autohausdolby in da house: I wonder why it starts when you prime the carbs?
Could be......
You flood the motor with fuel, crank it over and just when you let go of the key it fires up if it's a problem with no spark when the starter is turning, it just need one spark in a over fueled combustion chamber to start, if you don't prime it might not get enough fuel to do this, it's a bit like dieseling......
DP says: I don't say it's so but it could be.....

did it have points originally, if so it might have a ballast resistor in the ignition circuit and 9 volts at the coil live, when cranking theres am other wire from the starter solenoid which boosts the current to 12volts at the coil for a better spark when cranking. ive had probs with the solenoid switching in the past on a fiesta when i converted it to electronic ignition, oh and you must bypass the balast resistor on the fez so its all 12v, hope it helps

It did - I've changed it to transistor ignition using a coil from a type 25 van, the polo electronic dizzy and a TCI module that came with the engine. I was under the impression that the only differences would be contained in the coil and if I swapped that I'd be OK

Been interesting reading this thread Seems a Rolling Road session will see the Pizzle with a little more fizzle

I'd always RR a decent setup anyway, cos it'll pay for itself!

Not sorted yet! I'm down this weekend (so ghetto). I've had to hire a wibblepoo car cus the Polo isn't done and I don't want to do that many miles in the van.

I know the value of a rolling road session, I spend a very long time trying to persuade reluctant customers of the same thing when they've had Webers put on a car.

The thot plickens still further - the cam timing is out by at least one notch on the belt, and the engine cannot be turned over by hand past TDC on number one. I've got a little tired off arseing around with it, and I am not really confident that it is the 3f (GT) engine it was sold as (the cam profile looks like a normal one to me) so I'm going to swap it for a known good spare that I have. I got as far as disconnecting most of the engine tonight, and cleaning the new engine. Tomorrow I'll get service parts for the new engine and try and get time to change them over. Engine number 3:

Oh, and the water pump which tensions the belt is seized in place on the engine that's in the car, plus the allen bolts that hold the bottom pulley on are rounded, so I can't correct the cam timing even if I wanted to.

the kind of 'that doesn't seem right little problem escalating like we all dread ....... Best of luck with the 3rd motor fella. Any more feedback regarding starting cars with bike carbs from Bogg Bros?

;D Cheers dude! It's the only thing keeping me at it - well, plus the whole voyage of discovery thing with the bike carbs I should have got another Polo coming down to the 'shop tonight so I can pov some parts off it, most importantly the gear linkage as my car is short to the tune of one.

Great reading autohausdolby - it's this very thread that's persuaded me to run bike carbs on the KR...strange how one man's miss fortune is another mans gain What are your thoughts about Bogg Brothers...service / costs / results?

;D It's better reading it than it is doing it They took forever to do the work cus they're always busy - the manifold looks lovely and fits well enough but it was a bit of a pain discovering I had to buy special nuts to put it on (the small diameter big thread ones you use for bug exhausts at a quid each ) The float chambers leaked when I got them back cus the o rings that seal them hadn't been replaced as well but that's not the end of the world. Delivery was prompt and the price (about £250) was alright.

erm...why do you have to fit the manifold with special nuts??
