When did the BMW TDi first appear? You could always transplant a modern efficient TDi into an older oil burner or even petrol car. The Pug 2.5TDi was a popular swap into hot rods and the like - even seen them in yank pickups! L reg I beleive. 318 td are a bit too slow. 325 and 525 td are not bad tds loads better. Fairly quick and can be chipped upto 180bhp. same engine used in omegas (I had one briefly) and P36 range rover TD6`s. Are expensive if they go wrong (fuel pump especialy). I have said it a few times before but I plan to make a cortina daily driver using a pug HDi 110 engine at some point. (probably in about ten years time). Would work out a damn sight cheaper to use a ford diesel engine though, and the old sierra engine could be tuned to 110bhp (well thats what Westfiled had in there Weasel anyway)

The VM turbo diesels in those are not the most reliable engines in the world. The NA diesels in pre defender 90`s and 110`s are a more reliable but very slow. There are plenty of converted diesels kicking around in Land and range rovers though from 200/300 tdi`s to Daihatsus and even chevy 6.2V8`s which have plenty of torque but not much power. You want one of these in your Range-Rover...... 126bhp, 201lb/ft of torque...about the same as a V8, you lose the sound, but gain the sound of a tractor puller.....heeheehee Brian

Daihatsu Charade Turbo Diesel, ridiculously good mpg, as part of an advertising campaign they took one for a drive around the circumference of the UK and averaged 103mpg which was a record! It actually still held that record until just 2 or 3 years ago!! Probably get it for nearly curse word all if you can find one.

i would go for a pug 205. my n/a 1.5 106 oil burner has proved to be quite trust-worthy and usefull - towed my six series home with it and pulled up some trees with it!!! its just very slow.

So long as it has a short upswepped side exit and the magic power screw on the pump has been opened up to the max so it blows black soot all over inoccent pedestrians anything will do me.

So long as it has a short upswepped side exit and the magic power screw on the pump has been opened up to the max so it blows black soot all over inoccent pedestrians anything will do me. ;D I'm liking that! Rangey's been lifted 2", that and the oversize tyres put the exhaust at just under nose height for cyclists....as the lycra-clad kno*head who squeezed up the inside of me at some traffic lights found out after he knocked my window and accused me of being a (and I quote) 'Road Bully'.....I waited until he'd got some speed up, then blasted past him flat in first, flat-footed the turbo by shifting up into 3rd which caused the biggest cloud of (hopefully) carcinogenic black soot to come swirling out of both tail-pipes. I'd like to say i saw him in my mirrors choking, but there was so much black smoke I couldn't actually see him..... Brian
