I remember the negative press very well, it was mostly due to the mention facts as well as a highlight of Division 2 Comedians having to vent cheap gags on something other than ethnics or mother-in-laws.
I vividly recall the 1987 Autocar cover, stating that the Skoda Rapid was comparable to the Porsche 911. That was the start of the resurrection of the brand, VW buying the Skoda name helped too.
I'm pretty sure Seat initially got a fairly bad press too.

Love my old Skuds ! I have never had the problems the so called people "in the know" said they had,it's all press and badge snobbery plums ! Snotty has been back to her birth place twice, her younger sister,my Rapid has been back FIVE times !!!!,in between those trips i also went over in a white Rapid so what does that say about un-reliable old fashioned cars baring in mind Mlada Boleslav is a 1000 miles from my house one way !!! I have just finnished working for a Skoda dealer and the wonderful build quality that VW has inputed is utter Bull ! Too many silly gizmo's have made the cars un-reliable and un-fixable at home, give me old tech anyday......IT WORKS !!!!!! Off to Porsche now to see how "Wonderful and reliable" they are !!!!!!

skodas, ah that name, the one that began in 1896 as laurin-klement (sp?) in some wee village nr. Mlada Boleslav making bicycles and catching on to cars in '96 making it the 4th oldest car manufacturer in existence... so, they made incredible cars before ww2, all stylish and innovative, in fact i defy you to look at late 30's skodas and NOT see a VW Beetle resemblance... after ww2 they took a while to get back up, and then got onto the MB design which pretty much equalled at the least anything the infidel West could offer. Diluted in the S series as the engine was a 60's design, and then onto the estelle and eventually rapid. same engine lasted the favorit, the felicia, the polo, the golf, the arosa, the lupo, the ibiza... i think it was 2002/3 before the last ones were ditched as MPi became the norm. so the estelle was the one that brought the rep down on them. the luxury (to a ford/vx owner) heated rear screen became a joke, but the fact remains they were comparitively specced. the USSR wouldnt let them use western parts so they had to tool everything from the old workings, thats why the front drive estelle and diesel favorit concepts never reached production... so, the majority of inexpensively priced new Skodas were bought by elderly or passive people. neither were able to maintain an aircooled alloy block as was required, hence the constant headgasket failure which doomed so many in the 90s. run it on 50<% coolant mix and its generally fine.
and jasper carrott. its all the gingerhaired freaks fault.

At Curborough on Saturday we had a fantastic mix of old and new skoda's razzing round the track up-setting the bigger boys with our better handling little babies ! One bloke turned up in a Scoobysnack only to look a total tit by first of all going off in the weeds, then losing it again as he left a 4x4 friendly bend ;D Power it seems is not everything ! One non Skoda that stood out was a very nice 1500 Lada ESTATE which also showed a good time and handling on the track....fantastic day !!!!!
