Well my daily driver just died...
Its a 1999 daewoo matiz, and its bloody awful
anyway its pouring loads and i mean loads of white smoke out.
Ive decided the only was is either give up or put another engine in it... standard one.
Anyway that got me thinking.... as i saw the slightly larger daewoo on ebay with a vaux red top in it.
Wonder if there are any engines that could be squeezed in for a laugh?
suggestions!

IS it an 850cc?? What is the engine based on? Daihatsu or is it Daewoo's own??
If its a Daihatsu lump you could prolly replace it with a 660cc Turbo out of a Mira in or possibly a charade GtTI Engine in.

Its 798cc though

I think they're based on the Suzuki Alto/Fronte, so it's worth looking for what people have done to them.
A bike engine seems like a good idea though!

daewoos of all shapes and sizes kill head gaskets. FCUK knows why but they all seem to do it. As they are basically vauxhall based then something GM shaped must bolt in easily enough.

As they are basically vauxhall based then something GM shaped must bolt in easily enough. it curse word water everywhere, from what seemed to be from the head as it was above the line of the head/block mating level. Anyway took the head off and it turned out to be some rubber gasket/seal they're all rubber! which had cooked itself and melted on the plastic inlet. Anyway changed that and the head gasket, ran it for abit and then one morning suddenly dead been playing with it the past few days not having a clue about electric motors/engines anyway ive got it running but loads of white smoke. I thought it cant be he head gasket, could be a cracked head i thougth though. Its getting alot of pressure in the header tank, engine wants to stop with the cap on and pours and i mean POURS out slightly off pure white smoke.... however it runs better without the cap but theres still pleanty of smoke from the exhaust. I don't know if i fancy changing the engine for a standard one, as I'm sick of it, if i put another engine in it then it will get sold. But if something abit fun could be put in id be more than up for a laugh for abit.

I'm fancying a mk3 supra for everyday though, don't know if that is classed as retro.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that
1. I like Matizesszzeizzz and think they have a lot of potential - good styling house roots and a design that looks like it's got a bit of effort behind it
2. They qualify for our ethos here in the same way that VIP style Altos do
3. They need work to make them good.
Based on the above, I think some sort of cooking engine, possibly bike derived, is a great idea.
However, knowing it's your daily makes me think it might be better to just bosh a scrapyard engine in it or bin it off. Secondhand ones go for relatively small amounts now anyway.

I once had the privilage to drive a Mk1 Matiz demo from Daewoo just before they collapsed into GM. I've never felt less safe going around a roundabout, but that's all part of the challenge - make it go, handle and look good and you'll be a hero

I love the Matiz! Only car I owned new. 796cc triple which Tickford had a hand in but I don't know the heritage. Always wanted to turbo one but there is hardly any room in the engine bay!
The handling is attrocious though. Understeer city although that could just be due to cheapo Korean tyres.
Three cylinder engines sound fantastic. Deffo need to find a way to cram a turbo triple in, fit some nice chunky rubber and give it some racing stripes!
I hated the facelifted version and now they've re-done it a bit more and it's lost even more charm.
