Warning!!
I started a Policy with them after being told my renewal was going to be more expensive than them.
I then found out that that wasn't true so rang them back that night to cancel the policy. But by the time I got through they were closed.
So I rang back at 8am the following day to cancel the policy. I got through and asked them to cancel the policy. This was BEFORE the policy was supposed to start later that day. I was told that this was fine and that the policy had been cancelled, yet the money was still earmarked in my account to go out. I was told I would recieve my money back.
However yesterday the money was taken out of my account. So I rang up today to dispute this. Apparently the person should have told me that I needed to send my certificate (which I didn't recieve until today) back so that the policy could be cancelled!!
So now I'm seriously overdrawn, as my renewal had gone out as well.
I've been on the phone to them 3 times today!! Twice I was put on hold then cut off!!
Everyone I've spoken to has given me a different story!! I hope other people haven't had the problems I've had. Maybe its just me but the fact they didn't even tell me I'd need to send my Certificate in really annoys me.

The fact the money came out of your account is down to the bank(s), Not the insuranc ecompany. Like they said they'll refund it back to you. As for the certificate, You wouldn't expect tescos to refund a tin of beans if you didn't return them would ya? Insurance companies make it all up as they go along. Edit: and it stops you using the certificate if you get stopped by the feds as proof of insurance too.

Edit: and it stops you using the certificate if you get stopped by the feds as proof of insurance too. I seriously doubt that would work now. My GF got stopped by the filth and despite having all her docs on here all legal like, they still treated her like a criminal and gave her the third degree in the back of the cop car just because their system didn't show the car up as insured. She's insured with the AA so it's not like it's some small company either. They weren't satisfied until she'd managed to get through to the AA on the phone and got them to confirm she was insured. Their parting words were "well it seems we need to take no action this time, you can go". They didn't even appologise for inconveniencing her. A-holes

A-holes Sounds typical - but I wouldn't have bothered to even try and ring the AA at the roadside - just asked for a producer HORT5 (I think these days) You do not have to have any documents with you in a car You do not have to be on any database that the police have access too either You have 7 days to produce documents at a police station of your choice - me I tend to make it just the other side of the border - just to be irritating and then it has to go via another counties headquarters back to the original officer so can take several weeks ;D

Bell is a trading name of Admiral - same as Diamond and Elephant among others.
Last year my wife had a policy with Diamond, and rang them to cancel it when the renewal came through as I was going to insure it instead. They didn't mention anything about returning the certificate, all was well. Next thing we know there's a debt recovery letter arrive for 90-odd quid! Apparently it's for the insurance we 'used' between it starting and them failing to take the second installment (first one also failed, as the DD had been stopped) at which point they cancelled the insurance.
They're getting it at £5 a month. Morons.

i was with elephant and ive jsut got the 2nd letter demanding at the start i send back the old certificate they sent in the automatic renewal (which of course being ludicrous i didnt take) it also says at the bottom of the letter if i don't send it back they will cancel the policy as requested. so why do i wnat to waste 30p here and a good envelope? you DO NOT have to send back the policy. you will hopefully get a full refund very soon. as its before the issue date their should be no discrepancies whatsoever in the 2 amounts. you have 14 days with all policies as a cooling-off time. provided you don't claim during that time you can get a full refund. and a phonecall is adequate cancellation notice provided you gave security details. next time you ring keep hitting 9 until you get through, and demand to speak to a superior and explain as above. good luck

Be VERY careful..... according to their small-print (and of course they own your ass and can do whatever they please as long as you've ticked the box saying "I've read the small print and understand it") the insurance is still active and being used until they get the certificate back, or they send you a letter saying that the certificate is invalid. They'll drag their feet sending the letter as they hope you're not going to send it back, and they can charge you! They'll charge you for the insurance used, and it's not a linear amount.... we got charged 1/5th of the policy for 30 days 'use' which seems pretty crappy, but the same as most places.
