My brothers beloved mini set fire this morning, he got the fire extinguisher onto it but it kept re-igniting. It's a total write off and he's gutted! Basically he's not going to get as much as he paid for it from the insurance and he had spent alot of time and effort on it. He's going to salvage as much as he can. Does anybody know of a good solid mini for sale in the Newcastle area? Something reliable that he can bolt all his bits back onto and do it up slowly? It might not even have to be a mini, he's generally a fan of classic cars. He doesn't have alot of money to spend (definitley less than £1000) but is a total computer whizz and could maybe offer his technical knowledge and ability in addition to whatever he can pay for it? Any help would be appreciated, he's just left uni and is job hunting so needs his car for getting to interviews and stuff. I just really want to help him out.

There's a couple in the Autotrader this week. Ones a nearly finished project in the under a grand section. Think its pretty close to a grand though.

So it's really just trim parts and electrical gubbins then?? Shouldn't be so hard to put it back to how it should be

the insurance will probably write the car off, buy it back off them and spend the money getting it tip top / even better than it was.
And do the electrics properly!

If the shell is solid then I can guarantee that car will end up back on the road. The insurance will put it through a salavge auction and it will probably fetch around £3 - 500. Probably donate its shell to an older mini as well
If you can get it back of the insurers its probably worth trying to rebuild it. Even modern mini`s havent got that much in the way of electrics to rewire.

It is posible to revive your brothers Mini. Mine was in a fire about 4 years ago, unknown electrical fault. 2 Years later: I will dig out the photos of the before.

Do not let the insurance company spirit it away into a compound whatever you do, judging by the photos it cant be beyond repair, its a Mini, they aint that complicated! Get it bought back and fixed up and stop all this silly talk about it being dead!

Insurers almost always write off cars that have any kind of fire no matter how small as they are very time consuming to repair properly and the true extent of the damage can be hard to find. Not a problem if your doing it yourself though!

I would definitely say repair it!The damage doesn't look as bad as I was expecting. Whereabouts are you from in the Newcastle area? I work in newcastle. I'm sure I could lend a hand if you need one.

Thanks for the replies, I've just been on the phone to my brother to tell him there is hope! I think once he had recovered from the shock he had also been thinking the same thing. The insurance have already taken it away to assess the damage, but I told him to get it back! So if anyone has a mini dash for sale or knows of any garage space round newcastle for rent then let me know!
