These simca engines run anticlockwise? How strong are the gearboxes? (apparantly the box development was assited by porsche?) The Simca 1000 was a Dante Giacosa design ( Fiat's design genius). But instead of using it themself it became a Simca. Fiat and Simca had strong ties at the time ( the leters in FIAT and SIMCA mean pretty much the same in their respective languages). And the Simca5 was a license built Fiat Topolino, for example. From what I understand, the reason for the reverse rotation of the Fiat 850 and the Simca 1000 was to offset the engine in the engine bay, giving more space for the rear mounted radiator. The offset was in the transmission itself. The Porsche involvement in the gearboxes may have been no more than the use of the Porsche patented Synchro's.

yeoddynz The SIMCA 1000 gearboxes were always advertised as 'Porsche licence' in the brochures. I've run 40 or more of them over the years, the main problem I've found is losing synchro effect on 2nd gear. The orange 'Youngtimer Trophy' rallye 2 is currently running a standard SIMCA 1000 gearbox as its close ratio one is out for a rebuild. So far it has managed 18 months of abuse on regular trackdays handling 130 bhp. and is still going strong.. When I used a 1590 cc Honda CRX twin cam attached to one of these boxes I managed to strip two pinions. Also, the CROWN wheel and pinions were never a problem on the SIMCA 1000s I raced in the '90s until I fitted a Limited slip diff.
