You might be running too much fuel pressure then, 2-3psi is plenty on most bike carbs I was thinking that... I've got a reg you can borrow if you want dude? |

I've tried it with the reg, with the fuel pressure turned right down and I got it to start a couple of times but it failed to start about 10! Grrrrr. What a fugger - I so haven't got enough time to be messing about trying to get it running properly  |

Stupid question: The comments about the carbs needing to be level... Is that really true? Bike engines lean a HECK of a lot round corners, waaay more than a car, and they don't seem to cut out/run badly?

Stupid question: The comments about the carbs needing to be level... Is that really true? Bike engines lean a HECK of a lot round corners, waaay more than a car, and they don't seem to cut out/run badly? I thought that - what about if you're parked on a hill? I was kind of assuming the Bogg Bros. would know what angle to mount them at and I made a point of mentioning it in the covering letter I sent with the carbs as I was concerned about it then. |

I asked the question for ya at the dutch polo forum where some people also are running bike carbs.. some things came up:
The first thought is no fuel, but then you wouldn't be able to drive it.. or did you only try it for a couple of meters??
second is, you are running a AAV ignition, try a MH ignition, the one which only has a small ignition only "computer" widely used in golf jetta 1300's.
Use the choke, and unleash the CO screws 2 "rounds" (or how do you say that)

ahhh CBR1000 well the carbs wouldnt be as steep as on your set-up but they certainly wouldnt be sitting flat, so i don't really see any issue with the angle.

Me and Graeme went for a blast around the block in it The ignition system isn't linked into the ECU if that's what you mean? It is the "simple" TCI system that just consists of the dizzy, tci module and coil. I'm running a TCI coil from a Type 25 van. The ECU that normally accompanies the engine is long gone Is the thread in English? I'd be interested in having a look if you've got a link. |

Bike engines lean a HECK of a lot round corners, waaay more than a car, and they don't seem to cut out/run badly? no its B.S. bike carbs can run at pretyy much any angle, due to sealed float chambers. that has nothing to do with the not starting. have you got the choke connected like others said?? if you havent taken this advise your wasting your time, because bike carbs have no pump jets, so WILL NOT start an engine without a choke. I'm running these on my starlet  They are Keihin carbs from a Honda CBR 900RR. The chokes are around 39mm. They are excellent carbs but only NRP were interested in selling me bits for them. 120 jets as standard, it may be a little lean for my 1300... a guy i know is running 140, Which seem spot-on for a spicy 1600 cossflow escort. you'll need to know Are they dyno jetted? The main needle will have a circlip which can fit in one of four settings altering the mixture. Lower the circlip, lifting the needle, richer the mixture. And Vice-versa. This can be done diy with small washers acting as shims!!! The bottom tubing is fuel feed in. The top tubing is off to the vacuum system. I am not sure whether this is a breather system or a vacuum servo. I suspect it is like an evaporative breather. Ring NRP with the code stamped underneath the intake trumpets or under the outlet chokes. They will sell you jets to suit! Mine is: 88 AA KO (plus some japanese symbols). my carbs are prob the best option you can get for 1300-1700 engines, but R1 carbs are exellent too. R6 carbs will look like a good option, but stay away from them! they wount idle below 1500rpm on a car engine for some reason. Here they are, my exact carbs (exploded diag of components): 216.37.204.206/Mcmart/Honda_O...=13&A=111&B=20and exploded diag of larger assembley: 216.37.204.206/Mcmart/Honda_O...=13&A=111&B=19When trying to jet it, ONLY the main jet needs to be changed! the needle travels down from the diaphram which controls it's 'plunge' deep plunge= lean/ shallow plunge= rich. It passes vertically down into the emulsion tube (hex head inside the float bowl on the bottom of the carbs) the main jet screws into the bottom of the emulsion tube. The emulsion tubes are not called emulsion tubes in bike speak, but you will know what I mean. By having the needle sitting higher up to start with, the mixture is enrichened. But this is a crude act and will not compensate for a re-jet. It may enhance a jet though! A Dyno-jet kit (is an after-market tuning item that) allows the needle to be sat at 4 separate depths and held in by a circlip. Dyno jet kits cost around £150! Think of the standard needle as a T shape, but with a tapered tail (the vertical bit). The tapered tail sits in the emulsion tube and fuel is sucked upwards from the float bowl over the tapered tail of the T needle. Placing a shim or washer under it's shoulders will raise the T upwards, thus allowing more fuel to flow hope this helps alot, because it took a long time to write it lol |

I've got the choke connected - I've just thought though I should check whether it operates in the same direction as the original car one though  I've tried starting with and without it though and it doesn't make any difference |

The thot plickens - I've swapped the bike carbs for a Solex that was on the car when it was a 1 litre and it displayed exactly the same symptoms! I'll report back when I've done some more research.

ah spark prob when cranking?
try running a direct live to the coil on cranking, might have a voltage drop when its cranking

Entirely possible - the fact that the ignition system is cobbled together from bits of other cars doesn't inspire confidence I'm going to strip the carb off again tonight, change the starter motor and put the bike carbs back on, then have a good look a the ignition system. |

AHA !!! My old polo did this !!! bloody thing, It would fire eventually, there was no spark when the starter was turning, if I remeber rightly it was a knackered alternator and a selection of useless earths.....

That's interesting - I strongly suspect that we have an electrical issue then. I wonder why it starts when you prime the carbs? Maybe a weak spark when cranking?
