I got a letter from the estate agents saying someone had complained about me working on the car out front. So I've been living here for 2 years working on my own cars and bikes out the front a couple of times a week and no-one has said a word. As soon as I start work and it's out there and doesn't move for a week I get a complaint. More to the point why can't they say it to my face, it's not as if they don't all know who I am. Bloody two-faced miserable old codgers. I think I'm going to start deliberately upsetting them now with pulsejets and loud engines.
Maybe I'm just in a bad mood about the Pop. Been lying on my backside in the rain all afternoon trying to get the tank off the pop, sheared a bolt which I really could have done with keeping and found it wasn't the fuel line that was blocked it was the union in the tank but pulled the tube out and now it's clear. The tank is full of curse word so I'll be putting on a filter. Also got soaked this morning running about chasing parts. The good news was the float was also completely scaled up so now I've freed that the petrol gauge will work.
It's cost me loads more than I was expecting this damn thing, oh well it's nearly there now. Better crack into it hard tomorrow and get it done or there will be another complaint.

I hate it when neighbours behave like that..... As someone who has to use the gutter as a workshop, fortunately so far I've managed to avoid annoying my neighbours - infact, I've got to know a few of them through being outside messing around with the car!
Obviously depends on what needs doing, but a good modus operandi is to make it look as though you're just doing very minor stuff, like giving it a thorough clean inside & out, just topping the oil / coolant etc. maybe checking something underneath, even if you take all day doing it. Although a PITA, that way, it shouldn't be too difficult to deflect any pathetic complaints, as I cannot see how any of the stuff I described above can be in breach of any local regs / property covenants etc

Yes i get snide and sarcastic remarks from neighbours about how I'm always 'messing' with cars/vehicles and "Wouldn't it make more sense to get a nice little new 'supermini' for £99 down etc..etc.." ... ...but, who's door do you think they come knocking on when their car has a problem or fails to start?

I have great neighbours! ;D Next door one side the old biddy has an ancient mini squirrelled away and always takes an interest. Next door t'other side the fella restores tanks for fun! Just over the road is a fella with a 6/110 Wolseley and a Mk2 Zodiac. And within 100 yards lives a Mk1 Capri, Jag XJ6 Ser2, MG Magnette + Triumph Toledo.... all at different addresses. ;D

I know what you mean johhnie, at the end of the day i really don't think there is anything they can do legally as long as you are not causing a public nusance so tell them to bosh off. My neighbours are like this, old bastids. Complain about me working on the viva, complain about me not working on the viva, complain when it's sitting there, curse word when i'm loading it on the trailer this morning, and still moaning tonight about the trailer being where the viva used to be.
FFS some people need to play on the motorway.

How come the letter came from the estate agents? Unless someone or you are selling a house I suppose.
Our neighbours moan about everything too. They moaned about our dog barking for an hour one day and me revving my Mini, my reply, theres a building site opposite that is making a hell of a lot more noise than the dog and me. Go moan at them. All the neighbours don't talk to us now because I upset one because they have all lived there their whole lives and don't like it becuase were new and young. F*ck them.

my neighbours are pretty cool I guess. they keep themselves to themselves. except one guy who quite knowledgeable and has helped me out on occasion.
however none of them know how to park. impjimbo can back me up on this. getting to my house is like driving an autotest.

chin up old bean...its for the good of the environment, the community and jolly old blighty... and frankly fook em...if they've got there head so far up there colostomy bag plugged rectums then what the heck do they know? They'll all be dead soon anyway. Only complaint I got was when i returned from a vigourous testing session on the drag motored bike and a lday up the street asked if I 'was going to be doing that everyday' to which i replied 'yes, it is my only mode of transport, is your curse word little dog ever gonna stop barking?' hang in there tough guy.

I wouldnt have thought there`d be anything anyone can do, I`ve had grief in the past, you know "oh are you cleaning it up ready for sale, then?" "No, its gonna be here a while it needs a new box, I`m just cleaning so I don't feel quite as helpless about the situation" I love the way their faces deflate when you tell them things like that.
Thing is, a good few doors down from me is a residence containing a Nova GSi in bits, a Calibra and Tigra the same and four or five Max Power specials, some in the driveway, some spilling out into the street, some under tarps, some on bricks you get the picture, and all day and night there is revving of engines, loud test runs up and down the street, (sometimes with manifold unbolted by the sound of it) messing about on quads and minimotos, and a massive dog chained up and barking. I don't live near enough to them to know whether it would be that much of a nuisance or not, but I do know people nearby have been complaining for years and nothing has been done, so I wouldnt have thought a bit of fettling on an old Pop would be the stuff of court appearances.
You`d think they`d be glad to see a historic motor like that kicking about, project or not. I thought everyone liked REALLY old cars even if not everyone "gets" the `70s stuff.

Had one the other day while I was trying to get a friend's pajero started (not retro I know, but still relevant!). Middle aged mum stops alongside (blocking the entire road) and starts gobbing off about how it is taking up "their" parking space, and that they are going to report it to the police because it is dumped and when is it going to be moved because there's nowhere else to park? So I replied something along the lines of: It's not dumped, it just hasn't been used for 8 days. It won't be moving today because the starter has given up. It's taxed, MOT'd and insured, so has as much right to be parked here as anyone else. And it was the RESIDENTS of this road that asked to have the commuters stopped from parking here, so it's your own stupid fault that there is only 4 spaces on the entire road, as the rest is double yellow lines. You were offered zoned parking, but you were all too cheap to pay for it! Shut her up for a while anyway
