Late Carlton! Can't give 'em away! Or I agree, a nice late Granada is equally cheap and easily available, loads at auction. Were the bug-eyed Scorpios RWD too? Indeedy! ;D if your buying it with a view to transplanting the engine into something else, don't buy a bug eye one, they have really complicated wiring including a PATS system and the auto box is hooked up to the ecu, which causes problems when you stick it on a manual gearbox, they have traction control instead of a LSD which is one of the things you can sell on when you break the car up after taking the engine out.

As it says above, what are the cheapest rwd cars availible, pics would be good, specially cars where engine transplants frm other models are easy, any rwd hatchbcks are my personal faves! pics of them modded are good too! cheers guys Out of interest what's making you want a rwd? If it's for going sideways with then choose carefully.

The frogeye Ford Scorpios are quite cheap and fully loaded with electric everything, leather and air con. Trouble is the insurance is soooooo high on them.
Austin A30 and A35 is quite a cheap car if you're prepared to go that old. Shares a lot of stuff with other BL cars like Minis and Metros which is handy for getting spares.

Bug eye Granadas are FWD. Here are my suggestions. don't laugh, I will explain. I ran a Sherpa combi for several years. My dad still runs the pickup he bought new in 1986. Why a RWD Sherpa or Transit? Nuke proof mechanicals. Unbelievably simple to work on. Comfortable to drive. Cheap bits. Cheap vehicles to buy, for that matter. Carry or tow _ANYTHING_ Fun to drive. And surprisingly quick too when they arent loaded. I challenge you to try a twisty B road flat out in a Transit and not have a grin on your face! Oh, also you look down on Range Rover drivers and trucks let you out.

Bug eye Granadas are FWD. No they aren't! I'm pretty sure they're RWD as they're only a sheetmetal-redesign of the earlier model, most of the mechanicals aside from the new engines are carried over aren't they? Wikipedia reckons they're RWD, but has been known to be wrong on almost everything else

:)Bug eyed Scorpio's are definately RWD. RWD Skodas are still fairly cheap, and although not that fast they are enormous fun! [Not that I'm biased or anything! ]

After a while all big ugly Fords coalesce into one

No even the bugeyed one (which isn't ugly but i know the one you mean!) was RWD. As I said, it was just a bodywork revamp of the previous model.
Back to the original topic..... VW 1303S beetles? Cheap as anything right now, RWD, not masses of power but a laugh in the wet and simple enough to work on.

Yes bug eyed Scorpios are the same underneath as the earlier Granada Scorpios. They are also absolutely amazing cars in every way. Funniest thing is that fault wise they are like giant Escorts - same clunking bushes, dodgy airflow meters, rusty back arches, so don't ever be put off a cheap one. (unless it actually is f**cked!)

So if they arent FWD how come I had a colleague at a previous work who had an FWD one then? If I'd known it was something unusual I'd have taken pictures to prove it but as far as I was concerned it was just another boring modern large Ford at the time so not of interest to me. Is this some kinda Taunus/Cortina thing again?

Are you absolutely sure? I was under the bonnet of a 2.9 12v Scorpio Ultima yesterday, and the engine, the same as the one in the XR4X4, was definately mounted longitudinally! If you are positive about the FWD one the only thing I can think is that perhaps it was a 2.0 example (I`ve only ever come across 6cyl ones) which possibly for some strange reason used a Mondeo chassis - a bit like with the Escort Cosworth using the Sierra one - but as far as I know this wasnt the case and I couldnt really imagine it being the case, although I hope your right theres nothing better than a weird Ford!

Pretty sure there were no one offs or test mules that were fwd either. Any idea what year the car was.
