yet another wake up call for old car owners Now new cars are harder to nick, the old ones are going to be the targets so GET SOME SECURITY! If you park your old car in the street with nothing to disable it then you are likely to end up suffering this kind of thing. When I used to have my Datsuns parked out in the street back when they were getting stolen left right and centre for export, I had them chained together in pairs or to lamp posts. It might sound excessive and it might seem like a lot of hassle but it's a lot less hassle than having it nicked! People on here should know better than most how common the theft of old cars is becomming so don't be complacent... get it secured. Sorry to hear about you car getting torched fella. Sound like it could be fixable. There's a 100E in a scrappy near me that might donate a straight roof skin if your is too far gone.

If you think about it, scrotes have been nicking Sierras, Novas, Cavaliers etc for so long there arent many left apart from the ones people are bothered about that have aftermarket immobilsers fitted, so they're probably now turning to even older stuff and classics. From 1995 onwards just about everything has a chip key immobiliser, so the newer of the old bangers are hard to nick.
Everyone with an old car they want to hang onto should at least have a touch key immobiliser and a disklok, and park with the wheels turned to the kerb - a MK2 Escort near me recently had its handbrake let off when the scrotes couldnt get it started and it rolled a long way down the hill until it eventually wiped itself out along with the Volvo 440 it smashed into.

Makes me so angry! Sorry to hear that. be great to see it brought back to life with help from friends if remotely poss... As said above, we all need to step up our act, I'm actually getting paranoid, well more paranoid. Adding to security as we speak...

sorry to hear about this, give it a week and someone will be bragging about it in the pub/ internet / outside off licence etc, just got to get someone to hear them... bad luck, i do hope it can be sorted and revived. any before pics? it really should inspire owners of other cars to fit some kind of immobiliser, even if its a simple one i remember one advertised years ago in street machine, which i tohught was a good idea, u placed a magnet over it to start the car and removed it to immobilise it, cant remember what it was called tho, another good one is called dis car nect. or something just goes onto battery, means lifting bonnett / boot every time to use it tho. also i know a lot of classics have most of the ignition loom exposed, i don't know any way of hiding it effectivley. but if re wiring, armoured cable may be a good idea?

oh another thing i remembered a friend of mine used to have a 2 position toggle switch hidden, in one position the coil was active when the ignition was on, in the other he had an old house alarm siren connected up! (air raid style) was rather loud pretty much everyone around heard that!!!

Hope the culprits get burned in a field, see how they like it! Horrible news - I'm sure people on this forum will help you obtain all the required parts to get it back on the road again. I'm absolutely paranoid about my cars because of things like this, I don't like leaving any of them anywhere because there's just too many scum around with no respect for people's belongings. I worry more about mindless vandalism than anything else, so I invest a lot of money in security devices for the cars, not just installed on the actual car! Here is the first stage of my latest one, as seen from my desk: Perhaps it is overkill, but I can't place a value on my cars and these budget all-in-one camera setups are surprisingly cheap in Maplins! Planning to get a few more, one day I'll end up with a bank of monitors. Then I can live out my dream of being a night watchman.

I'm really sorry to hear about the theft, little scumbags
I just wanted to say be very careful with the burn out car, when some types of rubber get to over 400 degrees they decompose and produce hydrofluoric acid. This stuff is really nasty, its a calcifying agent and if it touches your skin will immediatly start travelling through your flesh and pull the calcium out of your bones, not good.
Gloves are a must id say!
Hope you get some witnesses so you can collar the scoundrals

Heartbreaking They will think its hilarious until somone burgalls their house or trashes their car, then theyl see just how un-bloody-funny it really is. And to think, if you caught them in the act and gave them a bally good hiding it would be YOU in trouble!

....u placed a magnet over it to start the car and removed it to immobilise it.... That would be a pretty easy sorta thing to replicate though. You'd just need a reed switch and a relay into the circuit you wanted to break. Put the reed switch just inside an air vent maybe, then have a strong magnet on the back of an air freshener? Voila, remove the clip-on air freshener and the car won't start. I can't see many scumbags working that one out, whereas they might come across hidden toggle switches etc by chance.

A fantastic idea, odin. However, I can't help thinking putting it on a public forum may have been a mistake, as the more organised among these scumbags do research on enthusiast forums...

the vent idea is really good, heres some pics originally i was keeping this pop original and going to modify the other one i have which donated some parts for this one. I'm going to rebuild this one, i guess this will be the modified one as the other one is more complete. one idea i had today, has anyone seen a convertible pop? or could some one photo shop me one? also i think the engine might be creamed as i took the dipstick out and its bent and it was not before, so its either heat related or its thrown a rod. i had planned for the modified one a 1600 x flow sierra type 9 and use the sierra axle assembly and front cross member and legs also. whatever happens its not come to the end of the road yet, ive repaired a car that someone set fire to before, it wasn't as bad just needed a headliner dash seats n carpet, I'm glad i never caught them because i would probably do something silly and regret it

Madmart - how about making a speedster pop? Tiny aero screen, tonneau cover, smoothed? I'm still a fan of the half-bottle-of-vodka-left-in-the-glovebox-and-filled-with-brake-fluid idea... Stick a label on the back or bottom of the bottle saying 'spare dot5' or similar to cover your ass. *n

Gutted for you mate survived for all those years only to end up like that Hope something good comes of it theres houses all around the green, surely a side valve pop would have woken someone up being screamed about a field practically outside there front door? I agree, someone must have seen something sureley?

Buying a BMW or a Bentley & looking cool is easy, but the credit doesn't go to you.Taking an unloved car that cost £500 & making it good enough to get photos in magazines or stand out alongside cars that cost one hundred times more is a skill reserved for us loonies!
