..please! I asked recently about 200sx's conclusion was, great but mainly if ya driftin tracking it, bit OTT for a daily. I need ideally to condense 2 of the fleet into one, so my lateral mind has landed me on a Nissan silvia of the mid to late 80's, like teh one pheonixc had! Now, I'd like the MR2 fun nippy factor, along with a couple of seats and a tail gate. Now lets see RWD - check Not OTT engine wise, good for juice and city jaunts - check - i think Tailgate and 4 seats, and comfyish - looks like Fun - i reckon Reliable - Cheap - seem to be for some reason. So whats the facts? it doesnt seem to be a million miles from a RWD toymota, but loads cheaper. Only thing puts me off from what i currently know is looks, but i'm sure i could pretty one up. What do you all thing good bad idea? Anyone know the PCD too?

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Hehe, I can't help being overcome by my hatred of how they look.
I'd deffinately pick a Toyota over one of these.

For me I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Better than a standard S13, both in handling and brakes. Plenty quick enough as a daily runner and fairly easy to increase power. Generally solid underneath other than front jacking points.
They are cheap because no one seems to want them, which is ideal for buyers not so good for sellers.
The ca18ET engine is as reliable as the ca18DET in the S13 and the main weakness is the bottom end.
Lack of an LSD is not much off a problem as you have to really struggle to unstick them in the dry and in the wet they slide quite well.
For me it was almost as good as my AE86 it just had a little less character overall but when you can buy them for a tenth of the price you cant complain.

Yeah seems bizarre they are still reasonably priced compared. My biggest task would be to avoid wrecked ones thats been drifted raced thrashed etc, family minter would be much better, how about PCD? either way theres tasty rims if its 4x100 or 4x113.4.

Aaah sorry. I thought you were chosing between an S12 and an MR2. But yeah, Corollas are stupidly overpriced, so the S12 is better!

Hmm well I suppose I am really, cant afford a corrola or modded starlet! Love the MR2 but two seats and mini boot are limiting. and if theres only one car sat outside home, I might begin to hate making life hard for myself at times, having said that, I do have If-I-keep-plans for the MR2 and a few guides on tuning!

Silvias 4x 114.3 PCD IIRC There are still quite a few silvias around that havent been abused as they still don't seem to be an obvious choice. They do make a good daily driver comfortable, reliable happily sit at 3 figure speeds on motorways (and B-roads : . Aaah sorry. I thought you were chosing between an S12 and an MR2. But yeah, Corollas are stupidly overpriced, so the S12 is better! If you forget about the price the corolla is better IMO, but you could make one hell of a good S12 for the price of an MOT`ed corolla.

Watch for crusty front arches! Very common problem and they're unavailable as far as I'm aware. Also rear spoilers are rubber/foam and rot but fiberglass replacements are available. Look here www.nissansilvia.co.uk/vbb/

Lets clear something up there is no weakness in the bottom end on silvia or 200sx. Just silly people who buy them don't clean the oil breathers out, then chip them and wind boost up and wonder why it's broke. Standard 200sx s13 crank safe to 350 bhp you'll have run out of money before you get to that stage! Front ends rot like good uns round anti roll bar mounts and look out for knackered rear bushes on trailing arms. More of an to fit than expensive.

The S12 is the often forgotten trooper of the 80's small hatches. The top of the line S12 RS-X vs an AE86, no question I'd have the the S12. Better brakes, engine, suspension, the whole thing really.
Even in the lesser version, the range lineup and the like is better in the S12, the AE8x series does have a reputation of awesomeness for a reason, they are good cars but bang for buck you can't go past the S12 out of the two.

Didn't read the thread.
I've always loved them. I think they look a lot like the trueno. Always quite fancied buying one and putting a 200sk engine in.
