you may have caught the odd glimpse of my prfect hot rod that I built on my drive at the tender age of 20. I never really finished it. it was powered by a bmw m10 318i engine, backed up by a 5 speed e21 box (for a speedo drive), cortina front clip, capri rear. very dangerous becuase it weighed about nothing, wooden floor with the seats bolted to that and no seat belts. had 100 out of it, it was scary. also changed lanes by itself on the a14 in crosswinds becuase of the high CoG. brakes were lethally good, mgb master cylinder with e23 7 series remote servo, it once nearly tore the front end off in an emergency stop I sold it because I couldn't face stripping it a rebuilding it the way I should have built it in the first place never mind eh! heres a couple of pics while I scan some more in back in a tick......

picked it up as a pair in 2000. sold the other to a mate, who proceed to goad me into stupid ideas as he boasted about the efi pinto he was fitting into his. I was going to fit a crossflow, locost front suspension, type 9 gearbox and an escort rear end. oh how it got out of hand..... I sold it to a guy from norfolk, who painted it snot green with black wheels he sold it becasue it wasn't big enough for his family, then got a cadilac, but apparently that wasn't big enough either? ?? here is some biuld pics, I don't have that many of it finished not long after I bought it first attempt at mocking the front end in place, unfortunatley the thief who sold it to me had ploughed the donor car into the wall at arena, which he boasted about when I went back and complained! fitting up the rear end. I moved the spring perches inboard to fit inside the chassis rails rear wings are a very complicated shape to band, hence the strips. it tapered 4.5 inches at the front to 3.5 inch band in the rear, cool and subtle

you know I said it was an mgb master cylinder? don't think it was looking at it and thats the 318i pedal box, cut and shut with shorter pedal arms and inverted. bizzare propshaft, made from a bmw (the front end), capri (the back), and a volvo 740 centre bearing. 740's have a sliding centre bearing, meaning you don't have to have a sliding tailshaft they're also the same diameter as a capri too. lovely home painted brackets, mmmmmm, green! I was young, OK? final front end all painted and nice. you should be able to see the 3rd chassis leg in the pic, becuase the main chassis leg was notched to hell to fit the cortina rack looked like this under the bonnet when first dropped in the hole was just awaiting a screen frame at this point. incidentally my spare windscreen frame has just gone to sweden after a sale on ebay. might have some nice finished shots, but you'll have to wait

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

cortina's suspension was pretty light for what it is, its all pressed steel, not too different from some cars today. locost would have been narrower and fit inside the chassis better. I was a tit back then..... last shot of it, taken on felixstowe promenade at the first nasc nats to be held at the suffolk show ground, I sold it the next year. this car is the reason I love retro's, they're much easier to get a fix on where your going, and they don't get you pulled as much either. I have promised my self to not build another hot rod until i have a workshop. thats expensive, so I'll stick with the retro stuff hope you enjoy it more than I did

Wow B&D, quite a major project at such a tender age! You must have learned absolutely heaps doing it though. There will be another rod in my future too but I agree with you on the not-until-I-have-a-garage bit!

apart from the rim choice, thats great. i like the not so common use of a bmw power plant. not the sort of thing you'd expect a 20 year old to be driving. i was cruising about in a '76 manta b when i was 20, seems like so long ago now, oh thats right, it was. ;D i too also have a rod build on my to do list. but i cant see it ever happening now.

apart from the rim choice, thats great. yeah, teh rims suck a bit I like s2 turdblowa wheels, but they're not right on there. I was young and foolish, thats a good enough excuse. theres a few bmw implants going on at the moment, most notably a mk2 zephyr with the same engine I used in the prefect, but with a slush box m10's are great little engines, 115bhp out of the box for a 1.8i. wires up with 4 wires, if only I knew that then! I had the entire e30 loom in it. I'm more likely to build a custom in the future rather than a rod, you can have your fill of acceleration, speed and handling. its all inconsequential when looking cool is where its at. I don't half speak some bollards don't I? ;D
