Always mocked and joked about and still are to a certain extent, and pre Lada, Vauxhall were the joke were't they? that was cos they rusted though i think. Skodas certainly seem to be going up the Retro-Rides 'Cool Wall' maybe thats because of the cool active campaigners we have on here! ;D Even I'm fancying one after seeing Spockys, plus Skodastops clean masterpiece. They seem ok, pendulous back end small engines 'old fashioned' styling but whats the prob, did they brake down as much as they say, were they so curse word??? I know a guy who tuned his few in the early 90's eventually blew engines up and got into Lan' Rovers instead... So whats the deal? Just too old and cheap, everyone took the wee? or they were shonky and need obsessive lovers to look after em? Lets see some Piccies too. wheres that hightly modified rapid that came up a few weeks ago?

i cant remember quite where, but MrDaveRapid did a post about a month ago about Skoda's and why they were hated. It was an absolutely fantastic post, and covered [and explained] everything in great detail.
They need looking after, but they have loads of character and are great fun. i think they got shunned by the press because of their cheap purchase price, dubious interior materials and old fashion-ness. A Rapid from 1990 was very archic compared to a MK3 Fiesta.
I'm just heading out, but will post up some pics when I get back ;D

I remember being about 11 or 12yrs old and I was staying at my Uncle and Aunts in Chelmsford.
My cousin who must of been about 14yrs old at the time simply refused to be driven to school in the Skoda Estelle they had. He said he would rather walk the 4 miles to school. So he did.
I think back in the early 90's, the whole label whore thing was kicking off and no self respecting cool white boy would be seen dead in a Skoda or a Lada. I don't think it's as bad now but 'brand snobbery' still exists.

At that time people would rather be cosseted by the luxurious interior and reliability of a MKIV Escort 1.6GL - oh the irony!!
I do think it probably had something to do do with the fact that you could buy a brand new Lada Riva or Skoda Estelle, both of which were still relying heavily on 1960s design and engineering.

I think the Russians went to back to drinking more Vodka to get the idea out of their heads that they should build cars.
The Lada Niva did rock however! I twatted my mates Capri in his Niva and the Niva came better off ;D

We did discuss that FSO polo-nedz were curse word though! Fiat/Lada based pick up truck though... And yeah before they all go, I need a Niva!

I think its because they were very old fashioned for the time, even though they were cheap. Ladas had early 70`s fiat running gear. Top spec skodas had a trim level comparable to early 70`s fords. I remember when my uncle bought his E-reg 130 LSE rapid with a black vinyl roof and a sunroof with built in aerial . Velour type seats and alloy wheels were what set it apart from the povo spec ones and his cost extras included white paint Even though it was such a high spec it still came with a manual choke though ;D Reliability wise it never let him down and there were no bodywork problems either. Just a bad rap basically

Well, from personal experience my Rapid broke down a few times - but probably no more than any other 10 year old car would have done. I think there was a lot of snobbery about when they were new - they were quite "old tech" compared with their competitors, but I don't think that alone should have earned them the reputation that they got - the Ford Ka has an Anglia engine FFS! ;D The quality wasn't quite up to Western standards I don't think, but then they were cheap. A lot of Skodas bad rep was unfair I think.

what even happened to Lada? Still going strong in Eastern Europe. They pulled out of Britain sometime in the mid-90's, I think due to costs and possibly because they couldn't meet new emissions / crash safety legislation. I suppose that means that they pulled out of the EU all together... ...someone correct me if I'm wrong though!

its an image thing, they got a bad rep way back because they were seen as cheap=curse word and have found it hard to shake off in our increasingly label orientated society.heres a good example.for my next daily i was looking at octavia vrs's ,the missus doesnt want one because its a skoda, and would rather i buy a basically identical vw bora and spend 2k more for the same or lesser spec car.vauxhalls had the same problem and are getting over having a range of bland ,anonymous cars for years, lada look like they just gave up on the uk and hauled ass back home.skodas main problem as i see it was that they were designed for austere eastern european market when funtion was valued over form, sod the comfy velour interior,if it didnt get you sheep to market and carry eleven drunk cossacks home from the pub it was no use .even imps had problems and even now people come up to me and say 'i had one of these and it was sh!t cos it overheated! ' try telling them it was probably their own fault it went wrong but it falls on deaf ears.

I don't think they were even unreliable were they? Most cars of that age refused to start on a cold morning point blank, I don't think Ladas or Skodas were any different. In fact maybe they had the last laugh after all?

V interesting, and sorry for the half repost. Quite fancy a skud or Lada now, well not now! Interesting what Dave said in the other thread that, BMW were runabout makers (which i knew), and Skodas were posh cars! We do live in a label conscious society don't we, I just read on Citroen forum, some guys slating BMWs saying they are not as good as everyone thinks, and they do cut build corners, you just don't see em. Hmmm, so does anyone here own a Lada now Jammzrs P reg is gone, cant be many left.
