Now then, I'm as happy as the next one to chop the odd coil or two off but not when it comes to pigtail springs (and I personally don't like the idea of heating a cut spring and fashioning a new pigtail).
So, I'm looking for vehicles that use pigtail springs as standard so that I can acquire a couple and see how it works as a lowering solution for my '85 Grand Marquis Sedan. I'm thinking I'm probably looking at commercials.....?

Most cars have the ends slightly pigtailed, and are fine fitted with, for example coilover springs. It all depends on the suspension design.
If it has the springs on top of the axle as quite a lot of 80's yanks i'd cut the stock ones at the top and attach them properly to the axle, or get some proper lowering springs.

If you need fairly heavy duty ones, VW t3/t4/T5 vans use them.
The t5 springs are mega long and mega stiff but the t3 and t4 rear springs are more or less the same as each other, and not out of the way for the back of a heavy yank. The lowered ones for sale cheap on ebay are softer than stock but don't cost a lot.
"Coilover" kits for T4s are available for about £180 a set for 4 dampers and a pair of rear springs and adjusters. The dampers go for £80-£100 and the springs and adjusters are handy, but mega stiff.

I changed the tyres on the rear so got in there with a tape - the pigtail I.D is 80mm and the spring is @14" long when uncompressed. Standard lb on the rear is 145 so I figure I'll be in for some guess work concerning shorter length vs. damping rate. Some measurements would be great That would be no fun

What about getting some adapters machined that would allow non pigtail springs to be used ?

Was over helping a mate with his truck and he made a call to one of his buddies, who also suggested Vauxhall. Time to get to the breakers with the tape measure.
