when i first started in RC1800 packs were the nuts, got back into it a few years ago and bought a few 3000, difference is amazing, i have 9 packs now as well as the older ones that were still ok, i usually get bored before i run out of batteries but my charger works of the mains or a car battery and will fast cahrge anyway so i can run for a whole afternoon with no bother.
thats the other thing with batteries, get a decent peak charger that senses how much and how to charge the packs and you'll see loads of difference, not at home so cant check my packs, but my old ones are nicads and the new ones are nimhs i think, much better than the old nicads, more power and last longer, go flat almost instantly rather than winding down like the old ones used to, don't write of electric RC's if you havent played with the new packs and chargers, they make a hell of a difference.

I have been involved with RC scene from a very early age and achieved about 15th in the BRCA championship at one point and also appeared on BBC TV on a programme called Move It. The programme was presented by Simon O’Brian (Brooky) and Fiona Lee-Frasier (Grange Hill), I came second place in the RC car race, nearly winning a Tamiya Astute. I packed it all in to study for A Levels but my dad carried on with organising meetings and running his RC Model business. He now runs the biggest RC meetings in the north at Don Valley in Sheffield and Dronfield. Fortunately my dad took pitty on many kids who had cars that under performed and regularly took their old Tamiya’s in part ex for Schumacher’s and Kyoshos etc. He never got rid of any and we now have a fair bit of coin in used and NOS Tamiya / Kyosho / Schumacher and PB (remember them ?) Here’s a list of what I have personally owned / raced (some of the latter I still have) roughly in order:
Tamiya Sandscorcher Tamiya Rough Rider Tamiya Ford Ranger Tamiya Super Champ Tamiya Wild Willy Tamiya Lambourgini Cheetah Mardave Marauder Mardave Mini Stock Tamiya Holiday Buggy Tamiya Sand Rover Tamiya Porsche 959 (12th scale) Tamiya Toyota Celica (12th scale) Tamiya Ferrari F1 Tamiya Wild One (Favourite!) Tamiya Hot Shot Tamiya Hot Shot 2 Tamiya Big Wig Couple of 12th scale cars A 1/8th petrol circuit car Kyosho Ultima Kyosho Optima Kyosho Optima Mid Kyosho Optima Mid Custom Special Schumacher Cat Schumacher Top Cat Scumacher Boss Cat Tamiya Clod Buster as Grave Digger Schumacher Cougar Schumacher Storm Schumacher Cougar 2 Mardave Cobra Mardave Beetle (based on mini stock)
There are probably more that I have briefly owned. And here are just a few of what I know my dad has got: NOS Optima NOS Hot Shot (with upgraded front shocks) Tamiya Holiday Buggy 4x Sand Scorchers / Rough Riders NOS Lambourghini Cheetah Schumacher Cougar Schumacher Cat Schumacher Storm The 12th scale Porsche & Toyota Mardave Cobra Tamiya Wild Willy Tamiya Clod Buster (Grave Digger) Tamiya Monster Beetle. Loads of NOS Tamiya bits and Boddies. Boxes and boxes of used chassis, bits and bobs up in the shed !
I will try and get some pictures ! Ben

Nitro all tyhe way!, apart from that fact electric cars are just bloody boring to work on. You can use them for as long as you want. With a battery car to have to have loads of batteries to use them for more than an hour or so any batterys take years to charge properly as oppose to 10seconds to fill the tank on a nitro car, if you good you can do it wharlst its still running aswell..
with the battery cars ive used they take about 10 hours to charge and you get about 10min use out of them!

Then had saved enough pennies to purchase this beauty as soon as it came out: OMG! the Mid along with the Schumacher Cat were the cars to have when I started racing - I remember there were loads of updated variants of the mid, the last one being called the Optima Mid Custom Special Pro SE or something similarly long winded ;D Before they ran out of describing words & brought out the ZXR Isn't the glow fuel a mixture of Caster oil, Methanol & Nitro? I must admit the I.C powered cars are good fun but the engines can be tempermental - electric cars are cleaner, can be just as fast & with the new high capacity cells and a decent quick charger can run for as long in between charge ups/re-fills. For a beginner who wants instant plug & play action I would recommend an electric car.

