I remember the crash information because it was distributed through Halfrauds; Marina/Itals actually came out quite high considering when they were built... Just remember; a 4" (100mm) tree can cut a car in half..........I've seen it done

2CVs are surprisingly sturdy in a crash. Nothing will save you if this happens though... Yep, and when I've pulled up suddenly from 70 to the end of a tailback on the motorway, that'll be why I don't stop looking in the mirror until I'm sure that everything behind me is slowing normally... Safe Christmas driving everyone, and remember it brings out the occasional and bad tempered drivers...

Do a search for Smart Car crashes (i don't have time, i'm off home) There great, the metal cage is just that, a really thick roll cage. there's a vid of one hitting an old Merc 500SEL and the Merc folds like paper and the cage of the Smart is still in perfect nick! The plastics don't fair up as well mind... To be fair the passengers would get severly boned in a crash like that as they would effectively be taking the energy that a crumple zone would usually absorb. *makes note not to drive into trees* *makes second note not to drive smart cars* Exactly my thoughts. however, i really would have a smart car, yes specially if there was a city commute to do mainly think less being crushed, more getting your cage rattled lol And yes i have avoided trees this evening! Also the very first sierra were bad for safety due to a weak trans tunnel or summat but this soon got remedied, still not the toughest nut though i appreciate!

That Mini posted by v8 mike looks to have stood up really well to say it was in a 40mph impact, people always say you`ve no chance in a Mini but thats not the first time I`ve been surprised at how they keep their shape in a crash. I don't think you could ever really predict how your car will bend in a crash, too many variables, this happened at around 50-55 mph: And really apart from the A-pillar my untrained eye would have put that at about 30. I was that impressed with how it stood up and the fact that I was in work that afternoon as opposed to nowhere at all ever again that I eventually had it fixed. In this case the Mazda had hit an overturned car, which might account for it looking like this, had I run into a stationary lorry at that speed I don't reckon this post would be on this thread. Incidentally, the Mazda braked in a nice straight line from 70 down to 50+, it had just had new discs and pads for the MOT it had just passed, just shows you cant put a price on good brakes.

Bang on, always very picky with mine - have totally rebuilt the systems on almost all my cars - fortunately, the new one has just been rebuilt before I bought it and after checking it over it works beautifully, so happy with that Might get some uprated pads for it, mind....

that was frightening. moral of the story, crash a sierra at 44 mph and prepare to have your neck snapped. at 56mph expect to be decapitated. that is very, very scary given the amount of sierras i've seen lately, mainly owned by travellers and young'uns who will all be drinking likely...

A pillar and all. post flew about 20feet away.

Were you in a Favorit surprisingskoda? If so, heres something to confuse thing further - the car I hit was a 12 year old Favorit, it had rolled like a dice across all 3 lanes eventually having its underside rammed by my 323 - the guy was fine, he went home at the same time as me, and the Favorit, apart from being on its side, looked ready to get back up and have another go, the whole thing was pretty surprising in just about every way, really. Lewisk, I don't think you would ever regret those uprated pads...

in my 'yoof' days i wrote my sierra off into a lamppost backwards at about 60. i was a very lucky boy that night with my lack of a seatbelt and it snowing. my driving has radically changed since those days. and it gave me a valuable lesson. SLOW THE HELL DOWN!!!!

RIP? An old Merc? For that? yep. smashed indicator, dented wing, bent bumper and a dent in the wheel trim. would have cost about £100 quid for me to fix. apparently it was going to be more than £600 for them to do it. I'm having a right mare trying to recoup my losses, the wifey is trying to say it was my fault, even though she was going to the right in the left hand lane!! when i was going straight over. work that one out.

Some scary stuff there. That's one of the major problems with modern cars, 30mph just doesn't feel like 30mph anymore. My Cortina used to feel like it was flying along at 70mph but the same speed in my brothers Laguna feels more like 50mph in comparison.
Going back to the smart car, the decelerating G forces must have been imense and I'd expect broken limbs flailing around inside that little tumble dryier.

All very sobering stuff! I work opposite a Scrap/salvage yard, so I see a lot of horror crash cars, new and old, and can honestly say that it does make you wary of solid objects! Most shocking was a mini that hit armco head on, the sump was where the rearview mirror should be, the whole front twisted up and round so the motor was upside down in the cabin. I've never owned a mini since, its probably irrational, but I cant face them anymore.
Our local banger track wont let the following cars race in 1600 class as they are "too hard" Cortina 3/4/5 Capri Nissan Sunny/Bluebird Toyotas (any)
The racers use escort 3/4 or cav 2/3, folk with sierras last about 2 laps unless well prepped. Speaks for itself, really!

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in
