The only way to learn is by doing!
Those fog lights - were they wired up to flash, as rear wig-wags, before lightbars were common?
Also, unobrow, IIRC you have/ had a TVP Omega?

I've got to say this is has to be one of the best restos ever, I'm in awe of the work undertaken, and to restore an icon too is just fantastic, I remember being pulled over so many times in the bexleyheath area in various mk1 escorts for doing stupid things! Back then bexleyheath station sd1s were registered with puv or suv registrations if I remember rightly? These were an awesome sight at full pelt blues and twos sounding, at the time the local plod also ran metros I have a picture of my 1600e cortina with a jam sandwich metro behind it, the local police really got the metros flying too! Bit of a hijack of a good write up of a nice bit work...While reantiquating myself with a bookmarked thread, the above quote stood out. I also had a 1600e as a first car in the mid 80's while starting my time with Thames Water at Crossness. Gold BGY 822H or something near that. A Series Two with a webasto roof. Lived with my Grandparents in Belvedere Road Bexleyheath ( to far from the parents in Westkingsdown to commute on 1st year apprenticship wages.....). I to, had a lot of time spent chewing the fat with the local police discussing my "enthusiastic" driving parked in front of a orange stripped car. It would be a nice photo shoot to see similar cars back at the top of the Broadway or Dartford one way, or the spine road in Erith. Shooters Hill, Blackheath etc etc. Hijack over. Outstanding stuff and providence here. Nice.

This thread is just great more pics as you progress please! That's some memory! You may well be right. The met and some other forces had quite a few 2600's rather than v8's particularly series 1 cars. I think most series 2 police sd1's were v8's.. I'm still saving for a compressor and planning to get some time off work so I can get some more progress with this. Jobs suck.

I would hazard a guess that the extra rear fog lights were either a steady burn, or more likely a simultaneous flash rather than wig-wag. I'm basing that assumption on the fact that virtually no forces were using the wig-wag style of flash then, apart from Hampshire.
Yes, I did used to own OV02 YKH, one of the ex-Thames Valley Police 3.2 V6 Omega's. A pretty good car I must say. I sold it, and my ex-MOD Pan-European (in Paramedic livery) to fund the purchase of my current 1986 GMP Capri, D443 KVM
Right, where's Jim with his updates and pics............getting a bit desperate here with withdrawal symptons!!!!

Well this is going to be a bit of an anti-climax for anyone who was looking forward to a progress update. I was hoping to spend 3 solid days on the car over the Christmas period, but sadly that has not happened. All i managed was to do was clear a load of curse word off it, and buy a new bare door from Rimmerbros. Ive been held up by issues with the driftcar. Its in the way, and no longer mobile. I want to get the gearbox repaired in that first before carrying on with the Police car. The good news is that i have been saving, and my pot for the respray is a bit healthier. I'm starting to wonder how to proceed with the car. Plan A was to fit the doors and door skins, then put the car back on the spit, turn it over and clean off the underside, then etch prime, seam seal and stone chip myself. Now I'm thinking maybe i should get it media blasted and epoxy primered by a professional firm. Still thinking about it, and what it will all cost.

For all the aggro and manhours in this car, get the best job you can for protection; you will only regret it if you don't.

Ive had this week off work, and spent most of my time putting the gearbox back in the drift car. With that done (and that was a proper ball ache) Ive been doing a bit on the Police car. The first job was to clear all the rubbish off it and reinstate it onto the car spit. My plan is to clean up all the floor ready to paint and stonechip it. My new compressor broke, and I don't know whats wrong with it, so I'm without air tools I also unearthed my Nissan Silvia which has also been massively neglected. It started first time though, as always. Rover up in the air on 2 trolley jacks and the engine crane, axles off again! One small problem was trying to remove the offside rear door. It was jammed solid, and no manipulation of the latch did any good. So out with the grinder, followed by some chisel action. The door skin was scrap, but the frame was ok, so I may still salvage it. Ta Da! Underside at easy angle to work on. I flipped the car completely and stripped off some of the old BL seam sealer, then dribbled Hydrate 80 rust killer into all the seams.

Great to see an update. It looks so good underneath - i guess it must be rewarding from this point onwards as the whole thing is rock solid and any further improvements will may it look prettier! Silvia looks clean as well - my brother imported his around 12 months back, and despite the fact it's 20 years old, it's literally like new underneath.

S14 silvias and 200sx's are great. Mines a genuine Kuro Black Silvia Navan edition. It still has Japanese bridge pass tokens in the windows. Ive had it since 2008. It was fairly rusty around the rear when I got it but now its 100% rust free. Its about 300 bhp and doesn't weigh a lot so pretty quick so I added R33 Skyline GTR brembo's front and rear. I use it for trackdays periodically. I doubt ill ever sell that one. Looks good after a wash.
