Time to move the Whale on I think.
I bought this back in July, after it was spotted laying dormant in Gray and Daves unit by the intrepid KFW.
I'd wanted a 'full size' sedan and this is as big as Chrysler made in '84.
From what I can make out its been over here since '97, must've been a personal import, though why anybody would spend good money shipping this over is beyond me. Its getting to be pretty cool now, but in '97 it was a deeply undesirable I'd imagine.
So, onto the car itself:
When I bought it it was 2weeks out of MOT and had only done a handfull of miles all year.
I stuck it in for an MOT in pretty short order and it failed
As you can see, thats very little to fail on for a 28y/o American car thats been sitting for best part of a year, and my tester commented on just how clean it is underneath (Ive had a look, theres not a spot of rust), how well the brakes work (it stops clean and staight on the road and locked all 4 up on the rollers) and how clean it was running.
I did the required and got myself a 12month ticket.
After that, I spent a good month trying to eradicate a running issue.
I've replaced the problematic SCC (spark control computer) and LeanBurn/Smog control equipment with a much simpler Holley, distibutor and (new) electronic ignition setup.
Its had a new fuel pump (which actually failed, so its back on the pump that was on when I bought it, but a new pump will be included)
New plugleads
New Fuel filter
New Airfilter
New rotor arm
New Distibutor Cap
Secondhand Holley Carb (with LPG capibility)
S/hand non-ECU distributor
S/hand non-ECU airbox.
Unfortunately, none of this solved the issue, so we ended up dropping the tank (which is immaculate inside) and found a rubber hose to be collapsing under load causing it to cut out. A 6inch piece of pipe later and it was all sorted.
New headlight switch (as the leaking windscreen had rusted out some contacts)
Resealed the windscreen with clear bathroom sealer and it seems to be doing the job nicely.
A pair of new horns.
Ive cleaned the interior, although, after a couple of months of enjoying it (including 2weekends camping) it could do with another decent clean which it will get.
On the inside most stuff works:
O/S/R electric window doesn't (you can hear the motor 'click') and all of the windows are a little 'cluncky' in use.
The indicator telltale light is a small green LED that I have bodged in for the MOT, its functional, but for from perfect.
AC doesn't work, although it may just need a regass.
As mentioned, the speedo doesn't work.
Backlight for the 2main dials doesn't work, but the 2 accessory dails do.
Headlining has dropped.
Powerlocks only unlock on the button.
Outside Ive taken the wheeltrims off, though I do still have the full set, but I prefer the 'cop steels' look. The whiteband tyes are all in reasonable condition, theres plenty of tread, but there are a couple of nicks on the sidewalls.
The vinyl top is not ripped or damaged, other than a very small repair.
The only rust I can find on the car is the panel along the base of the rear screen where there are some bubbles under the paint.
The 318 (5.2 in real money) runs nice, its used no fluids over the last 1000miles (other than a tankers' worth of unleaded). I have a full set of sparkplugs to go with the car, and I dare say it'd run even better with them in.
The autobox works as it should, goes in all the gears smoothly, other than reverse which can engage with a bit of a clunk sometimes.
I have noticed that when cold there is a clicking in park, but it goes off when in neutral/in gear and it goes completely with a little bit of warmth through it.
And I think thats all.
I will be putting some pictures up this evening when I get home, but for now have a little look here
