Last week ended on somewhat of a low point, as the lovely Evo 1 I had spent all the money I didnt have buying, decided it didnt much care for 1st gear anymore and so promptly did away with it. Not good for the 'sensible reliable family car'. It was at this point I was pleased to remember the benfits of having more than one car, although the only other one near roadworthy is my '75 Midget. This has been duly pressed into service as my daily commuter which is not ideal for many reasons, for a start getting in and out is ruining my back but also it sounds like a lancaster bomber... Thing is though this has reminded me why I bought the MG in the first place. Spring(ish) evening, roof down and 'on days like these' from the Italian Job on the stereo and my downchange coincidentally matched perfectly with the Muira's from the film. This for me was a moment of pure driving pleasure that you can only get from an old car that youve invested your time and love in making as it is. I'm gutted as the Evo is my first 'proper' fast car, and it is fast. Like a stabbed rat. But it drove a bit too sedately for my taste. I like to have to work at driving quickly and the Evo makes it all a bit easy. To my mind driving a retro on a good road, however slow is better than driving a modern, which for safety reasons completely seperates you from the driving experience. (however quickly!) Please forgive me my rant but all this has cheered me right up and helped me forget how empty my bank account is! But it does leave me with a broken Evo and a Midget that could stand being a bit nippier... hmm... Some piccys for youre troubles

Now I'm having difficulty thinking about anything else... Ive spent all afternoon thinking about what gearbox to use (came up blank...) and what to do about rear diff (some concoction of midget and evo lsd?)

Completly agree about the driving being fun! I made a bit of a mistake today - I was supposed to be going to a meeting with school and assumed the meeting was AT school, so I drove to Thirsk (about 60 miles) where they said "what are you doing here? The meeting is at county hall (in Durham....) so 50 miles back the other way!
Normally this might spoil your day a bit, but I was in the mk2 cortina and the sun was out so I had a really nice time ;D

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Now I'm having difficulty thinking about anything else... Ive spent all afternoon thinking about what gearbox to use (came up blank...) and what to do about rear diff (some concoction of midget and evo lsd?) I got given an n/a 4G63 for nothing and was thinking about how to get it into my Escort. I did a bit of looking and I think it was the Mitsubishi Scorpion gearbox that fitted. And someone said that one of the Express van 'box worked too. This was all a number of years ago, so I may well have got it wrong. Scorpion (or that's what it was called over here). Good luck with the Evo 1 though. I saw a completely stock GSR in town the other day, not many of those left. The Evo 1 and 2's are my favorite of the Evo breed too. Although I did see this awesome Evo 3 the other month.

Have to agree with the comments, I've had a long week and next week is looking worse. Tomorrow I'm driving a mates diesel disco down south for him (which i am not looking forward to). I got home and needed to shuffle cars around as the Galant is off to the garage tomorrow morning for MOT work. A lack of petrol meant I needed to drive to the garage to get some, there's a garage at the end of my street .... However after a 20 mile blast in the XT I returned grinning, fueled up the Mitsi then took that for a little run ... I feel a lot better now

Blimey, never seen one of those before! I cant imagine they'd be too easy to find. Nice Evo too, makes me think how much of a shame it'd be to split it up. Nice to see so many people enjoying their retros! Drive home tonight was great with the fabluous weather and tomorrow I'm doing the majority of the cat and fiddle ring on the way to work! Cant wait

Starion's are RWD with the same bottom end and EVOs aren't they? So that gearbox might work? Also I agree with your point whole heartedly about driving a retro car on the right road on the right day is just an awesome feeling and much nicer than any modern stuff no matter how much faster it is.

Flog the boring broken modern, use the money to shove a k series in the midget and get some better seats!

Drove the Tina for 3 hours yesterday, it's now going to be my only car and it feels very; very good to say this. I drove faultlessly, little things get fixed one after another, it's slow but fun, and people like it. I want more of that.

I would, but the lack of tyres that hold air, any form of braking system, the panels that aren't bolted on yet, an exhaust that is defying gravity, no fuel tank nowhere to put the battery anymore and probably another half dozen things I've forgotten don't help. I guess sitting in it making car noises whilst sawing at the wheel (Oh yeah, steering isn't connected either) doesn't count? I'll do it anyway.

I forgot about sapporro gearboxes fitting the EVO engine, cunning plan formed.
