By the way, massive thanks to Fancy Plates who did these ultra fast through their website. Unbelievably good services. I recommend highly. www.fancyplates.com/I've used them many times - the plates don't suffer from black fade to grey either unlike a lot of suppliers The engine sounds awesome and sweet as well - well done soon you'll be able to drive it

Reverse lights - sounds like good old “phantom continuity “. When tested with a meter, all seems perfect but as soon as you add the 3 or 4 Amps of loading then it fails to perform.
Try using a 12V test lamp - preferably using a 21W bulb - and go probing with that. Ignition on, in reverse, and start probing until you have lost the 12V. Based on your tests though, it sounds like a high resistance switch. Only needs to have gained a couple of ohms (about the same as an ignition coil) and you won’t get any lights.
You might be able to get a couple of LED bulbs to light as they’re much lower current but I suspect the actual switch.

In the end I bridged the terminals at the switch and the lights came on so the switch was the problem. Took it out but it’s totally knackered so bought a new one.

Continued with the car again today. Many hours spent but without obviously achieving much. I fitted the new condenser for the coil. I'm still not 100% what it does or even if I need it, but the car had one originally so its going back on. Its a generic BL/Rover/Triumph item, so I modified the terminals slightly and then fitted it to the coil and bodywork. I fitted the number plates. Funny how they instantly make the car look more finished. I used plenty of Butyl sealer on the rear number plate screws so the boot stays water proof. While I had the sealer out I refitted the roof beacon and also sealed that up, so no leaky headlining. Then I got on with the wiring. The Police loom is still installed along with its fuse box and three relays. They sit next to the original Rover relay panel up behind the passenger glove box. Pretty dark in there so I had my work light on. I fitted the switch panel properly this time and routed all the wiring through plastic conduit to protect it from any sharp edges. Then I started to terminate the wires t the Police loom and start making some simple checks of what was going on. Its all pretty simple other than at the moment I don't have a switched ignition feed to run to the switches for the siren and roof beacon relays. The Police and Stop lights are fed direct through the switch with no relays. Not sure I like that so might wire it up differently.

Unless running points, it shouldn’t be needed, BUT I wonder if it was a Police spec addition to reduce RF interference with the radios? The closer one got to the edge of a reception area, the more susceptible to any other electrical interference i5 would become. Not a good idea for a Lancashre car!

Hmmm maybe. There was one on the alternator too?

They all have them I think, my 6 cylinder has one on the coil Jim and I was told it was for the radio interference.

Is it a suppressor? Used to have them on my Metros to stop radio interference. Condenser always went inside the dizzy.

Some condensers live on the outside and do the same job as the ones that live on the inside. See Ducellier for reference.

Started on the car at 8am this morning and didn't leave till 4pm with a brief stop for lunch. Despite all that time things haven't really progressed massively. Its so time consuming wiring stuff up and terminating everything properly. I fitted the washer bottle and made sure the pumps were working, connected to the correct wires and feeding the correct washer tubes with working one way valves. I was using one of my favourite tools, a power probe. You connect it across a battery and then poke it at stuff to energise it. Real handy for general poking at electrics. I also made a little test light with a 12v 21W bulb and some small fly leads. Testing washer motor and one way valves Then I continued wiring up all the Police gear. There are only traces of the old wiring and some of it really doesn't make sense to me. The red light on the dash is fed from the additional fuse box and would have sent power to the two marine lights that some of the Lancashire cars had fitted on the front corners of the roof. This car doesn't have them fitted, but all the wiring is there for them. I am using the 4 Lucas switches that were fitted on cars made after 84 (or so I'm told). The air horns and beacon are switched by relay, the Police and Stop lights are fed direct through the switches. I used the red switch to switch power on to the two switches for the relays. Probably not correct but it works and I like it. I haven't fitted the front sign yet. I'm hoping to mount it magnetically so I can remove it when I'm on the road. Short video of it all working. Didn't put horn on as they are so loud!

This is incredible restoration, even as a civilian Rover restoration it's outstanding but bringing it back to service condition....superb. Regarding the rear Police box on the tailgate, is it heavy and does that mean the tailgate has upgraded struts to compensate for it?

Just using standard struts, not even vitesse ones.
