Forgive ignorance, but if you were to register this now, would it receive a 12-plate? Or something more age-appropriate?

Lovely! 1981 was a great year to be made in ;-) I love it when motors like this come to light, great car and story. Will be very interested to see how it sells, should do well I reckon.
as an aside, the DVLA being "flummoxed" made me chuckle to myself, they we're "flummoxed" by re-registering my old Volvo under it's own original number plate. I'm surprised this case of brand-new-but-actually-really-old-and-has-never-even-had-a-number-plate didn't make the entire department simply implode in a confused incompetent mess. this in no way intended to be a 'whinge', just made me giggle a bit :-D

I'm not 100% but i think this is the one that was in the TC Harrison dealership at Derby on Pride Park, it would have been about 7 yrs ago if my mind serves me correct. Me and a mate went to have a look at it, it looked bizarrely out of place amongst all the modern stuff but sooooooooooooo much cooler I think it had a price tag of around 8-10k iirc but it was a while ago so don't quote me on that!

I wouldn't register it. By doing that you cede legal ownership to the DVLA Ltd and you become the 'Registered Keeper'. I'd keep it as is, you would be the real owner of a piece of motoring history.

he paid about 2200 for that car 4 or 5 years ago at the peak.
would be interesting to see how much he wants for it now, in a depression

That is unnaturally clean. I'd like to see it put into proper care in a national museum as an historical artefact. Either that or put to the road. ;D I wouldn't register it. By doing that you cede legal ownership to the DVLA Ltd and you become the 'Registered Keeper'. I'd keep it as is, you would be the real owner of a piece of motoring history. *Klaxon Noise* I'm sorry, that answer is incorrect. */Klaxon Noise* The legal owner is the legal owner. If you have a receipt for a car that was written by a person that was entitled to sell the car, you are the legal owner and thus entitled to use, dispose of or sell as you wish. End of. The DVLA don't want to get involved in ownership disputes - which can get notoriously messy (e.g. divorce, theft, bereavement, etc.) - so they restrict themselves to knowledge of the person that uses the thing. The person that's most likely to be driving it, and most likely to be paying the tax, getting speeding tickets, etc. The person that keeps it on the road. They register that person. Hence 'Registered Keeper'.

I can't imagine it being worth much.
It flummoxed them? Well, surely it's easy, it should just be granted a 12 plate if it were to be registered now, since that would literally be in line with the date of first registration.
But the DVLA seem to know less about vehicle licensing than a child, so I suppose I'm not surprised. They won't accept that my car is NOT automatic, for instance.....

Oh, also, I think I remember seeing a 1989 XJS V12 convertible for sale which had never been registered. As I remember it was on eBay and the asking price was £49,995. Needless to say, it was there for a long time, and may still be there.

Trouble with minty delivery miles cars is that as soon as you start using them you destroy the value, which cuts your prospective buyers down to those who want it to trailer around rather than use.
Buyers like that are a rarity for the cheaper end of classic cars.

But surely, if it were registered on a 12 plate, it could never pass MOT due to emissions etc?
Or would it just have to pass SVA?

DVLA issue age related plates all the time, chassis number and its known history will prove its age no probs.

^IIRC, it goes on the date of manufacture of the engine. So it would be fine.
Shouldn't need an IVA - it's still covered by it's original type approval AFAIK.
