I think people cared less then about how it was modified, they just modified whatever, however and got on with it. Maybe people worry too much these days about conforming to a set of rules or particular style, Maybe thats what slowly killed SM off, specailly with a majority of kids (would be new mag browsers and scene players) mainly intersted in kitted moderns. Then those keeping tradional with custom car and yank mags, then all the marque specific ones.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I think to a degree the insurance industry killed off alot of the 'new blood' that should have filtered into the SM / retro 'scene'.... For an 18 year old the choice between paying £200+ a month for your insurance and then forking out for the cost of the car, running costs & modifications OR a brand new, fast-ish-from-the-box Saxo or similar at £200 a month on tick with free insurance for a year or two.... you can easily see why. Anyway, I digress. I'm really really keen on seeing some repro's of this Project Bottle Rocket build up. Especially if I'm going to be having a certain mushroom Rabid lurking in my shed shortly

Not sure anyone's actually poseted some pics of the two offending cars yet so I picked up a couple of issues out of the SM stash at my mums this morning. Scanny doodly doo. The Chevette in probably its best guise Then came the paint... Looking cool in the shades Mr Hill ;D

Thats what i loved about street machine, the monthly car builds. Thats why i kept all the mags although there gone now. How to build a 100e, minor, cortina etc. Around 3 issues a car, what suspension/engines fit easy etc. Was a good idea

DMC definitely better in plain red......
First SM project car I remember is the maroon '32 Model B, late '82. Then there was a Cal-look Beetle, bright red. Didn't CC do one too?
The CC project Capri (early 90's?) was funny - went to the trouble of giving it a swoopy new front end (XX didn't they call it, X-pack arches plus the front) then stuck some horrid spotlights onto it as Ring were a sponsor.
