Check the Valve clearances first ;D Its a Fiesta........I bet they are out, exhaust clearances closed up and its holding a valve off the seat ;D Always start with the simple stuff....... valve clearances are included in that ;D

I had this problem with the MG about a month ago, after much head scratching it turned out to be the Coil degrading. If you left the car for 10 or 20 mins it would start and run for a bit thien do the same.
Could be a similar issue.

Hope you get it sorted soon mate, at least it's a Fiesta so it won't cost too much to sort regardless! Had exactly this trouble with my 2nd-generation Civic. Look away now if you don't like the thought of ripping the cylinder head off. A bloody great chunk was missing out of one of the exhaust valves. My own fault, 500 miles a week on unleaded.... Still sorted for around £100 though!

If the plugs are white it sounds like its running lean, as has already been said. Therefore I would check for leaks around the carb/inlet manifold area, and any vacuum hoses you may have kicking round there. Again it is simple to rule out, and free too. Hope this helps ya mate.

Sounds most like ignition to me - most common problem on older cars.
Always make sure plugs, leads, points, condensor and coil are in tiptop condition. Just because plugs are new doesn't mean they work, leccy igniton modules die regularly too because they seem to be made with water soluble transistors.

well went down the garage for a condensor sitting in traffic for ages (poor thing) then i ended up in the wrong lane.........still got away nippy and infront of the other car the nightmare condensor change wasnt to bad after all (bonnet off) and wrap your arms round the engine...........not while its still hot abyway that made no difference...........sounds amazing with no bonnet when i went round the block to check coil should be okay its off the other fiesta and its only a year or 2 old, although the other connection (not the wire coming from the dizzy) is rather mucky going to have a fiddle with the points maybe try another filter if i have no luck after that I'm going to move onto the fuel side of things, trouble is its my daily driver so i cant go wripping evrything off all at once as knowing me ill put it all back and it wont work at all ill keep that in mind, give me an excuse to trundle over not seen you in a while wish me luck people

not gonna repeat all the good advice given so far, however my old 1.1 fiesta (mk1 of course) snapped the inside of the coil ht lead. you could get it to run ok if you rocked the engine about or moved the lead around with some pliers. sidestepping the cluth had busted the lower engine mount causing an 8 month old lead to snap. just what happened to me, worth a try!

ill try switching it then
had a go at checking the valves and gave up as my feeler gauge didnt have the right size feelers
made a good clean conection on the coil
and had a samyboy guestimation points re-adjust
idles alot better but still down on power

well i asked our plumber (he races a mk1 RS2000 8) ) he thought fuel filter so i tryed to dismantle the fuel pump but gave up and went and bought some points............FOOOOOOOK me what a sound fires up no bother irratic idle and poits rattling away (un adjusted) then get a huuuuge backfire and black smoke (probs clearin all the soot out the exhaust from its sluggish behavior lately took it round the block, still think theres some fueling issue it like has a rev limiter when you hit 2500rpm getting really worried about the gasget though as i had to take a coolant pipe off to gain access to the fuel pump, so had to top the rad up, engine was running and it cut out then took ages to start

Are you sure that the ignition timing is ok? 9 times out of 10, poor running is ignition rather than fuel related.

Ignition timing can be altered very easily though albeit not spot on unless you have a strobe. I had a mkII Fiesta and adjusted the timing just by turning the dizzy until it ran better - I was having to use the choke to keep it running! It was a bodge but I did a few thousand miles with it like that. Just remember that the HT leads carry a lot of electrickery so wear gloves if you are going to try and move it with the engine running. It's down the back of the engine if I remember rightly so may be better to turn it a bit then start the engine. One way should make it better and the other should make it even worse! Experiment and if it still runs like a bag of spanners, then get to a garage.

I reckon you'd be better off spending a little bit of dough on a timing light and having a go yourself. It can make a huge difference to an engine in terms of running or running nicely.

was anyone getting into/out of the taxi at the time? LOL etc.
I can recommend a strobe light too, i wish I had more cars that I could use mine on! Plus you can shine them in peoples eyes in the hope of setting off an eplieptic fit.

seen them on ebay now and then, how easy is it to use setup and understand whats going on? Yeah, pretty simple really. Just did a quick search on Ebay for "timing light" and there's 40 there at the moment. This is similar-ish to the one I have. The crocodile clips go on the battery to provide power and the red block clips over the No1 HT lead. This makes the strobe flash at the same time as No 1 plug. Then you point it at the relevant place on your engine (front crank pulley on mine but then the engines aren't mounted sideways so I'm not sure wher it is on yours but someone could say I'm sure) and press the "trigger" button to get the strobe flashing. Some (all? - mine does) have rev counters on so you can make sure you're checking the engine at the right speed and see how the timing changes with increased RPM. There'll be a series of marks and a notch that becomes "stationary" under the effect of the strobe and as you turn the dizzy it will move gradually one way or the other. Just line it up with the mark that represents however many degrees before top dead centre (BTDC) that the timing should be set at. Job done. Pehaps someone with experience of Fiesta engines can point you in the direction of the specifics.
