Chav car.......always have been always will be. Like the others said I disagree. Sierras in general suffer a lot of chavvyness and bangerness, in the ease of their ownership. But the underpinnings of a serious car in a sleek wrapper that can be brought right upto date, or gracefully left in the 90's, not always a chav car, but I reckon difficult to go slow and behave in! The MK2 is only retro in peoples eyes, but the loss of RWD in normal cars and the mass appeal of J cars, is speeding up the retroification of the humble Sierra. I wanna do a discreet VIP looker now, that would be TEH win FO sho! www.fasterfords.dk/sapphire/4wd_brochure/Sapphire%204x4%20Cosworth%2010.jpgnever meant to be lairy at all EDIT: THe Escort is a Sierra shortened into a Escort shell! probs feels smaller and lighter though

It is like driving a Sierra.............. I don't like any post 1962 Fords BUT was impressed with the Escort. I like driving sierras they are enjoyable rwd cars , and they all have cracked dashes and average bulid quality (but I still love em). But if you like your ford to be vintage I can accept that ;D I guess its the same way I could not own any vauxhall after a mk2 astra (mk3 are just rancid)!

The sierra felt like a Sierra with a Cosworth engine shoved in where as the Escort felt like a well put together car, I don't like any post 1962 Fords BUT was impressed with the Escort. Ironically the Escort Cosworth pretty much shares it's underpinnings with the late Saphires.

The RS500s were modified to aleviate some of this and if you find a Pic of the 909 Group A trailing arms, they are Cast Aluminium and have a Totally different (and adjustable) mounting arrangement.. Nine'O's FTW. I have the 909 rear bushes (body to arms) in the trailing arms of my old XR4x4. I believe there still are a lot of nine-o parts floating around.

Ironically the Escort Cosworth pretty much shares it's underpinnings with the late Saphires. well it is! the escort cosworth is (don't quote me on it) 4" longer than the mk5 escort (so it aint really an escort anyway) plus the engine, suspension and gear box are just robbed from the 4x4 saff with only the drive train and floor pan being shortened it fit. It a bit of a part bin special! A saff in drag possibly? Sorry I am being a post whore!

Integrale is in a different league.......proper car! How do you work that out then? Cos it isn't a Ford ;D No, seriously, drive one and you'll see what i mean. They are fragile and they do rust, but as soon as you drive off in it you'll fall for it. The sierra just feels like an 80's reps car with a quick engine. I know i'm curse word a lot of people off with these 'anti ford' comments but I just don't like em, sorry.

When was the last time anyone spotted a Sierra Wagon? I remember Max Power featuring one in the mid-nineties in Volvo T5 yellow and V6 running gear... *n seen 2 in last 2 weeks... i both love 2 door brute, particualrly love sapph's for their understated class, and loathe ordinary sierra's which just appear at diffing contests everywhere getting abused...

Nice debate! I've driven well over 100K in a variety of Sierras and never encountered any of these "build quality" problems. In fact I've only had four major failures - one cylinder head (DOHC so it doesn't count ;D) and three diffs (lost a shim after breaking the first, so the next two didn't last long! ) In fact out of ten Sierras, only two have had any rust worth mentioning! Fact is, the Sapphire Cosworth was only ever meant to be a fast reps car and something for Ford to win rallies with - in a modified form. By the standards of 1987 - 1992 they did that very, very well! It's not even like they were that expensive in the scheme of things. Horses for courses though, and I'm a little biased!

Similarly I have done 23K+ in My Modest 1.8, although its not as nippy as a smaller car, I have grown to love the comfort on motorways, and its aerodynamics, and although its basically standard and the slowest engine it handles ok and IS the best car I have ever owned&driven, and lived with, making me Biased but very happy that its been so good to me and you get used to the size. So sling in a Cossie engine, LSD, lowered springs uprated shocks, sports recaro's and i'd be pretty happy

Love 'em. Although badly modded/knackered ones are easy to find, if you look hard enough there's still some minters out there. Should you ever come across one of these minters, buy it, keep it standard and watch the value rocket.

The curse word image of it is part of the appeal to me and in a way i'd prefer to have a minty, tuned to the hilt 4dr 2WD than a 3door or a 4x4.
Damnit I have to update my 'to own' list now.

Yeah they've definately shaken the 'council estate chic' for me, I reckon they're easily retro and NOW is the time to buy one, they are going to rocket in price any second now!

you can sort out the rear camber issues with a £3 pack of washers.
standard or just brought up to 280bhp the cossie is a sweet and useable car, anything over that and they get expensive to run and look after, mind you, they can make over 800bhp and wih that sort of power will crack 200mph so not bad for a taxi!!
I'm not massively keen on the saph body style, the 3 door is what does it for me as its way lighter and looks more sporty.
4x4 versions can be hussled along MUCH faster than you would think once you have mastered the right way to drive em (if its understeering apply MORE power and buy new pants!) to get the best out of the system, also what hasnt been mentioned yet is the fact that they are huge fun to drive as the system is full time 4x4 but its 66% rear biased so once you got a car with enough oomph to overcome the grip when you want to, you have what is in effect a rwd car with extra grip when required.
also you CAN get cossie performance for well under a grand if you want, just buy a V6 XR4x4 and drop the 24 valve granny cossie engine in, different power delivery, but still oodles of fun for curse word all money.
