Seen here partly buried in junk in my garage... 1200S coupe, one of the 6 right hand drives made (5 still exist in the UK SIMCA club but none are on the road). Last on the road in '77 but in those 10 years managed to rust pretty bad round the arches and sills... as you's expect from a SIMCA 1000 floorpan with an Italian coachbuilder's body... double trouble in the rust stakes. LHD even rustier 1200S I picked up for spares for the RHD car which I'm rebuilding more or less as original. Should be enough left of this one then to make a seriously low, stripped out trackday creation, probably with Honda power.

Rear arch now done with help of what i cut off a Samba front wing to fit big arches.... It pays not to throw anything away..!! !200S coupe had a 1204cc engine running on twin Solex 36PHH carbs (later used on 1000 Rallye 2) that turned out a (lively for its time) 85bhp. A bonus with the RHD car is at just 80000KM, it runs really well. Engine in the other car was a later 1294 which we resurrected and it went on to power my green 1000 and now the 133. Mick

Other side ready for work to start. rear arch lip just broke off as it was a mass of rust & filler. Will cut inner & outer arch back to good metaal (there is some...!!) and seam weld them together before grafting 'Samba' outer arch on as other side. Sill area looks at least as bad as other side...!! Mick

Is it me or does the front end resemble a fiat spider?

There is something of the same lines. Probably some of the same teams had a hand in both designs. For the 1200S, I believe the SIMCA 1000 floorpans were shipped off to Italy to have the bodywork done by Bertone's guys.

Back in '67, a SIMCA 1200S Coupe cost new, in the UK, twice the price of a top of the range SIMCA 1000 Saloon that it was based on. Probably explains why very few were ever sold over here.

1204cc engine on twin 35PHH Solex carbs before it was removed for work on the rear end. Runs well after 80,000km and hardly being used since 1977. Ebay bargain unused Stainless exhaust trial fitted. Mick

Finally got back to work on the 1200S this weekend. Rear subframe complete with suspension and gearbox had to come off for derusting and allow access for welding. Pleasant surprise was all 6 mounting bolts came out cleanly... not always the case on SIMCA 1000's, often the captive nuts break out or even a chunk of the chassis leg comes with them. I can now remove fuel tank which lives above the subframe. It contains some 'stuff' that was once petrol back in '77 when the car was last on the road. Mick

Another shot of rear suspension removed. @67 1200S was first rear engined SIMCA to use 'later' semi trailing arm rear end with more joints in driveshafts. Earlier cars (from '61) had a cruder swing axle set up ...same as on my FIAT 133. Will have to check out subframe... from experience on 30+ SIMCA 1000's. they rot in the corners of the lugs where the trailing arms mount. Mick

Rear subframe out with suspension and gearbox. Looks very rusty but attack with chipping hammer sowed it's still remarkably solid, just needin minimal welding. Now I can get rear end of car high in the air to get on with welding in comfort. Mick

Love the car, +1 for the camera enquiry Have you made a life-size replica out of Lego and taken pictures of that?

Camera is a Kodak Easyshare M863. Take the point about the resolution....my fault, not the camera. I put these shots on the simcatalbotclub forum before this. I had to reduce them in size to put them on there...I messed up somewhere in that process. I'm handier with the spanners than the keyboard...!!! Hoping to get the 1200S welded up and together for early next year as I've got the other coupe and my SIMCA/Talbot 1100 pickup to finish then. Mick
