Never had a problem with undoing the cv joint bolts, even if it means getting on them with a worn out pair of mole grips It's back to being smoother as well now, and theres no odd rotational noise again. That must be the warning sign of the joints gradually giving up! May bite the bullet and get some genuine gkn CVs at some point tho. And the VW emission testing is all done now

Well, all ok on the driveshaft side of things still However, parking up at home after work tonight I got a strong whiff of petrol as i backed up on to the drive. Had a nosey underneath and the pump to filter fuel hose has sprung a leak and is spraying fuel all around the boot floor area So that's a job for early morning and lunchbreak at work tomorrow

Thought the fuel pipe was half decent on the rear sections, turns out it was Gates fuel hose. And has only lasted a few years before crazing and breaking up! Got some aeroquip rubber fuel hose in my tool box at work that has replaced the Gates curse word and all has been well for the week so far

Shall try and get some boring pics tomorrow at work of the shonky fuel hose, and some of the pair of wings my other half managed to win on ebay that I collected on Wednesday evening Took my friend Dave along with me to pick them up, and on the 4 hours of travel time he must've spend 3 hours with his lap top plugged in tweaking the closed loop running on the Emerald ecu Runs miles better now, and next fill up with fuel should see a marked improvement on the current 21mpg it averages

Right, boring photo alert! This lovely Gates fuel injection hose had been on my car for maybe 2years, 3 at most. Pretty bloody awful quality really. Looks fairly ok And then when curled around And from fuel filter to the main pipework was changed as well to be on the safe side

As Saturday just gone was my Saturday off work I took the opportunity to use my ramp at work to finally swap out the leaky recon steering rack I had fitted months ago. All went well to start with, dropping down the front of the subframe and using a stand to lift the engine up to make clearance to just pull the rack out the side of the subframe. Until I removed the steering shaft to get in to the rack and found that the upper UJ had all but seized solid on one plane That would explain the heavy steering then, so what to do now. As these are no longer available from anywhere new and I needed the car off the ramp by 12pm So, in the vice with the UJ at the top and attack the bally thing with the plumbers blow torch I had recently acquired A couple of heating up cycles and copious amounts of engine oil squirted into the joint and working it around with the mole grips on the end got it freed up a tad. Then one last blast with the torch and I left it to soak in a tub of 5w30 fully synth oil whilst I replaced the rack itself. When I went back to the tub to retrieve the steering shaft and it was nice a fluid in motion on both planes of the UJ. All fitted back up and the steering bled out with no headaches at all, and the steering feels a million times better now Also had my second package turn up from HEL on Saturday morning, having only spoken to them at lunchtime on Friday. So a big thank you to them

Nice one on the steering knuckle!
I'm just about to start the same proces of removing my rebuilt steering rack as it still leaks like a siv. Last time I did this with the rack in the car it was fiddly but doable with as you said the engine raised a bit. But I didn't think of dropping the front of the subframe. That might just make it a little easier. I'll keep that in mind for sure.

Finally managed to get a chance to have a sort out in the shed last weekend and get some bits out for the old jam jar to refit and see what difference they make. As I was in there I thought I really should check out the fitment of a couple of 5x114.3 steel wheels I had bought off of rockatanski on here ages ago now They actually fit the Granada hubs However, I think the offset is tad too low So they shall be sold on at some point. Also managed to get the rear flexi hose brackets remade in stainless yesterday lunchtime To go with the new brake lines, as I think the aluminium brackets on there at the mo may not like the HEL brake lines that I need to swap out the Goodridge and standard rubber ones for

Only say that as most Weller styles are in 14inch diameter if I'm lucky, and they definately wont fit over my brakes

And also decided to get something for a bit of heat management in the engine bay. Hopefully stop the steering shaft UJ drying up and going stiff again Also retrieved the heat exchanger and oil filter arm from in the shed and have tidied that up a bit. Just need to get a couple of new seals for the Modine cooler and I shall refit that when the exhaust system is off to wrap the manifolds up I would upload a few pics, but photobucket is being a bit odd

Right, some pics to bore everyone again Got the roll of exhaust wrap and some stainless ties whilst the exhaust is off, I can then fit this back on And also finished the insides of my spare inlet manifold I know some people will say not to wrap the manifolds, but they were previously wrapped up ages ago, and they are decent thickness stainless tube as well. main reason for the wrap is so that it hopefully doesn't cook the steering column UJ and dry it out, and also keep the other items a bit cooler in the bay. Especially the alternator thats a bit close to cylinder 1 exhaust port

I like this. So few of them about now. Loads of escorts, fiesta, and capri's etc so great to see a well used Granny Thank you very much One of the reasons I cancelled my subscription to Classic Ford was because I got fed up with the same mods on the same model of car Although after the pain in the the car was this morning I sometimes wonder why I keep at the ole girl. Cut out twice on my short jaunt to work, tripping out the resettable fuse I have for the main power lead from the battery in the boot. Turns out the PAS pump I fitted when I did the BOA install has lunched itself

Thanks to my freindly car park spares supplier i have a new second hand pump and wiring loom from a 106 for the steering. One slightly extended lunchbreak and it was swapped out and bled in 90minutes Also managed to replace all the brake hoses with the HEL replacements without too much drama as well last Saturday
