Peugeot 504 and 505......my Dad has an '86 505 GTDT, looks like a shed, sounds like a bag of spanners in a spin dryer, pulls like a train....almost 300k and still going strong.

Seconded on the Pug 505.
I really want to own a 505 at some point. Probably not a diesel, though.

Old + diesel invariably = a world of slow noisey tedium.
Buy a Mk3 XR3. Buy a Mk6 Escort TD.
Add together for silly torque steering economy.
I kid you not.

Maestro TD loads of torque and not too bad, well compared with other equivalents.
SWB MK3 transit or a 504 pickup are both great fun diesel commercials.
Peugeot diesels are probably one of the best retro dieselsto live with on a day to day basis

The older Ford diesels are supposed to be right dogs! Pogweasels mk3 XR3 idea sounds interesting though. As for the diesel SD1, that's just wrong you pervert!

The VM turbo diesels in those are not the most reliable engines in the world. The NA diesels in pre defender 90`s and 110`s are a more reliable but very slow. There are plenty of converted diesels kicking around in Land and range rovers though from 200/300 tdi`s to Daihatsus and even chevy 6.2V8`s which have plenty of torque but not much power.

The volvo 240 diesel is called a d6. Straight six 88hp from peugeot i think (or was it renault?) Smells like a old bus. Strong motors though

Everyone forgetting Mercedes? Does it have to be a TDI as they did a range of 200, 250 and 300 diesels in the W122 W123 W124 and S class (W112? ) bodies. When did the BMW TDi first appear? You could always transplant a modern efficient TDi into an older oil burner or even petrol car. The Pug 2.5TDi was a popular swap into hot rods and the like - even seen them in yank pickups!

From what i can find the 240 did come with a Diesel model with a VW lump. Must be poor quality wobbly children's play pony poo rare tho because people on the volvo owners club forums seem to have never seen one. The 700 range deffo came with one, always had a soft spot for the 740 saloon

Audi 100 could be had with a diseasel. 5 cyl jobbie I think. Nice. I missed a chance to buy a 1983 Audi 80 diesel earlier this year for a mere £195! I bought a curse word Maestro instead. Still kicking myself for that one.

Nowt wrong with those maestro diesels, apart from the noise and rust!
The Volvo 240 diesel does exist and it does have a VW diesel lump in non-turbo flovour, however they were not sold in the UK so you would need to look on teh c0nt1nent to find one.
