Gonna be buying my first car any time now, and i've narrowed it down to Golf Mk1s and Mk2s. I've been told the Mk2 would be the better choice, but i just want someones opinion who has driven both of them what the actual difference is? How do they both drive? <-- Obviously talking about the Golf Drivers Also, not talking about driving experience, is there any thing that the Mk2 has that the Mk1 doesn't, and vice versa? Thanks

I'm sure there are more knowledgeable people on here who will put me right, but wasn't the Mk1 Driver a 1300 with 4 speed, and the Mk2 a 1600 5 speed?? Just a thought...insurance....

I would get a polo 1300 mate. Same engine as is in a Golf 1300 but a lighter car and suprisingly cheaper insurance (well thats what my mate found anyway)

i've had mk1 and mk2's and loved them both, mk1's just look so right i'd have to go for one of those again one day i suppose rust on old mk1's could be the main problem...

I've had both and I would rate them both as good cars.
The Mk1 was more fun simply because it was a bit lighter and its handling and roadholding was more entertaining but unless you want the cachet of a Mk1 the Mk2 is a very acceptable alternative. Both cars were good enough that when I came to buy a new car a few years ago I went straight for one of the last Polos built on that platform and I wasn't disappointed.
The earlier Polo? Never had the 1300 but my mother is on her second 1100 Mk2. Good car but just a little bit insubstantial for my tastes.

i got some silly quotes for a mk1 golf when i wanted one, mk2's would be a bit less, mk2s do come in a 1300 as my mates got one, he picked it up for 600 quid and its been an absoltue star ever since. if it were me id pick up a polo. very cheaper, look well with golf mods.

mk1 is the better looking car I feel and non-GTis are cruelly over-looked.
Or get a mk1 Jetta. There are quite a few owners of these lovely motors on this site!

I know of a Mk1 car with virtually totally rust free shell thats been made to look like a GTi and has a Gti engine fitted, its registered and sorned but needs an engine rebuild and good going over, most of interior is out but should all be there, front wings are cheaper replacements. I doubt it would be very expensive and would make a great project.
