I'm interested in giving this drifting malarkey a bash (eventually) Obviously a resonably pokey RWD motor is a must, but what about events? Is there a national body that organises stuff? Or is it more like a collection of local groups hiring a bit of land and sticking some cones out?

Me too, my V8 seems quite well set up for it - good stiff springs, shocking tyres, a V8, rear drive and it's quite well balanced too.
Just need to think about rear axle options, t'otherwise me drifts will be short and sharp with the standard open diff.

I'm getting the vibe for this too. Doubt I'll be able to afford to take part myself next year but it'd be nice to get along to an event and smell the rubber!

www.driftuk.co.uk. they put on the practice days aswell as the smaller level competition, eurodrift. trampdrift is good for learning about cheap mods, but its not a good place to take inspirtation from. as they tend to waste a lot of time trying to be "tramp" something like a 2.0 sierra, 2.0 carlton. e30, senator, all good cheap choices. its really best to just start with a standard car and book yourself into a practice day, they do do driftskool aswell but I'm not convinced its actually worth it, better value for money to just do a practice day and loads of helpful people there who will sit in the car with you and give you tips. once you got the vague idea, you need to start looking at diffs, as really i think thats about the most important bit for not annoying yourself, open diffs are not really advised as you will progress slowly, standard lsd's are usually curse word but good enough for learning, welded diffs are where its at, cheap and simple and 100% lock 100% of the time,. fancy aftermarket lsd's are the top stuff but not really needed unless you are at the very top of the game as the price outweighs the benefits unless you are really up there. suspension, well bodyroll sucks so eventually get rid of that, lower the car and uprate the dampers.. bucket seat and harness help hold you in place well, but i actually prefer drifting totally standard cars like 5 series bmw's. theres nothing stopping you trying to hire out abit of land and having a play yourself, there is also the much fun street drifting, which will eventually lead to some sort of hassle whether it be police related or crashing into a kerb, i mean what do you pay your road tax for afterall, its your road use it;) but i don't advice you to learn on the road, some people do and have done it successfully, but i find it far too stressful worrying about police and lamposts and othercars and cant relax, and everyone drives better when they are relaxed. anyway that should help you along to getting started. its really a pretty simple hobby to get involved in. anymore questions and i'd be happy to answer them, andim sure captainsideways would be aswell seeing as he drifts in the top level in the uk

Great stuff RWNick and benzboy! excellent mini guide there. I too am feeling the urge, I realise theres a lot of interest at the moment in this but i'd like to have a few shots, if not to just improve my RWD handling skillzors and have a bloody good laugh! Are there special beginner days? I'd hate to be out there with all the pro's etc, imagine it would be like the whole ice skating experience! ;D I'm not bad at need for speed underground, does that count? ;D On the list, along with track day!

Or you could just do like they do round our way.... chuck some diesel across a roundabout, then drive your uninsured sierra or 200SX round and round on the diesel, whilst dressed up like an advert for burberry.
So some bikers / drivers may crash and die, but at least you're having fun, innit.
tw@ts.

Got a suitable vehicle....three, in fact! Anyone WANT a suitable vehicle? My old GLSi - not perfect, MEGA solid, I think it's still up for sale, can find out.... £300-ish! On the FSOC forum ATM. I was going to buy it back, but the 3-door had to be bought!

Thanks for the info! It isn't something I'm gonna be able to do any time soon, but once I get some cash together it looks like a laugh. Drifting on public roads isn't cool IMO, I'd much rather do it properly, or at least on a private bit of land. It'd be a hoot to have a blast drifting my Benzo, but I think it lacks enough power and I care a bit too much about it... when the time comes I'll look for a suitably retro(ish) RWD clunker to tw@t about in... I like the idea of an e34 Bimmer drift tool

yeh the chucking diesel on a roundabout thing is just gay, i know someone who crashed their car because of that, said the roundabout was so greasy that even letting the clutch out at idle in 1st would cause the wheels to spin.
track drifting is definately where its at, you can play to your hearts content in a safe environment no worries and can explore your car. once you have been to a few practice days you will already notice that you have a whole lot more car control, I'm not saying drifting is the pinnacle of car control or anything but it certainly helps for those moments in a rwd car when the back end gets away.
beginners are always welcome at practice days, unless they advertise it as a non beginner practice day, but thats very rare tbh. ive done a little bit of instruction at a couple of practice days, and a lot of beginners seem to worry about what people will think and worry they will look stupid and out of their depth, but everyone starts somewhere. I'm not good by any stretch of the imagination there will always will be people better and always someone worse, but it should all be about having fun.

I saw something a while back with Tiff Needell drifting a 1000cc Morris Minor IIRC. Simple start, as much fun. And as said above..... Everyone starts somewhere.

trampdrift is good for learning about cheap mods, but its not a good place to take inspirtation from. as they tend to waste a lot of time trying to be "tramp" Rargh, I throw poo at my car so it's more tramp! Seriously though, that ain't true lol. I'm sure the fat controller would smack you up with his boulder-fsts if he heard that. Other than that, good words sir. I'd say that even if you weren't planning on getting heavily into drifting, a DriftUK practice day or alike will teach you so much. In my opinion, anyone who has a RWD car and likes to give it some boot, will deffinately benefit alot from a practice day .

supertramp, thats mike who me and topi refer to as the fat controller.
you don't even need a powerful rwd car to start, start in something lowpowered and it wont be as easy straight away but your driving skill will increase more so, as you learn to drive with what you have and not depend on power. I'm a firm believer in that too.

Yeah it's on fo sunday bwoyee. Oh and whatcha mean I'm gay!? All I do is drive my car, drift it when I can, fix it when it breaks, and occasionally find something to put on it. curse word trying to be tramp, I'm just trying to have a car that gets me to work, and gets me on the rack. Whatever you mean, I'm still keeping a tally of deadarms to dish out for all the peanut etc comments.
