I did a tiny bit more welding yesterday on the roof, but my reactive helmet wasn't working, so I gave up pretty quick as I was making a mess.
I did some grinding of welds, but then the gearbox drive of the grinder broke, so I had to bin that too!
Frustrating.
Ive just bought a DA sander (electric) so I can bare metal the floors. Quite looking forward to it turning up so I can have a play and see how effective it is.

Spent most of today with my trusty angle grinder and wire wheel stripping underseal. If I go careful, I can flick the rubber stuff off with out it melting and smearing. Plus, in some areas I have only been going down to the rover etch primer so it has some protection from flash rusting. Long, laborious and tiring. Towards the end of the day all the wire fell out of my brush, most of it stuck into me and my overalls which was nice. So I had break and did some welding instead. I finished welding the new boot floor in properly and the leading edges of the front wing.

nice job, i hate using wire brush's on angle grinders last time i used one i ended up with a wire sticking out of my lip.

Did a bit more of the crappy underseal removal. Its pretty much all gone now.

i've yet to find a wire cup that doesnt eventually fling needles at you like critters. deliberately swapped manufacturers too :/ part of me thinks the rpms are too high for a grinder, despite it being made for a grinder
knotted wheel are more robust, but nowhere as flexible so pretty useless if you have nooks to get into. irritating !

Ive found the same. The Silverline ones are the worst but they are cheap. I did buy some twisted knot ones but they seemed to smear the rubber underseal more than the plain wire which kind of flicks it a bit more. The twisted knot ones are great if you want to grind rust out and really put some pressure on it!

I spent sunday on the car. I started with some welding, which i still find surprisingly enjoyable. I think its something about the smell of burning metal. I had the car upside down and welded some plates in to close of the sunroof drain holes at the lower rear quarters. I also seam welded where the rear quarter meets the boot floor. It'll be stronger and easier to keep from rusting. Then i turned my attention to the closing panel at the leading edge of the rear quarter and rear seat area. I had already pre drilled the holes and welded in one side so it took a matter of seconds to weld in. After that i got back on with the cleaning of the underside. The new boot floor was covered in protective wax. Thsi had been applied i would guess back in the 80's as it was now rock solid. I tried rubbing it off with degreaser.... no joy, it wouldnt budge. So i tried petrol.....again fail. So i had to grind it off with the wire brush. I am really really fed up of flying needles now! The gearbox in my grinder is also on the way out from all the punishment, its making lots of noise and gets real hot. Then i started on the engine bay. Here i used the DA sander, wire brush on the drill etc. More thankless messy noisy work. Funtimes.

The gearbox in my grinder is also on the way out from all the punishment, its making lots of noise and gets real hot. There's not much to a grinder in terms of "gearbox". What it needs is a quick clean of the internals (rag for the old grease and compressed air for the dust in the motor) and then a lick of fresh grease and maybe three new bearings. Keep up the good work!

I cheated, jumped from p1 to p26, obviously a painstaking proper resto going on. I'm sure that it will keep you busy for years to come. I hope the fruit of your labours is pretty special!

Some of the materials for painting the under side have arrived. I'm going with Jotun 87 epoxy followed by seam sealer and then U-Pol Gravitex stone chip. Ive set myself the ultra ambitious target of finishing the car by August 2017. Wish me luck!!!
