was going to be opaque and made of plywood or something.
They've got a good screw with the insurance companies and advertise plenty on the telly to get business from people who need chips doing, and I think they offer normal paid work just in the hope they find someone who's been dropped on their head.

I have been a windscreen fitter for way to many years, i have done repairs on all sorts, if the screen has a chip get it done a.s.a.p, otherwise moisture and dirt will get in which makes the job harder to do and you will see the dirt in the chip.after the repair has been done. As long as your insurance has windscreen cover and you use the ( don't laugh ) approved windscreen company your covered, you may have to pay a small xs. If you leave it and the frost gets to your screen you could be looking at a £70-£100 xs or more for the screen replacement ! Then you will to have to have it replaced, you will have someone from say Autofarse round on your car and would not recommend that :-(
I worked for Autofarse for a while after coming from a small windscreen firm, i thought it would be a good move but soon found out what kind of fitters they had, Autofarse has all the equipment but its then given to people who don't give a dam about the finished job, you can use the small independent windscreen firms but they have a smaller limit and you have to pay the difference !
Moral of this story get your chips done or risk a big bill.

I had a tractor chuck a boulder at my junk mk4 escort and done the screen. Went straight to autoglass and the fella repaired it and done an absolutely amazing job, epic even. He even cleaned the front of the car! Free coffee too... I wasn't happy as I could now see out of it properly and had to go find the nearest pond and recover it all in filth. I guess I was lucky. Billericay autoglass.... Honest worker point +1
