frikkin Chrysler. Still waiting for the float to turn up so I have't done the carb yet. So it drives like ass. And starts badly. And last time I went out in it it waited until I was on a busy artierial road full of HGVs belting along in the dark and the tipping down rain and the headlights went out. And they are still out. Frightening drive until I got into the street lit areas of town! So this morning I do the "starting voodoo" ritual, normally I then drink my mornign coffee while waiting for it to warm up (which has to be done while keeping your foot working the pedal or it dies). Anyway, I foolishly left my coffee just out of reach but it seemed to be running OK without foot-action so I went to grab my coffee and sure as eggs is eggs as soon as I was at the maximum disatnce form the car it starts stuttering and by the time I've landed back in the driver seat the red lights are on and its died. So if this happens it won;t re-start as its flooded. SO I though, give it a try? Nothing. SO I move the mazda, finish my coffee, go back to the car 7-8 mins later, think "I'll just try it" and it won't start. Now I know a trick to start it when its like this which is to wedge open the auto choke flap and star it with foot to the floor so the carb is wide open all the way through. So I go to pull the bonnet release and it comes off in my hand, pinging little bits of clips all around the drivers footwell. Its cold, its dark I'm still half asleep and I had to take the bus to work this morning. Again. curse word. A curse word car, yesterday

Boo what a crock! Sorry its not working out mate. I can't afford any more maintenance (specially now) and will be paying for my MOT work tomorrow thats bin done (cheap actually)! so i'm anticipating what if's 400 miles back in, the Sapph is just as ever ready as I remembered, not helping me wanting/needing to sell it. as for the MR2 needs a bit doing - to be able to last. Noticed some condensation in the garage so looks like I need to give 'FINISH THAT BLOODY V8 SIERRA' needs some love too oh and a guilty complex for a soggy Cortina every morning.

The headlights should be easy enough. Its either:
bad earth headlight switch fusible link
Many of the main circuits in the car are not on fuses. They have a "fusible link" which is like part of the wiring harness is meade of fuse wire not normal wire. What a friggin stupid design idea but all yank cars are like that up to about the early/mid 1990s!
The lights just went out so I don't think its an earth, although the main beams did come on dim with the dip beams so theres obviously an earth issue up front...
My float apparently should be here today and the switch and fusible links are all in stock so can be here by Friday so a weekend of repairs fun ahead.
And the heater control valve has started leaking...
More money going out...
And it still needs two tyres...

I breathed a sigh of relief after reading that Alistair. I was sure the coffee was going to end up all over that interior leaving strange difficult-to-remove stains. Such is the fun in running old stuff over the winter months. Whats up with the Mazda? Can't that act as a fill in sensible car?

Well, it is all my own fault.
I bought a car I knew had faults, chosing to ignore them or assume they'd not be a problem.
The previous Fifth Avenue I had was dead reliable. You kinda use that as an assumption that they all are, ignoring the fact its 20+ years old and 114K miles and unknown maintenance schedule.
I could have bought a £400 Mk5 Cortina and that would have been the really sensible option.

The Mazda is what I am mostly using at the moment as the Chrysler is sick. However its not "my" car and when Em needs it she takes it, leaving me with Chrysler/public transport.
I recommend Japanses cars, Cortinas and Morris Minors to everybody but never follow my own advice....

Its no co-incidence that our Smart was bought in Novemeber,.. and soon after all the old cars were gone bar one. Although Smart hasn't been without issue, the Datsun got pressed into service when the alarm broke on the Smart.

Sounds normal to me.
Take heart that new cars can be just as unreliable, but they do it in different (and more expensive) ways. If modern cars didn't come with a 2 year warranty, nobody would buy them!
It happens with simple technology too - I have a slow puncture on the bicycle so couldn't ride it this morning. Had to take the motorbike instead ;D

Reliability is the one factor that got me into old Japanese cars. My first Datsun 160J SSS was a revelation after owning lots of Austins and Morrises. It was a rusty old heap but it never ever failed to start or broke down.
Still you got to pay to play and I don't just me money. My javelin, in the brief time it was on the road, was an utterly unreliable pain in the ass but I can tolerate it because it's a cool motor.

It is for these reasons that I have just got rid of my Golf and bought a late Escort. Auto chokes are a complete ball-ache on old cars generally (and Capris and golfs in particular) and I got fed up with constantly patching up my daily driver to keep it running as it meant the Mini never got touched.

Here's a pic take a few days ago. Scored these fat slot mags off the 'bay and had to do a quick trial fit even though it was dark ;D I'm about to pull the engine and rebuild it then in the spring do the body and repaint it. It's a 390 which has been heavily breathed on albiet with mostly period late 70's tuning gear. The car is all set up for drag racing with a ladder bar'd Ford 9" rear, strange shafts and a locker. It's pretty hardcore to drive as their's no power steering, no brake servo and it's a manual with a mega heavy clutch. It's both awesome and rubbish at the same time. I love it ;D

Did it come from up York area or was that another red early body Javelin with a 390 and 9" rear?
If you ever want to sell let me know as I always fancied one of these.