Electric cars are so much easier on the ear as well.. Roccoben I may well have to have words with you about the Retro Rides show r/c stuff... For the record I had a Tamiya Supershot, but really wanted a Kyosho Ultima

Electric cars are so much easier on the ear as well.. I concur - one I.C car in the park is ok, but a gaggle of them racing is the nearest thing to Chinese torture - I once helped run a 1/10 I.C truck national meeting.... ooooo never again ;D

That's it, it's all too much - I am going to have to hit the 'bay for a couple of cars for my boys after Christmas... The fact that they are both only nearly 3 years old means I will have to sort the cars out and look after them for a while before letting the boys loose with the cars What's a good site for learn about all the new fangled stuff since I gave it all up 15 years ago?

best thing to do i found out was to go into your local model shop and find out what they stock spares for, nothin more anoying than buying an RC and then having to wait a week for bits everytime you break it!!

Mt mate had a Tamiya Hornet which was later replaced with a Kyosho Optima Mid Custom Special. I wanted a Tamiya Avante for ages (they later brought out a new version which was similar but some of the alloy parts had been remade in glass reinforced plastic (I think).
I presently own both a Mardave Ministock and a mighty Mardave Marauder! The later is indestructable, unstopable and thanks to no diff (as standard) is undriveable on hard surfaces. Very crude, very agricultural, very tough and very much fun (on grass). I can't bare to part with it. Though it could do with a new engine.

Ah this thread brings back some memories I started out back in about '87/88 with a Hornet which I constantly broke, it ended up with loads of metal bits that me and my dad had made but it was great fun that car. I then moved on to a Ministock with a custom wide arched bodyshell which I still have today. I changed it over to 7.2V with a tamiya hump back battery that fitted underneath the wider body. Went like stink. Than came along an Optima mid custom which I saved for ages for. That was an awesome car with loads of carbon fibre bits. I remember the front suspension being a bit weak and I replaced it with metal bits that I thn kept bending. I sold that to pay for a Kyosho nitro Corvette which to be frank was curse word. It was slow and had curse word handling and the body used to make it fly off the track. The engines used to break rods and I replaced it with a slightly bigger engine that never quite fitted properly. That engine ended up mounted sideways in an ultra wide Ministock when I was about 15. Went like a drag car in a straight line but was uncontrollable. Tried loading up the front with weight to mae it steer but it was no use... Bought myself another Ministock when I was working at 17 and made a stretched chassis and ran it under an A Team van body sprayed up with what looked like cool graphics at the time. Still got that too. I ran that with a 7.2V humpback as well but this time a 17-turn double motor with wet magnets and timing control. That was soooooo fast it was uncontrollable but with a leccy speed controller it made it easier. Swapped those bits into a Tamiya Grasshopper I picked up cheap and put on a huge VW beetle body. It was a riot of a drive and would pick up the front wheels but couldn't steer very well without rolling over Ultimately the gearbox just sheared into bits and chewed up all the gears. I don't think it was meant to handle the power! I'd have another one of them, I notice the Hornet is being rereleased...

Its funny that this thread was here as only a week or so ago I bought a tamiya Midnight Pumpkin for the young lad's christmas. I see that Tamiya have released new versions of some of the classics (Lunch Box, Grasshopper etc). Its pretty cool and I'll bet i'm up as early as he is on Christmas morning raring to get going building it, I already have the battery packs charged up. "Back in the day" I had a Tamiya Bigwig, it was the business, I got hacked off with constant battery charges and went Nitro and bought myself a 1/8 scale monster Truck, The Mean Muddere its called and although the original bodyshell is trashed, I still have it in the garage. I also have a RC10GT in there too but it needs a new chassis plate and front bracing due to a work colleague going headfirst into a wall at full pelt. They too are on my long list of things to do but at present appear after the Triumph estate and the Evo 2.

Triumph Estate to do list: 1. Remove Rover V8 - done 2. chop, weld, spray - ongoing, need motivation 3. drop in RB25 4. burn rubber

::)This thread I only meant to take a quick peek and now you've had me scavenging on Ebay and scanning old photos. My first RC car was a Tamiya Thundershot (I think you guessed right on Wednesday Dan?) I tinkered wiht that a while and then got a Schumacher Top Cat - the one with the laid down shocks. I got into racing this a bit and it ended up converted to traditional Cougar shocks, slipper drive, etc. I once won a B final at a the club I went to adn was pretty chuffed! I stull haev teh trophy but then I got into "big" cars andf the RC stuff got put away. It's still all over at my mums though I'm getting pretty tempted by the banger race/ministock things though - it'd take less work to get driving a diddy replica of my Oxford around than it would get the real thing going again Me, aged 16 3/4 Why I rarely won: I was too busy driving like this and having fun
