Following on from some recent posts I'd be interested to know who and what inspires people to do this ? (that's build / repair / suffer retro mobiles NOT post inane messages on the internerd;)) I regularly read people talking about building their cars and their dads helping or 'i did this at work' but what else ? My Dad was never into cars and I work for an insurance company. (Leave it, I feel bad enough already) I have very few friends who are into cars so the only influence I get is going to shows, reading mags and being on here... What about you ? Lucky enough to work in the industry - a prolific car builer for a dad / brother / son ?

My dad is my biggest help and inspiration definately.
Also, loads of people on here such as Slater, BlownImp, Nightmaresracing, V8mike etc. all inspire me with my project(s), and cars on LocostBuilders and ClubPolo respectively.

I seriously believe I was born to do this. None of my family are into cars at all. Few if any of my friends who I have made through "normal" activities are into cars. I have mates who I have made through the whole car thing, but that came later.
My early inspiration came from Custom Car and Street Machine magazines (as well as odd copies of Car Craft and Hot Rod I managed to get hold of) the late lamented Hot Car, Street Rod & Machine Monthley and such. Even early issues of Fast Car when they used to do Cortinas and Mk1 Cavaliers.
After that I guess it was from Santa Pod, Avon Park, Donny show and seeing cool cars out on the street.
I guess when I was a kid I overdosed on watching US TV shows & movies where 60s/70s cars were blasting around like mad and looking cool.
I also vividly remember during the TV union strikes in the late 1970s all live TV was cancelled and instewad of Grandstand all Saturday / Sunday they showed old 1960s Saloon racing footage, grainy black and white footage of Mini Coopers and Mk2 Jags battling it out with '67 Camaros and '64 Ford Galaxies - absolutely amazing stuff to see.

Me and my bro (street) have been into cars since we were kids, so we're always messing about with them!
Seeing other people's projects in the Reader's Rides section is always a massive boost, and I always go away from shows with my head buzzing with ideas and inspiration.
Plus, having got to know a few members on this 'ere forum gives me more people to chat sh!t about cars to! ;D

My dad was a mechanic (or maniac, as the teachers translated my scruffy handwriting in my diary ) working for himself, self taught, he festered with tens and hundreds of old and new cars over the years, Minis, bikes, Volvos, 4x4's (real ones), and the odd plush cruiser, and loads of random stuff. I tinkered in the garage building sculptures and toys etc, razzing about on pedal trikes! He always said 'don't end up like me' so I avoided anything related! so that last help i got off him pre MR2 was my GCSE suspension forks (14 years ago ) not such a great move in everyway, cos I have still ended up scrating about with old tat! Inspired by the past eras, and 'future' or both and custom cars! love of all auto motive 1940's-now as a genaral rule. What boggles me is I could of ended up easily happy with a brisk (probably FWD) newish car, it scares me that this could of happened in search of reliable acceptably fast and economical machine. Sure it would not of come to that, but I guess I have to thank my long time mate for keeping the flame alive, even though his is is on women booze and mountain bikes right now ;D With the flame on full heat thanks to; newish mates, good mags and the internet inc yous, I'm now buzzed up soaking in inspirations from all over and despirate realise some of my automotive dreams.

I genuinely have no idea what inspires me these days, but I'm where I am today because of my father.
He hurried my birth up so he could go racing the following morning, I was then surrounded by vintage and classic cars throughout my life. Then when he passed away it gave me a wake up call, and I became a freelance writer for motoring titles and now I'm here.
Financially and logically my pre-occupation with cars of any sort has made no sense over the years. But I'm still here. ;D

Err........ Tricky - Coming from a family where cars were a neccesary evil required to get you from a 2 b..... It wasn't that then. - Having an uncle who was into restoring old cars may have helped.... (must do a RIP H.H.C thread sometime as they are probably very retro - and it's a nice collection and a tribute to him which I have no doubt will be broken up one day for profit) - Having a grandad who could make anything might have helped But I put it down to - taking every thing I ever owned to bits and putting it back together as a nipper - Graduating to creating/constructing daft push bikes - Wanting more speed so two wheels with engines came next - Wanting to stay dry meant 4 wheels next and to where I am now. But why I keep doing it is down to challange and I take the view if someone put it together then I can take it apart and put it back together again - it's only nuts and bolts

