Now has an outer sill. Made myself more work by cutting too far up quarter panel behind door. I'd allowed for SIMCA 1100 sill I'm using going quite a way up the side in that area but got over enthusiastic when cutting out the rust. Crrently working on filling the gap before joining the sill ti the curved area of the chassis leg where the jacking point had harboured loads of rust. Had to carefully measure sill from other side to ensure curved rear end of sill matches up to arch repair panel when fitted...... Mick

Rear chassis leg and sill are now connected again. Just needs some grinding then I can move on to ends of central crossmember and extra plateI'm adding underneath to block off one of SIMCA's prize rust traps. Then it's finishing off the outer arch and derusting and painting the whole area and I can start reassembling the subframe and suspension I've been cleaning up off the car. Mick

[http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/i347/wardsim/100_2451.jpg/img] A bit more progress. Welding under rear wheearch/sills completed I was able to fit new rear wheelarch.... as on N/S I used the part cut out of a Talbot Samba fibreglass front wing when 'bubble' arches were fitted for racing. Inner & outer arches had been welded inside and sealed with fibreglass to the new arch. Lots of filling needed and not to everybody's taste but it means a major 'rot spot' on the 1200S has been eliminated. Mick.

Buying other SIMCA projects and storing all the parts for them round the 1200S in the garage have held things up recently. Now all the rebuilt, new etc. bits are ready to refit to 1200S shell now there's something welded up to fix them to... Mick

Rear subframe and suspension back in place. Just needs brake, clutch and cooling 'plumbing' completing and it can go back on its wheels ready for work to start on front end. Being rear engined means more pipework for the cooling system of course.... Mick

Back on its wheels at last. Suspension will sink to usual negative camber once engine & box go back in. Next job is to turn it round and lift front end to complete welding and change front suspension to more direct rack & pinion set up as fitted to post '68 SIMCA 1000's & Coupes. Had forgotten what front end looked like...!!! Needs welding to front of sills/inner wheel arch & footwell both sides and front arches are rustier than this photo shows. Bits I cut out of wings on a SIMCA 1000 to fit 'works' arches will supply a 'repair panel' for each side. Front boot space is limited by radiator and its ducting. Mick

Other than small rust holes near indicators front panel has survived well by SIMCA 1200S standards. Some repairs will be needed to 'boot' floor below radiator though. Suspension needs a thorough going over. Everything's very stiff... suppose it's likely to be, not having been on the road since '77. Mick

Front arch lip just broke off by hand being mostly filler. First job was to cut it back to something close to decent metal and weld the inner & outer panels together. Repair panel made from the only bits of the SIMCA 1000 Saloon's wing that doesn't rust (the saloon uses a simpler single skin bolt on wing). Various other patches were needed where rust had gone further into the wing. End of sill could then be boxed in with wheel arch. Lots of grinding then on to the other side... thats rustier..!! Mick

The Corgi model (silver striped one on Left) was of the earlier 944cc 1000 Coupe...same basic bodyshell but flatter front with no grille & no bonnet vents. The 1200S got these in '67 to go with front mounted radiator. Other models are ..centre a 1200S coupe from 'Nostalgie' series and a 'Norev' 1000 Coupe with open door. Mick

Even rustier this side.!!! Wheel could be seen from driver's seat..!! All cut out now ready to fabricate bottom of door pillar, link it up to new sill and panel in back of wheelarch. Also trial fit of chunk of SIMCA 1000 wing as part of 'jigsaw puzzle' to make up new arch lip. Mick

Brilliant! These cars are such good lookers. I reckon as long as the interior was in good nick I would be chuffed to take a lass out in one of these little blasters, if she didnt like it she would have to bloody walk home FFS. Loving your workshop as well, reminds me a bit of the inside of my brain, particularly this scene:

SIMCAs in bits..!! At least the Rallye 2 is a runner and on the road. Pickup awaits its own 'weldathon' and 1000 shell under cover needs building back into a car. Mick

Progress has stalled again..!!! Too many other car jobs. Engine & box in foreground currently out of my Honda twin cam powered SIMCA 1000 to investigate lack of drive.(see separate post on that) and welding has been diverted to my daily Honda HRV ready for its MoT. It which has serious rust at rear ends of sills thanks to plastic covers. Next job on 1200S is replacing steering box, idler etc. with lower maintenance, more direct rack & pinion as fitted to SIMCA 1000's and 1200S Coupe '69 onwards...I have all the bits from various SIMCas we've scrapped in the past plus NOS balljoints etc. Mick
