I've recently been thinking about a new (to me anyway) retro vehicle of some sort, as I no longer need to drive to work, so something that can be off the road from time to time, and all that petrol money can go on fun stuff. My ideas change every damn week to be honest (as i'm guessing a lot other peoples do too), but finding something that isnt generally loved by the masses, and hasnt been modified by everybody and their brother is a high priority. I was thinking of a K10 micra, but wasnt sure i'd ever really like it, plus it was brought to my attention on here, so its been done already to a certain extent. The idea this week (as the title gives away right at the start) involves the MG 1100/1300, or any of its ADO16 variations. Seemingly unloved, but (apparently) with all of the handling virtues of the mini, and more space inside than you'll ever need. A-Series engine, so no shortage of ideas there. Rock bottom prices, as far as a quick interweb search shows anyway. It would seem like a decent idea. So what about finding one of these and stuffing the engine (and running gear?) from a Rover Metro GTi 16v in it? That'd give it 105bhp in standard form (from the Mpi version), strip the rest of the car out, so it'd go ok. Couple of questions tho: these run hydrolastic (a la metro) so can the same principle for lowering be applied here (thinking of slaters approach)? Secondly, should I bother? Lastly a couple of pics, one for ideas; And one for laughs..

The photoshop is "pretty simple" to achieve... hefty drop with 15" BRM (replicas) and some adapters to get them on the hubs... might need some fiddling with the arches to get it all to be driveable,... but worth the effort for an outstanding car!

If you want my oppinion you will find no better retro car out there to modify at this point in time. Ive been thinking about it for a while now and they are just so perfect it needs to be done!
British stuff of this kind of age is the number one untapped resorce of retro motoring! BL stuff semes to have been forgotten by most car builders (and the world in general tbh). We have had awsome VW's, Ford's even J stuff and Volvos have 'been done' for the most part! but have you ever relly seen a seriously cool 1100 ,1800, allegro, marina, ital etc?? I havent! just like i hadent seen a good metro when i dicided that might be a good car to build.
Further to that they are avalible tax exempt, they use mini parts and engine which means easy fastness and stopping power! sound familar?
Anyway its simple. Buy a good example with a years ticket for £500-1000. Get a 1300cc if you don't want to do to much to the engine as they aint too slow with a stage 1 kit. Apply a set of decent wheels and a healthy dose of stick and you will have the coolest car of 2007 so far... guarenteed! all for under a couple of grand and a little work (and i mean a little! it dosent have to be a big project)
Do it so i stop wanting to!!!!

Dude! I'm doing a Turbo conversion on mine. Anything wider than a 165 (trust me...I know) will rub. So It's either inner or outer arch mods a plenty The ADO16 specialist is just down the road from me, so far I've had.....the car..2 doors...2 ARBs ...2 engines (and maybe a 3rd ) and a set of bumpers..........and only paid for the car and the chrome bumper bolts. I know of a 2 door MG that might be for sale. Just had a sheed load of work done to the sills and inner wings, but still need TONS doing. will see what t'old man has to say on Saterday. I talked with him at length about K-power, but the amount of work involved is huge. Will post pick of Type R powered 1100 to demonstrate. A few links to be going on with. www.ado16.info/ www.ado16forums.info/Tho the general rule of thumb, is that the forum is full of ppl who just want to presurve their cars 'as-is'

Cheers for the link and pick bobz, not sure i fancy the amount of work involved in the engine swap at the moment, it'd have to be a flip front jobbie if i went that way, and i don't have anywhere to do that just now. A fast a-series sounds better (in a monetary and audio sense), keep it on the road and do bits here and there especially if slaters price bracket is correct... (goes off to scour ebay..)

*Digs around in readers rides* Here it is : Plan is being put into action on a 1969 Riley Kestral and for cheap power I'm going to put a 620Ti motor in it. ;D I will keep you posted on progress when it kicks off.

Sounds good, would like to see this. You sized up the t-series motor yet? I'm not trying to curse word on your ideas, but its a big engine. quite deep. Kestrel is probably the rarest variation innit? Sure practical classics did a resto a couple of years ago
