There's a lot of cars that feature on here which aren't widely appreciated by the masses anymore. However I'm wondering if there's any which aren't, and will never be appreciated by even us?? My nomination is........ Or am I wrong? Have they gone so far past uncool, they are now kinda cool (I know what I mean!!). Any other nominations??

I like all of those, though definitely not "wide-boy" Vitaras as in the pics above. Am I a mental? Vitaras and Fronteras are good off-roaders in standard form, and not really curse word at all. The Duster is woeful, but has some Eastern European shoddy charm about it.

Normal Vitara's escape....it's specifically the Wide/Fat boy ones that I'm nominating.
P.s I also like the Ducato and the Duster

I remember seeing a wideboy vitara advertised in the NW autotrader a long time ago and the dealer selling it wrote in the ad "Imagine this bad boy coming up behind you in the fast lane".
If that happened to me I'd be thinking either "god I must be going slowly", "Blimey, what a fast hairdresser" or "look at that sad curse word".
As I recall, and a friend in the trade us3ed to tell me, the Frontera is one of the worst vehicles ever made. Dire on road, shocking off road, and curse word poor reliability to boot.
I recall when it came bottom of the Top Gear/Power survey for the umpteenth year running they had some woman on recounting the tale of when hers went in for its second new gearbx in 2 years and the repalcement broke on the way home. PMSL.

you think the dacia's bad ? our mazda dealership back in the 90's started selling mahindra jeeps. oh my god were they bad..
i had to drive one between 2 dealerships and i don't think i've been so scared driving anything else (allegedly new) since
NO brakes to speak of . steering wheel the size of a bus which if you turned it in the direction of where you wanted to go , the rest of the 'jeep' kinda figured it out and followed eventually ;D
and don't ask about the dashboard which was held on by self tapping screws - i kid you not - FRIGHTENING !!!! never , EVER will it or should it be loved!

Vitara's are actually quite capable in the right hands.
And even in standard from they have great induction noise.
A mate of mine hade one a few years back, and at the time we ribbed him heartily about it, esp when he got stuck in the mud which failed to stop a 1.3 Orion. He now owns a new beetle, so the ribbing continues.
But I have seen a few done 'properly' (High-lift, skinny rims etc) that can hold their own off road. And more 'agricultural' members of the family swear by them as they are better for lamping and more reliable for a Land Rover.
As for the Frontera, they are bobbins IMO. You can break the diffs on them just by showing them some mud. The most amusing experience I had with one was when another mate bought one in lilac (pink!) for about £7k. We persuaded him to take it off road. I have never seen a grown man cry like that when he got out and realised he'd just f*cked the paintwork totally within 20mins.
If you need to go mudding, you can't be precious. And the best tool for the job is comin' straight out of Solihull. Pref. with a 3.9 V8 in it. ;D

Oh, deffo agree with that. The X3 is the most pointless creation ever. Having 'I AM A TWUNT' tattoo'd on your forehead is much cheaper.
The current crop of expensive off-roaders are in a similar crisis, despite any better capability.
X5's, Cayenne's and RangeRover Sport's might be not only fast on the road and fairly adept off the road, but anything that gets pictured in 'Heat' being filled with Asda bags by Jade Goody is tarnished for eternity, image-wise. The ultimate statement of 'I-have-lots-of-cash-but-no-idea-what-to-do-with-it'.

The Vitara to me is a useful vehicle but not particularly in this country, they're used to brilliant effect in places like Greece where you'd want something mostly for regular road driving but to occasionally tackle dusty gravel tracks in which would batter the bodywork of a normal car. However, that would be in standard form, because "bad boy" ones tend to look like ridiculous plastic rubbish. And in this country I can't really see much point in owning one to be honest. Though one more point in its defence, in Japan it is called an Escudo, you may recall the Escudo Pikes Peak!: Anyway, I propose the following: BMW 1-Series: Whatever advantage BMW gained in offering these for sale was countered by them further dragging their brand image through the mud! Hateful cars and not very good either, to me they exist only so people on company car schemes can say they've got a BMW.

both beemers mentioned - i absolutely love.
not to mention the porsche cayanne.
no 3 cars have managed to be hated by more people - bmw/porsche owners hate them, non bmw/porsche owners hate them, and are generally the most antisocial cars to ever grace this earth.
which is why i love them so

I'm gonna stick up for the vitara - i don't have a soft spot but they are cherished by their owners. therfore they are getting a cult ownership now, which is kewl for them
i nominate the entire SSangYong range, the current Chevy Europe range (Daewoo) and the Ford Fusion, New Focus, Renault Megane Scenic, current 3 Series, Rover CityMetro, Rover 25, Mercedes CLS500 (new bus), entire current VW range, and the bugeye Toyota Corolla for being as ugly as sin. thats all for now!

I don't know if they were ever truly cool... did catch my eye as a kid though I always struggle with whats cool these days. I know what I value as cool, but is it the same as everyone else I know its the same as some people here but does that count? hmm yeah it does! Most of us accept that everything has potential, and it wont take much to drag some out of a Vitara. and if its so un cool eventually it becomes cool. Id have one anyways, but it would have to get good at something. Theres a dude on here making a lowrider one x100

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

A long wheelbase diesel Frontera isnt that bad a proposition. A short wheelbase Frontera "Sport" is less like driving a car and more like being cast adrift in a homemade raft.
No point having a go at all these off roaders and luxury cars - what about proffessional dad wagons? All these awful cars designed as though the only thing that matters about a car is that the spoilt kids in the back have an absorbing time cocooned in the back with DVD players built into the seats and silly seating arrangements instead of just looking out of the window and getting a thick ear in a layby every so often for acting up, like the good old days! I`m talking Nissan Note (Note? Note? Thats a car name all of a sudden? For F**cks sake!), Renault (insert name of clever family lifestyle vehicle here, they're making that many of the things) Those horrific Vauxhalls like the Meriva and that other thing, That Honda with its "clever" seats oh I don't know what its called. These things will be around for a long time as MPVs always command more money 2nd hand resulting in them being kept going for longer than normal cars, but when their time is up, they will be gone! All of them! No-one will want to preserve them in the way that they will possibly preserve things like the Citroen C4 or the Mazda 6.
