it seems AF stuff is getting harder to find. whod have thought this would be difficult to get- at least, i cant find what i want i want a new set of AF sockets. they must be 1/2" drive, wall drive, 6 point NOT 12, the whole reason I'm buying them is i have laods of 12 point ones that tend to round off rusty old nuts so i want 6 point so they don't. i want reasonable branded quality with a warranty. I'm not looking at paying snap on prices. the only set i can turn up anywhere is a fairy mediocre looking sealey 10pc set for £25 quid-ish, unwarrantied, so probably quite breakable. my intial thought was halfords advanced, but they don't off any imperial sockets in 1/2drive. ive looked in machine mart but they're too cheap for what they are, and they don't honour their warranty anyway.(been there, dealt with that). any suggestions?

This set is the only thing I can find that you may not have already seen. I can't vouch for the quality as I've never owned anything made by them, but I think there's a 25 year guarantee, and a couple of their products look suspiciously like Halfords pro (ratchet spanners + torque wrenches in particular). I'm guessing that being a full socket set not just a single rail it's probably way overkill for what you want, as I doubt you need most of it. Still, might give another direction to look anyway. Annoyingly that make don't seem to sell imperial sockets separately.

ideally I'm looking for something between the two- i just need a socket rail, no ratchets and stuff, but id need a bigger range than the 7pc set- ideally 13pc or maybe 11pc. ive just been reading about silverline stuff. everything i know and have experienced in the past says they must be wibblepoo especially with how cheap they are......but they offer a no quibble lifetime warranty on all hand tools, so how bad can they be.....? and at that price, they're nigh on disposable anyway.
thinknig about it, the only thing of theirs ive ever really bought are knotwheels, which are half the price of anyone else yet seem to last just as well..hmmm.

I thought that would be the case.
The silverline stuff seems alright, my old college had several of the 3/8th's version of those sets and they did seem to last well considering they were abused by students who mostly didn't have a clue. The quality didn't feel quite up there with some other makes, but like you say, for that price with a lifetime warranty you really can't complain. I remember thinking the handles were quite comfy too. Don't expect much from the ratchet, but I'm sure you're pretty well sorted for them anyway.

robin, they do look reasonable, but as you say, 125 quid on something i need less than half of is a bit annoying. ideally i was looking at spending 40-50 quid for a rail of sockets. ile have a google about see if i can get em seperatley.

Yeah definitely. I did a quick google and Proxxon only seem to do full sets, or individual metric sockets.
Actually having had another look, I'm not sure that the sets my old college had were those silverline ones, they were similar, but not the same, I think I may be confusing them with a set a friend has, which unfortunately I don't remember being brilliant.

well, ive found a teng set thats perfect, except its 12 point. all their 1/4" and 3/8" sockets are 6 point, up to 17mm or equiv. yet all their 1/2" ones are 12 point down to 10mm or equiv. how stupid.
as you say robin, proxxon not available seperately. curse word.
ive now been on the silverline website, and they do a 7pc 'set' from 3/8 to 3/4" then everything above that you have to buy indevidually. how odd.

I haven't been impressed with anything from silverline, and I doubt I would use any of it myself.
OTOH I do owe them some word of thanks for keeping Jason Plato in a job for a while.

What about looking at impact sockets? They'll be 6 sided, and sturdy. Usually deep though.

I agree Imperial are getting harder to find in cheap sets but most ot the quality manufactures still make them. Try military suplus for good used items, traditional engineering merchants, etc. Model engineering shows as well as most car shows will have sets for sale. I've got a full set of Gedore impact 6 point wall drive (MM, AF and deep - maybe 100 items) and they are amazing quality. Only problem is price - I dread to think how much to replace them (but to be fair they have had 20 years of abuse and still perfect) gedoreuk.com/Paul H

you guys appear to be better with google than me cobblers, i did look at em, problem is they're so thickwalled compared to 'normal' sockets. limiting access. paul, ive jsut had a look at the gedore website, and the only 6 point they do is impact stuff. not particulalry cheap either as you say, they're nigh on snap on prices! panda, ive also found that set last night, and it actually seems the best option- ive found it for £21 posted. i think ile probably just get those as my metric set are sealey, the funky coloured ones, and tbh they're pretty good, ive not broken one in 5 years despite plenty of misuse.

I'm surprised no one yet has mentioned 'Britool' www.britool-expert.co.uk/Never been let down by any of their kit in the past and usually a lot easier on the pocket than Snap on

britool, like other manufacturers, don't seem to do AF in 6 point, only 12 point, which stupifies me slightly, especially as they offer metric sets in both. but to me youre more likely to need 6pt in AF as the fixings youre working on are older so more likely to be beat up, corroded or rounded! oh well, I guess they know best

I've got a couple of Silverline ratchets one broke pretty much the first time I used so I'm glad you didn't go down that route. I've also got some Sealey stuff and it's been OK so far but TBH it's not used every day. Keep us up to date on how it works out if you don't mind Dez I'm thinking of getting more Sealey gear.
