today i came home to find my mum had departed just 10 minutes beforehand, to go collect my 19yr old brother from work. weird, s he uses his scooter. then was told he had to go to the copshop, so i figured he'd been done or summat.
not so, it would appear that whilst my brother earnt his living and paid his taxes to support our important civil services, his scooter was being yobbed and burnt out in the carpark behind his jobspot...
id be mental if it was mine, luckily it wasnt. neithers he, it was a cheap and frankly unroadworthy (until i fixed it) machine but who do these 'people' (used lightly) think they are? why is our society in such a way where this is 'cool'? does anyone remember grafitti or vandalism until 1950? before that we always seemed to be a very British Britain...

This kind of thing sucks. When I first started going out with my fiancee, i had to chase some local kids away from my GTi-R every night. We never got peace cos the alarm was going off every 10mins when they kicked it, rode their bikes into it, lifted their dog onto the bonnet, sat on the bonnet and slid off, etc etc Of course it was never them, even though we could see them from the living room window. I eventually gave in and started parking streets away and walking cos the car was safer. Can't do anything about them either cos when my (then pregnant) fiancee tried to sort things out, she received death threats from the parents and had to move.

I'm so glad we live at the end of a windy 300m private road at the top of a hill. No one can see our house or driveway from the road, which is lucky considering some of the people who used to live around here, most of whom have grown up a bit and moved on to the local Tesco carpark!

Graffiti and vandalism has been going on for centuries. Any perceived increase in occurance is due to a higher population density.

Yes, more and more of the population fits into the official classification of 'dense', therefore they generate more graffiti. Simple!

I don't think we're all going to hell on an express train like the Daily Mail would have you believe. Anyone see the stats published today showing Britains teenages score highest in all the "trouble" indicators of any country in Europe (Including the accession countries). Worst for teen pregnancy, worst for violent offenses, worst for theft, worst for alsohol and drug abuse, etc. Nice.

This has just been posted on another forum, as one of a number of reasons to be positive: "positive things: ... its not against the law to wear a full face balaclava and follow hoodies around (at a safe distance). It is illegal to whip out a big knife and chase them shouting "red rum" but, they don't caught doing stuff so you probably won't get caught either." It has a strange appeal to me ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) I should explain that some little curse word attempted to hit my wife tueday night 'cos she rrefused to sell him and his mates 10 dozen eggs and 10 bags of flour. I was somewhat angry.

tell me about it.
I've had cars damaged and fences/sheds damaged. One of our local residents was given a 5 years ASBO before she and her family were kicked out and a few other young 'uns round here are no bleedin' better. I dislike being a private house owner in a half private half council area now. I hate Britain for what its become but i love it for what it was, lets hope everything goes round in circles, otherwise we are all screwed.

I live on one of the most notorious estates in my area. But there is a proper sense of community here.I don't know of anyone who has had their house broken into, car nicked/vandalized.It seems it must be a case of not shitting in your own back yard though, because every incident reported in the local papers, seems to mention the offenders coming from my estate ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) Might help me as well, seeings my wife is a teacher at the local school, and is very well liked by the local scrotes.

Why is it (or so appears) if little T4wt damages your car he gets let off ... Yet if you catch little T4wt damaging your car and YOU bash him about a bit and then put a Colt 45/M1911A1 against his head and 'cock it'(so that he DOES actuallywet/sh1T himself) it is YOU that spends a night in the cell ...for protecting your own property! ...and he gets let off ...etc, etc ...again! ![>:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/angry.png) F****** twisted country we live in !!! ![>:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/angry.png)

Thought some more about this.
What Penski says is true that if 1 in every 1000 people commits a crime and you increase your town's population from 100,000 to 120,000 you will get more crimes simply because there are more people (thus more criminals). Also there is the arguement that as populations increase the infrastucture and services do not increase at the same rate thus making "competition for resources" more accute and therefor those who are criminally minded will commit more crimes.
Also we have to be aware that recorded crime is falling. Recorded crime is the raw number of crimes committed where as the crime rate is the number of crimes committed per head of population. Therefore as the populatrion is rising the crime rate is also falling, based on recorded figures.
However what appears to be happening is twofold:
1. people are less likely to report crime now than 10 years ago (I have seen figures which support this view)
2. the kinds of crime being committed tend to be low level crime which is not the sort of theing which is regularly reported anyway. Many falling into the broad category of "public order offences".
What really bothers people is not the risk of being murdered or even burgled, but noise from neighbours or people in the street, being given verbal abuse or theatening behaviour, and the constant flow of low level vandalism.
According to a study I partially heard on the radio this week 46% of British people want to move house to get away from "trouble" in their neighbourhood. In Scotland the figure was over 60%. Theres not enough places for people to move to though! LOL.
To keep this vaguely car related:
In the first half of my driving career, from 1987 to about 1995 I had my car broken into twice (within a week!) and another car had about three attempted break ins (Cosmic security locks saved the day!) I do not condone car break ins but I understand the motivation. I have a car staereo, its worth money, someone will steal it. I do not recall any malicious damage to my cars in this period at all.
In the second half of my driving career, from 1996 ro so to now I have had countless aerials snapped off, cars keyed, cars egged, rocks or othewr stuff thrown at them, at least three cars have had people damage them by walking/jumping on the bonnets/roofs, my second Rover (1998 I owned this one) lost three wing mirrors in a month. I had one car broken into and my mobile and a pack of cigarettes stolen from it. Also misc badged nicked off them, tyres let down, kebabs smeared across windscreens, etc.
Mindless stupid stuff.
What p!sses me off more? That someone broke in my Capri and stole the stereo or that some mindles oik has broke my mirrors off - again. The latter does. And I have a greater "fear" of that kind of crime because theres no rationale to it. Theres nothing you can do to stop it really either. To prevent stereo theft you can remove the face plate, fit an allarm, break-proof glass film, not have a stereo in the firsrt place, etc. Nothing stops you car getting keyed. They might gkey your car because its old, because its new, because its shiny, because its ratty, or just because they are walking past it at the time.

Nicely put Alistair.
Another factor with the population size/density I think is anonimity, with less sense of community/'belonging', and not being known even if witnessed.

RAW NERVE! I live in lovely picturesque Suffolk. Very low crime rate, apparently. Except on Saturday I bought my new car.... Parked it at 4pm, by 11pm it had been broken into. (Hence no Readers' Rides thread yet - it's locked in a secret underground lair ATM! ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) ) A few hours later a 20 year old girl was being raped 'round the back of a pub about a mile away. Wednesday night I took my new ride out for an evening "blast" (in inverted commas as it's a 1.6 Pinto, 3-speed auto ;D), only to find I couldn't get home through the police tape.... there had been an armed robbery at the newsagents 200 yards from my house. Tonight I'm off to have a "chat" with someone about their keeping my friend awake all night with loud music. Nice. Pity I can't convince the wife to move abroad. (I would go with her, like). ![](http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b250/jonny-sierra/byrnes.jpg) ^^Been thinking about this car a lot recently...
