The thing about the trade is that they tend to take a very practical and pragmatic approach to motoring. Most mechanics I have known (except those I know because they are also petrolheads) advocate the approach of buying a modern car which has done most of its early depreciation, is easy to work on and easy to get bits over the counter at Partco. They don't like cars which involve having to remember how to ballance carbs, deal with rusted up components, phone about trying to find obsolete stock parts, or are just generally "different" to what they are used to. And just like builders, anyone who's ever done work before them was a cowboy! The older the car the more likely it is to have seen a few bodges in the past and that can really tip them over the edge! Also I knew a guy reckoned Citroens were the best cars inthe world ever. IIRC he had done his apprenticeship at a Citroen dealer before going out on his own... I'm with Darren... Leave 'em to it. If you ever need a hint on how to refit a Vectra clutch or something, useful guys to talk to. Otherwise keep it Retro...

I reckon we should all sign up and give them hell. Anyone up for it? No - it'll accomplish nothing. Rise above it, let them have their petty little squabbles. We're better than that. *n

Thanks guys I suppose I was a bit 'unaware' and thought ooh 'car mechanics' they will be interested in keeping cars going / messing with cars etc.. NOT realising they were 'up own ' motor trade (Not that I have anything against majority of motor trade ...realise we've all got to work etc.). I like messing with cars (as we all do on THIS forum) and though I could learn things (as I do on THIS forum). Shame Thanks to everyone with all this

Very nice! Although most will say it's an RA'28' is it actually the slightly earlier RA '25' (Which was Japan home market only ...I think)?

I think they mean crabbing Mat - where the cars wheels or chassis are not aligned correctly so the car, whilst moving in a straight line, has its body pointing at an angle, like \ so - but continuing forward in a straight line. Usually occurs if the suspension takes a heavy knock, distorting its mounts and so on another way of describing it is a car goes down the road looking like a lanky black labrador chasing a duck...lol

I've got some very old issues of Car Mechanics from the 60's and 70's. If they saw what we were doing to our cars now they'd die of fright. The most adventures thing they seemed to do was swap carbs and that was pushing the boundaies. You should see some of the readers tips too, deffinately pre-MOT days!

OK peeps, consider the dogs called off. Appreciate what you said about it potentially dragging this forum down and I hadn`t thought of that. I will say though that the offer was genuine and apologise if anyone was offended by it.

Very nice! Although most will say it's an RA'28' is it actually the slightly earlier RA '25' (Which was Japan home market only ...I think)? Looks like it's got an RA28 bonnet on it though? I was under the impression the RA25's had the TA22 style flat bonnet. Such as this... Best and easiest way to tell of course is by looking at the back lights, RA25's had 5 on either side, whereas the RA28 had 3. Either way, early Celica's are becoming very rare now, they're one of the cars I would absolutely adore to have as a project if A) I could find one and most importantly B) if I had the money to restore one properly. Edit: Apologies for being a trainspotter

Cavmad mate, remember I told you about the Practical classics forum old duffers blaze which was like 'Tom-war' but X(about)10? we all got a bit torched on that one! ;D LOL learnt a few lessons there. Twincam don't let it get ya bud, theres no need. leave em to it, we are not short of the facts and advice if we need it are we. as you say though, pity really as CM mag alike PC mag is pretty good, sad theres unwelcoming squatters on the forum.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Alistairk is absolutely right from my experience, I always feel that other traders and mechanics are probably making derisive comments about me behind my back because of the menagerie I`ve got round the back at work. Even the Capri just provokes comments like "didnt know people still ran these". Everythings always "a pile of junk" and "wants torching".
You`ll be amazed at how little love there is for classic stuff in the trade where you`d think these cars would break up the monotony a bit.
Anyway don't go back on that forum, sounds like they take themselves a little bit too seriously.

I misread that and thought you owned a Renault Meganne. You deserve all the snide comments you get then... LOL.

Do agree with vic from years of experience... only last week my papa (ex mechanic) on topic of 'Modmods' said 'waste of money' (which is sort of true) and 'you just need someting to get from A to B as quick and cheap as possible'. never know when to take him seriously exactly! boring but true for the masses. didnt stop hm fiddling in the past though Wisdom or summat! Only die hard car fan mechanics and traders who still have a deep passion will be open minded with our crazy choices and and some of our naivety. my mechanic friend is pretty patient with me! ;D

Yep (sorry if I'm repeating myself again ), it would appear from all this that I have discovered (painfully ;D) that nowadays some mechanics (not all as Vic for example has an interest ) don't like working on anything old/unusual/interesting/different ...In my 'little world' I thought they would ...I know from my experiance from years of motoring they used too! Strange! ...by the fact they would originally want to be a 'mechanic' in the first place would have led me to believe they are 'into cars'!