I guess I have my Dad to thank for my obsession with all things automotive...
I can remember sitting in the passenger seat of his Mark 3 Zodiac back in about 1974 whilst he (in his own words) 'bedded the tyres in' by doing a huuuuuge burnout out of some tyre place in Bromsgrove having just had four remould crossplies fitted....I also remember urging him to 'do a Ton, Dad' every time we got on a dual carriageway...and if Mum wasn't in the car he'd normally oblige..... He's come home from work on a Saturday clutching this month's CC or Hot Car or whatever, after he'd finished reading them they would end up in a teetering pile in the lavvy, rather like the one in my own bog some 35 yrs later :-) As soon as I had the money, copies of Hot Rod and Car Craft joined them. Seeing the Rallycross on Grandstand or World Of Sport from a snowy Croft or swampy Lydden Hill awoke my love of motorsport, discovering Drag Racing (I remember seeing the 1/8th mile drags from Long Marston-now SCR-on the TV in the summer of '75, they raced on what's now the pits/sunday market runway) and short circuit the same way. Once I'd got mobile in the early 1980's there was a never-ending stream of modified Minis, Avengers, Escorts and the like outside the house either being worked on or (ahem) 'tested' by me and friends. Mum used to go beserk when things got a bit erm.....out of hand, but Dad's grin as he walked round whatever was making all the noise kinda blanked out Mum's anger :-) Fast Forward 20 more years, and SWMBO doesn't understand it, and never will......but the great thing about her is that she tolerates it all. Almost all my friends are petrolheads be they into rallying or the hot-rod scene, and bless her she just lets us get on with it.
So I guess I have to thank everyone for allowing me to be the sad anorak petrolhead that I know now I will always be...and you guys for making me realise that I wasn't the only one! :-)

All the cars my dad had when I was a kid are now retro. An I thought they were cool as hell when I was little. The 15 year old Rover P6's he had are now classics, the MK5 cortina he had was awesome, the bedford HA van. All cool and all part of my 27 year long childhood

I also have to give honourable mentions to a couple of films I saw when I was a kid and made a HUGE impression on me... Hot Rod, 2 lane blacktop, Duel, Easy Rider, Rebel Without A Cause, and numerous B movies about kids going to the drive-in and racing their hot rods...
That whole hot rod/drag racing/teenage 50's/road trip thing stuck with me as being the ultimate in cool. So modified older cars just always seemed like the cool thing.

Those programmes never really got me as I could tell they were all a bit too "fake" (Sweeny excepted, although I was generally not allowed to watch that when I was a kid). Stuff where the greasy loney outcast fixes his beat up old Willys coupe or '55 Chevy at the side of the road before street racing for money to buy food... now that got my eyes popping out when I was 8 or 9! You never see anyone get greasy or throw a spanner in a fit of temper in Duke of Hazard, Night Rider or the like...

marina rob in da house: Who / What inspires you ?
Not so much who as what.....
Stacks & stacks of magazines with hot rod, street rod, kustom car, chopper, custom bike related topics and books with old style pin ups, old bikes & cars wayyyyy to many to mention is my drug.....
DP says: Add to that a pinch of non-linear-out-of-the-box thinking and it all adds up to My Style...

Style inspires me - to find clothing, food styles or ( the best ) cars that have style........ in abundance - without funding from Beckhams pocket money necessary I have to creep here though - I've found this site more inspirational than the sh*t load of others out there as I drag my sheds into public awareness. Slater, Blownimp, PPC mag (sorry ) , re-animation, pogweasel, etc... etc... - all show how graft ( and a lot of practice I know! ) gets you where you want to go. I've never spent so much time with the fleet as I have after going through this site - currently wanting to get the two big six Triumphs done to see what they look like next to maggotturbo's 2500S ;D The buzz here is the best inspiration you can get - other people who don't ( well not always ) laugh in your face and tell you you're wasting your time! ;D ;D ;D ;D aaaahhhhhhhhhhh - sweet innit

My late grandad is who inspired my love of cars. He was and still is my hero. I could rabbit on for hours about him, and my life is very much poorer since his passing 13 years ago. Unsurprisingly he's the one that got me crazy about Skodas!

Well ofcourse my dad is largely responsible for my interest in cars. Looking at photos and old issues of custom car with his cars in, He put me in a workshop from day 1, I could use a lathe when I was about 8! Built my own bike at 10 and got my first mini when I was 12. Raced karts from 6-16. Built 2 cars before id left school (or got a licence!). All pretty much down to my dad.
Tought me alot but I'm not sure id call it inspiration! my inspiration has come from this place. I didnt know much at all before joining up here. Euro look, Boso, Rat look were all pretty much unknown before RR.
RR showed me the secret to a building a cool car, what it takes to make it look good and what makes cars interesting! Its not about the amount of time it takes or the amount of money you spend, its not about making a shopping list of popular bolt on mods and its not about doing a full concorse reatoration every time. Its not about copying something you like or letting people tell you to do things 'their way'! Just do something differant and if the basics are right it will look good.
I guess racer86 inspired me quite a bit showing me that you can build a damn good car in a week. That and watching Monster Garage! Jesse James is the only person ive even been at all envyous of when it comes to this kind of thing. Just perfection, the appitimy of cool imo!

I'm a bit like you really my dad shows no intrest in cars, he doesnt even posess a driving licence my immediate friends (i.e. college and so on) show little intrest in cars let alone old ones so I guess I get all my inspiration from sites like thus and the shows I visit I can think of 1 fiesta that really inspired me, second time I went down santa pod a black fiesta with the same stickers as me pulled a 15sec run, spoke to the chap afterwards to find a 1.6 x'flow in the bay, and the fact it was as rusty as mine I think being a tad mentally unhinged helps quite allot, certainly does it for me! that also
