Plumbed in the radiator and heater on the pop yesterday and fired it up under its own power for the first time. Things started badly when I put screen wash in the rad instead of antifreeze so had to drop the lot and start again. The fan is close to the top rad hose but clear and boy it moves a lot of air! Decided to take it for its first drive round the carpark but things aren't looking so good. There's a terrible shudder from the clutch which bounces through the drivetrain making that joint clonk like hell. Feels like the engine is jumping about so I need to check the mounts a bit more closely, I expect if they are shagged it's not going to help things. Then after about 10 minutes the engine died and wouldn't start again. It can be a couple of things, the condensor is the one that was on the car so that could have died, the battery is completely knackered but still spins the engine fine because it's a 6 volt motor but the coil might not be getting enough voltage to make a spark, plus the points might have closed up which is unlikely. I put two gallons in so I guess some oik might have nicked my petrol, or a bit of curse word might have worked its way up from the tank and blocked it. Ah happy days on old cars huh? MOT is on Friday which is looking increasingly unlikely now Jon

I don't think I need to use Pop engine mounts if they need replacing, there's like a bar across the front of the engine and two rubber doinks that sit between it and the chassis. I think I could use a pair of rubber cotton reels instead, it's just a matter of finding them the right size.
As for the dodgy joint I'm not sure if it's in the u/j behind the gearbox or the diff. Difficult to check yourself but I think I can do it in gear lying under the car.

She'll be ready - have faith fella.
Best of luck with the drivetrain - it'll be something not greased for decades or something!
I'd definitely go with electrics for not running - something'll have given up after all that time. After all the work put in - these last little bits will be a breeze........ get back out there ;D ;D ;D

Yeah I'm not sure if the old condensor was rated at 6-volts so that could have gone.
Blech, means I'm going to have to 'check' the petrol is coming up the pipes. Only one way to do that...

Have you got the latest PC mag ? There's a whole section on converting from 6v to 12v - maybe a clue in that article? Might be all stuff you know obviously...
Drop me your email if you want it scanning and bunging over...
Rob
PS: I had no joy getting in touch with Dougal about the tyres (I see you found another anyway) Mine and his laziness coupled together to make a farce frankly.

I think I'm there on the old conversion, I had a skim over the article and there isn't anything I missed. It's just the condensor I left on so I expect it's what caused the engine to stop. The starter is fine on 12V as long as you don't cane it too much.

Hope you manage to get it sorted Jon. Would it be worth giving the carb a quick check over in case it is gunk in the jets?

Yeah I already stripped and cleaned it. If anything fuelwise it'll be crud in the pump. It has probably sucked up a load of scale out the tank or lines.

Managed to find the fuel problems. I pulled the tank off and everything inside was scaled up. The sender unit was seized up with gunk and the fuel pipe was blocked up with goo. Cleared that so it can now suck all the bits up from the bottom of the tank and decided to put a filter on. Just as well because it's blocked solid already and the engine conked out. I've got one of those washable ones on its way so I can empty the bits out until the tank is clear. I've updated the Readers Rides thread too: retrorides.proboards86.com/index.cgi?board=readersrides&action=display&thread=1161123558
