LOL @ BC! don't know much about Range Rover diesels TBH, just remember my dad waffling on about perkins diesel or summat when he got his 3 (plus drop down) door early Rangey diesel! Personally I'd run a mile from all Diesels, lack of knowledge scares me and lack of speed doesnt inspire. although i'm coming around to the idea of a BX TD.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Yes, the Austin Cambridge/Morris Oxford could be had with an oil burner. Very slow! It was a modified B series engine. The Standard Vanguard was the pioneer in the UK I think.
Citroen BX turbo diesels are great (but then I love Citroens!) but the Pug 405 deserves some credit too. They share the floor pan and the Pug doesn't have the leaky hydraulics to worry about. A nicely styled car too.

Pug 205 diesels are indestructible. After the nuclear holocaust all that will survive are cockroaches, Nokia 3210s, Peugeot 205 Diesels, Mercs and Volvos. The turbo'd ones are supposed to be a little more fragile. My N/A 1.8 had done over a quarter of a million miles and still started on the button. It did have a big hole in the roof which made winter driving a bit of a damp affair though. Surprisingly nippy, cos it weighed as much as a packet of snouts...
Slightly random suggestion... but what about a TATA pick-up?! Mercedes 190-based chassis (so I've heard) and a Peugeot diesel engine. Winner! ;D

Everyone forgetting Mercedes? Does it have to be a TDI as they did a range of 200, 250 and 300 diesels in the W122 W123 W124 and S class (W112? ) bodies. I like MB diesels, but they are ball-achingly slow! a W123 300D would be the one to go for I think, as they're supposed to be less sloth-like. Not too sure what diesels they did in the later W124 and W126 or when they got around to fitting turdblowers...

Pug/Cit Turbo Diesels can blow head gaskets but changing the coolant every two years should avoid this.
I think a W123 300D is the way to go for Retro-diesel-cool. Five cylinder and auto gearbox!

TATA = L05eR!!!
All the handling, power, performance and poise of a 40 year old land rover, but with none of the off road ability and zero chance of getting spares for them.
YA RLY!

Hmmm... well I did say it was a random suggestion! ;D I'll not suggest a Mahindra Jeep either then... A bit more of a boring idea, but what about a Pug 405? Or a 605... Glass's guide says you can pick up a good 605 for £1.69p with full ticket. Beware though, as they're mini-cab fodder...

Definately make sure there's a turbo involved, otherwise things will be slow... I bought a BX 1.7 TZD off eBay last year, needing a cheapo diesel motor quickly. Didn't see it 'til I went to collect it... Also, I won a five way bidding war in the last minute of the auction! All the Fords/Vauxhalls looked like they had had a hard life, so I avoided. Pugs were another possiblity, but the suspension won me over ;D It's been a great car, only time it let me down it needed a set of glow plugs Won't exactly set the world on fire speed-wise, but it's no slouch if you floor it, and you have the satisfaction of leaving a trail of black smoke behind you

Ah, that soot reminds me of my Pug 306 Dturbo with a slightly larger version of that engine. Used to love giving it the boot when being tailgated! Eat soot!!
That had 90bhp and was quite nippy. I think they are easily tuneable too.

Ive got a BX too, 1.7tzd, 90bhp and pretty nippy, the car only weights about 900kg! As for the puego 1.9 non diesel, dog slow, and my sister managed to crack both the block and head on one! I really fancy a peugeot CX turbo dizwol, either that or a triumph 2500 with the engine and drive train out of a 525 tds J

From what I can find the 240 did come with a Diesel model with a VW lump. Must be poor quality wobbly children's play pony poo rare tho because people on the volvo owners club forums seem to have never seen one. The 700 range deffo came with one, always had a soft spot for the 740 saloon i know the 700 range deffinetly came with a VW turbo derv lump as seen in some large VW vans still not sure bout the 240 though lol
