long story I lost all power and now its missing on a cylinder, not blowing smoke, ive changed plugs, air filter, oil +filter, adjusted the points starts fine, strugles to idle, needs mega revs to move and dies in the higher throttle regions just no power at all

HT lead breaking down, stuck valve, broken piston ring, head gasket etc etc.

Pull the new plugs...the one that's caked in unburned fuel is the non-firing one. Put one of the old plugs in, just in case you have a duff new plug, if that makes no difference, then change the leads- after a while they get all carboned up inside, then disturbing them to change the plugs cracks the now-brittle inners...even if they look OK on the outside.
It's a start, I'd bet that it's something simple like that if it was running fine before you started.
Good luck!

oooh ill keep me fingers crossed
although the leads were changed in june
at first i thought piston rings/head gasget but the ammount of smoke it puffs out seems normal

Sounds like an ignition problem to me, does it just happen when it's cold or when it's warmed up?
I noticed my Audi running on three cylinders recently in the mornings, it needs alot of gas to get it going up the hill at the end of my road. It's the HT leads breaking down in my case, they are rock hard. The cold engine requires a stronger spark to ignite the fuel and the leads cannot cope with it until it warms up a bit.
I tested the ignition system at work using the ignition analyser. It showed burn times, minimum, peak and mean Kv values and even told me that one of my plug gaps was a bit tight, which it was, kewl. Out of the range of the home user unfortunately but fun to use.

spark plugs are all fine, gaps are unchanged and the electrode has turned a milky white

Was it running OK before you done the work, or did you do the work to try and cure the fault? Either way, compression test is your next job IMO.

You'll need a compression tester which screws into the spark plug hole. With the accelerater fully depressed and the ignition coil disconnected crank the engine for a few seconds and record the reading. Repeat on the other 3 cylinders and compare.

without seeing the car difficult to say with any degree of accuracy but it sounds a bit like fuel delivery to me. Generally with ignition problems you get a very violent loss of power and then it comes back again off load. Also back fireing is a good sign of an ignition problem.
Poor idle, dieing out under revs, check your carb for dirt. Pull out the jets and give them a blast through. Milky white electrodes can be a sign of a very weak mixture.

I see what you're saying about fuel delivery TCS but I doubt if that would cause the engine to miss on 1 cylinder.

hmmm true didnt clock the miss-fire part lol compression test defo the way to go if its definately a miss on just 1 cylinder. Do u know which it is samyboy? Have u pulled off 1 lead at a time whilst its running to see which 1 has no effect?

not tryed that.........wont shock me will it, did that with a moped once as it wouldnt stop and I got alot of voltage up my arm bigtime how much for a compression tester and where from fueling might be a thing to check, could the weak mixture be because I put a performance filter on? too much air getting in? oh yes and ive realised the condensor is well overdue a change, if i can get to the dam thing

quite possible, does it have a manual choke? if so does it run better with it on a little bit? As for getting a shock, you should be fine as long as you use some insulated pliers. Compression testers range from anything like £20 to £150 dependant on which make you buy. Mine is a MAC kit which cost me about £120. Ok seeing as i use it fairly frequently but maybe a bity expensive if u only need yo use it once.

yeah manual choke will idle with some choke as that increases the revs but makes little difference when in motion

i would say best thing to do is pull off the leads as mentioned before. If they all make it run worse then chances are it will be a fuelling issue. clean out your jets and go from there. With choke on it makes it run richer so would back up a theory of a blocked idle jet but still not enough for it when its under load.

how do i get the jets out, carb off job? as ive got a webber carb sitting on a shelf in the garage, a good excuse to put it on, while its off and out the way i should be able to get at the condensor too unfortunatly my garage has plasterboard in it so cant get the car under cover

Lots of compession testers on ebay, about £10 so not too steep either, hope it gets fixed soon mate.
