Now if you put that in a 740 saloon you'd have some stealthy retro car, mabye I'd upgrade the brakes too and chop down the springs and put the wheels off an 850 T5. Otherwise it'd be fine standard. The rear wheel drive Volvo transmissions are more than over-engineered, they've been fitted to V8 hot rods running in excess of 350 horses, a lightly tuned T5 would be no problem.

I'd love to slap that under the bonnet of my dad's rat-look 760 estate (it's got moss growing on it!) but since he rarely goes more than 50 mph carting about batteries (and at the moment a display stand for Haynes manuals!) it might be a bit of a waste of time...

Might that not be a bit tricky to mount RWD? The throttle body and distibutor would be up against the bulkhead!

Those are in strange places on some Volvos anyway, and Volvos have unusually large, and very practically shaped engine bays as standard, so there would be plenty of space to move certain movable things around if they did get in the way. Another conversion gaining popularity in the US is the small block Chevy transplant into the 740, so that'll give you an idea of the engine bay you'd be working in.

I've found that the size of the enginebay isn't always a clear indication of what will fit. I fitted a Rover V8 into a big Datsun 280C I had which has a massive engine bay but it was really hard to get that V8 in there and make it clear everything. Yet I found a Nissan 300ZX engine (V6) would fit into a 1980 Sunny without any cutting at all! A lot of the time it's just down to luck wether a certain combo would work or not.
Would a FWD Volvo engine actually fit on a RWD transmission? I think if you were getting into the realms of needing adaptor plate, custom flywheel, as well as vcustom management etc, then it might be as well to go down another route such as modifying an existing RWD Volvo engine to turbo.
Then again you could always keep it transverse and mount it in the back ;D

The reason I was talking about converting the T5 there is because it's a bit of a legend among Volvo people that engine, and it has amazing potential. It's that engine that powered the BTCC winning 850 T5 estate in 1994, and in that car had 300bhp I think, so you can see the potential.
And I know what you are saying but a Volvo engine bay isn't just long and wide, it is a large an uncluttered space, and the bulkhead's well out of the way, as are the chassis 'legs' etc, and as I said, the Chevy V8 conversion is said to be relatively straightforward as far as putting 8 cylinder engines into 4 or 6 cylinder cars goes.

I want a T6 in a 164 ;D I would follow that up with the new V8 that the XC90 is getting and stick it in a 264. Fun.................

The V8 engine intrests me, it's a Jag engine really, isn't it? Still, with Volvo attention it could probably be a dependable engine. With any luck it'll inspire Volvo to go back to rear wheel drives and use the V8, but I've been hoping for Volvo to go back to rear wheel drive for a while now.

No, it's an all alloy super compact 60 degree V8 shich is unusual, and it has been designed to fit in Volvo FWD engine bays so it is very very compact. Heaps of grunt too. At the moment it will only be in the AWD XC90 and it won't be sold in Australia but it should be coming here in a year or so.

The T5 engine is good but the B200FT, B230FT and B23FT engines Volvo did seem to have a lot of tuning potential.

As soon as I saw the tuning potential of these engines I just had to have one. I will reserve my opinion until I have had a play tho.
